WHY AM I DONG IT THIS WAY?
A lot of channels do Patreon or RU-vid Memberships at a cost to the viewer which puts a lot of content behind a paywall, meaning it is pay to view, and a large amount of the subscriber base miss out on a lot of content, or the quality of the content available to non members reduces. My way - EVERY one will get to see ALL content. If you aren’t in a position to donate - you still get to see ALL content and your current experience of the channel will NOT change at all. If you do want to support the channel then you get to decide how I prioritise the videos.

The important thing about this song/video is that it can be viewed through whatever Lense an individual brings to the experience. If you are a medical professional? Then you will resonate with That part of the performance. If you are a Religious person, then you will resonate with That part of the performance. If you have gone through these struggles before, you will identify with Ren personally (most honest people will say that they've battled with internal struggles before). Artists resonate with this song because of the battle within themselves of "You're not GOOD enough". See how his song can touch so many different people, all at the same time?? He really IS truly a gifted and special Artist.

My interpretation of the section of his monologue at the end when he spoke of winners and losers in psychological warfare paired with victims and students is that winning and losing are finite terms, indicating the end of the war. Instead, he realized that it wasn't a finite thing you could win or lose, instead, you could either be a victim and allow the war to constantly consume you, or you could be a student and study and learn ways to cope and to heal.

I think Ren's spoken message at the end is so profound. If we are sick, we want to take the therapy and be cured. But for those with chronic mental illness, they will not be cured and have to constantly readjust.

You also have to remember that Psychology and therapy is an extremely in-exact field and the tendency for "1 size fits all" solutions to fit economic requirements means a significant number of people who need help are not getting what they need even if they do get to see a so called "expert". I am not sure any mental health condition is truly chronic, but it's really a redundant argument for those suffering and unable to get the help they need. On top of that most who are mentally ill are unwilling and unable to face the trauma that is the root cause, without the base cause being tackled then any treatment is highly unlikely to stand the test of time.

Well i suffered 'severe' braindamage when i was six weeks old. It took out my left hearing, it took out muscles in my right leg, since the nerves to my brain where cut of due to the disease. Mentally though i suffer from what you could describe as an alternate mood. Quite unique it is as well. I was tested and when it's about depression on a scale from not being depressed =0 to being it >80 . Well you need a little on this scale to worry about things you need to do like everyday stuff paying bills earn income and such. Usually an average person sits at 20 on that scale. I am at 2-10 it swings like a pendulum :P. There are no pills for such conditions. Hence the experts can't even predict what the usual pills will do with my brain since it's damaged. Well obvious i am still sane and can write and go through live with a bit of help. But if God would offer to take my legs away to fix my brain i would take it. It's a weird world i am living in. Your 100% right truth is when it comes to mental health science know so little about the brain.

One key point is that the lights blink on and off when the bad Ren is speaking, but at the end when he is dancing and singing as he plays the lights are blinking. My take is that Ren has embraced both his good side and his bad side in the end, which also appears to be the point of the soliloquy.

One other thing to note is that in the beginning of the song the guitar notes are, while technically excellent, are clipped almost to the point of separation. It gives the song a very mechanical feel. Once he fully integrates both sides of his personality the notes are much more fluid, flowing together to make a more organic and natural feel. I felt like this symbolized the combination of raw emotion and raw intellect to produce something truly incredible.

Exactly. From my vantage point this line is rather straightforward in terms of what it is intended to mean. Its like when Kurt Cobain spoke of his lyrics: there's no underlying meaning or message. I've seen various interpretations of these lyrics, in this comment section and other reaction vids, but it's my opinion that people tend to overanalyze simplicity and it alters the intent of the writer's objective. On the other hand, everything is open to interpretation, especially with a song of this nature. After all, despite all efforts, psychology is a soft science; hence, mental health is difficult, if not impossible to measure in many instances. My understanding is that it is seemingly about feeling better and by default, thoughts of SI lose their potency and the idea of appreciating life is preserved and more importantly a positive sense-of-self is restored. We all have a built in mechanism to stay alive. It's a psychological abnormality, an epigenetic triggering, thus, awakening a dormant gene containing self-injurious thoughts that turn to negative actions: it is contradictory to our will to live, despite harsh circumstances or environments. In short, evolution has rid the human race of those who suffer from SI and SA, because the presence of this trait has no utility in self-preservation, which is a human beings ultimate purpose; nevertheless, a mutation sneaks back in from time to time.

This was an enjoyable reaction. I wrote this introduction to Ren when I first discovered him earlier this year, as there wasn’t a Wikipedia entry for people to look him up prior to March 2023. I have posted this info to every “Hi Ren” reaction I have come across since, and I hope it will be of some use to the uninitiated. “Hi Ren” is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar since December; it went viral and has garnered over 11 million views since its debut, but he has been creating great music for more than ten years. Ren’s music videos are generally recorded live, often in a single take, although not necessarily the first take, and from various camera angles. His release, "Sick Boi," is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren." Many of Ren’s songs resonate with people because he addresses struggles that many others face every day. Ren is an independent artist/singer/songwriter/busker from Brighton, UK. He plays multiple instruments (acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, drums), has impressive vocals, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. He is considered by many a modern-day bard; he calls his music “bardcore.” Ren’s earliest recordings on RU-vid are from his time in a band called “Trick The Fox,” consisting of Ren and his buddies Charlie and Tommy. Unfortunately, the band performed only briefly due to Ren’s onset of health issues. They are very talented. A fun clip to watch is “The Mash Up.” Ren’s trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy and is a prime example of his genius; it is a master’s class in storytelling and also showcases his guitar skills. The three acts are haunting, and the conclusion will catch you off guard. The trilogy needs to be watched in the order given, as this is the flow of the storyline and is best watched as a whole rather than piecemeal. Ren’s collaborations with Chinchilla (“Chalk Outlines,” “How to Be Me,” “Sexual Healing,” “One Dance/Drunk in Love”) are beautiful and showcase his singing voice. His live music videos are especially impressive. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," “Diazepam," “Penitence,” “Dear God,” “Heretic,” “Dominos,” his "Freckled Angels" album, just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I & II) is another recommendation, although it is less of a personal song than it is an indictment of greed and the resulting injustices in this world. Ren’s Hip Hop/Rap style songs are all worth checking out if you enjoy this genre; they are pretty amazing. Check out “The Hunger,” “Genesis,” “What You Want,” “Losing it (FISHER rap retake),” “Right Here, Right Now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake),” "Life is Funny," “Love Music (Parts 1, 2, and 3),” “Crucify Your Culture,” “Power,” "Hold On," his new release “Bittersweet symphony (The Verve retake),” and his latest release "The Illest Of Our Time," just to name a few. Ren's performances with Sam Tompkins (“Blind Eyed,” “Earned It /Mans World / Falling,” “Walking on the Moon/No Diggity,” “Feeling Good/Trouble So High/Masterblaster (Jammin'),” “Latch,” “Wild Thoughts/Crazy in love (Live Session),” “Same Old Situation (Live, feat. Ren),” “Improvising Around Stevie Wonder,” “What Went Wrong” Part I&II) are definitely a must. Also, his collaborations with Eden Nash (“Humble,” “Ocean”), Bibi (“Crutch,” “Ahiahiaoha”), Molly McKinna (“Penitence”), Orlean ("Jessica"), his former bandmate Romain Axisa (“French Song”), are all great. Last but not least, Ren’s busking sessions with Liv Sangster are awesome. I recently discovered that Ren also recorded a cover of “Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Cover),” that is simply beautiful. "The Big Push" (Ren Gill, Gorran Kendall, Romain Axisa, and Glen Chambers) busking sessions, concerts, and live recordings all are amazing and well worth checking out. All but the drummer sing lead vocals at times. Ren, Gorran, and Romain all play multiple instruments. Ren plays acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, and drums. Gorran plays acoustic, electric, bass guitar, and harmonica. Romain plays acoustic, electric, bass guitar, ukulele, and piano. They are each incredibly gifted artists, and their solo work is completely different from each other. Well worth checking out. Their covers of "I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop," "Wade in the Water/Nina Simone/Trouble so Hard," "Watch Out," “War Pigs,” “Roadhouse Blues,” "My Generation," “Paint It Black,” "An Englishman in New York," “Bongo Bong” are awesome. On “These Boots Are Made For Walking,” “Praise You” (Fatboy Slim Cover), “What Kind Of Woman Is This,” all three take a turn singing. The songs "Oh My Woman," “Swan Song,” “Sweet Little Lady," "It's Alright," “Dignity,” and so many others are equally impressive. The band, at least for the time being, performed their last official busking session and gave their last concert in September of last year (2022) due to the fact that Ren was leaving for Canada to undergo specialized medical care and surgeries for his multiple health issues. In anticipation of his stay in Canada, Ren prepared some music ahead of time to be released over the next six months that he expects to be gone. He released “Sick Boi” and “Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve retake),” which is another masterful work. Ren just released his newest song, “Illest Of Our Time,” on his birthday, March 29. His newest release, "Animal Flow," will premiere on May 04.

Nic and many professionals who have been reacting to his music all express what can be learnt from his music and the message that he delivers some even suggesting that it can be used as a teaching tool even for their students.

Aren't the principles of Buddhist/Taoist philosophy destined to came out of struggle? It was the Buddha that kind of surrendered to hardship to find out the truth. Or accept every hardship as long as he would find the truth. When you're in despair some people surrender or recognize that their vision of reality can't be true. mental ilnesses are extremely difficult but with a reason. When a sort of surrender comes divinity or our true Self will reveal itSelf as a result of that surrender. The surrender often comes after recognizing a kind of psychosis. like observing oneself or dealing with thought like : "I can't live with myself any longer". I can't live with MYSELF any longer sounds kind of psychotic already although this kind of thinking is normal everywhere. But when one realises that there can't be two quistions will arise like Who Am I, the funny thing is that that which we think we are can't answer that question and the silence that is the result of that ( the silence of the mind, or peace of God) will reveal our true Self (which never left us). I'm more into the Advaita vedanta tradition although Buddhism, taoism, Sufism, Kabbala etc and all the mystical wings of religion points towards the same truth (a universal truth apart from religion) To me at age 34 this questions arose now 4 years ago. But after realizing the true nature it is not somtehing special or strange, in fact the strange part is that we believe to be the ego's that our minds tells us ( as the video clearly shows the distinction between the two) . I even dare to say that mental ilness is the current norm of society (egoism) , so someone who realize his true nature isn't special but just someone or some-One that just became sane again, as a part of God that finally awakes. Sorry my english isn't hat great

There one thing that no one picked up on, maybe because it's not something you might notice on a first listen. As he's ending the song he stops before playing the last note and puts down the guitar. I personally hear with “Some people know me as hope, some people know me as the voice that you hear when you loosen the noose on the rope” is the voice some people hear that makes them step down off the chair and rethink. Also for me with “You know how I know that I’ll prosper is cause I stand here beside you today I have stood in the flames that cremated my brain and I didn’t once flinch or shake” is with all the hardship, pain and suffering he’s had he’s still standing refusing to give in. First time i watched Hi Ren i had a panic attack but thought i needed to watch it again so i watched someone reacting to it that was the best thing i could do i have watched many times since. One thing i think about this song is it needs to be seen by every one even in schools after a certain age, because how many children kill themselves because of the negativity towards them from nasty comments and bullying to them believing what is said. I went through bullying all through school to the point i attempted suicide twice, I am a recovering alcoholic 11 years clean I suffer PTSD and other health issues so the majority of bad days over good is high, if this bullying had been dealt with i may have had a reasonable life not the existence i have to deal with now

Here is some additional information on Ren's story that I gathered from old newspaper interviews, articles, and Ren's livestreams and posts where he discussed his condition. Ren Erin Gill is a British musician/independent artist; born in Wales on March 29, 1990; he eventually moved to Brighton. Ren pursued a career in music from an early age. In 2009, while studying music performance at Bath Spa University, Ren began to experience health issues and was struggling to attend his lectures. In 2010, he was signed by Sony Records and was working on an album when his health deteriorated to the point where he was unable to continue and subsequently dropped by Sony. Ren's illness often kept him in bed for up to 23 hours daily. Ren was initially misdiagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome, which led him to experience psychosis and develop PTSD. It would take seven years before a doctor in Belgium finally correctly diagnosed Ren with autoimmunity, Lyme disease, and resulting damage to the brain, organs, joints, and PTSD. Ren eventually underwent stem cell therapy in the United States, which improved his health, but it has not been a cure. Ren is currently in Calgary, Canada for more treatments, including surgeries, and will have to be there for at least six months (Summer of 2023) undergoing IV and other interventions five days a week. Ren recently underwent wisdom tooth removal and cavitation surgery. In addition, his Canadian doctor discovered that Ren also developed a condition called Mast Cell Activation Disorder (MCAD), which has affected the myelin sheath in his brain, his thyroid, adrenals as well as his bones/joints. Now, Ren is receiving additional treatments for this previously undiagnosed condition. Let's keep supporting Ren as he undergoes his treatments. Check out and subscribe to his channel, if you are a content creator, ask your audience to subscribe to Ren. Listen to some of his earlier work, like and comment on his performances, and let's lift Ren's spirits. If you are a believer, pray for him. Ren is an artist with something to say to the world, and his work is important in these troubling times. Someone has finally created a Wikipedia page for Ren, so there is additional information available. Here is the link to Ren’s GoFundMe page to raise money for his current treatment. Ren has exceeded his initial goal. However, his goal was very conservative and did not reflect the added costs of unforeseen surgical procedures, and treatment for additional health issues such as MCAD. www.gofundme.com/f/ren-get-better-from-lyme-disease-and-autoimmunity

Unfortunately the Lyme's Disease has left permanent damage to his brain. it's an Auto Immune Disease and it was left misdiagnosed for so long it's done damage to his body's organs too, especially the gut that has a direct correlation with the brain. Ren is on a strict diet to reduce the inflammation flares. When he experiences a flare up it causes havoc with his body and brain. Stress causes flares too. He's not able to harness his creativity during these painful times and that creates a deeper depression. It's crazy that he's been able to write and produce such inspiring music throughout this living nightmare. His entire music catalogue is like a diary of a traumatised Sick Boi that's been brought to life through his amazing artistry. I love Ren ❤

Hi Mr. Ekshin, I am sorry that that is what you took away from my video as it was not my intention. I don't think I made any attempt at diagnosis - as that isn't how I work, I look at what is getting in the way of someone living a meaningful life and help them with that. I was mainly focussed on the fact that we all have a critical voice as human beings, and it is our relationship with that critical voice that can impact how we live our lives. I have given this another go with another one of Ren's songs called Sick Boi. I have listened to it many times and reflected on it, along with reflection of the part I have myself played in a broken mental health system. I hope you see another side of me in that one so I would ask you give that a chance. Thanks for the comment, I am always open to self reflection of the message I am giving.

I’ve accepted my “bad side” for almost 40 years and it only got worse. I began chemical therapy 2 years ago after my mom passed away (together with therapy I already was going thru) and it was the best thing I’ve done for myself in more than 40 years. My psychologist asked me how I felt, the first session we had after I started taking the 3 antidepressants and anxiolytic I’m on and my answer was something along the lines of “I slept! I finally slept. And I dreamt, I haven’t remember any dreams for more than 3 decades. I never knew I could feel at ease like this, if someone asked me before what this feeling was, it’d be like asking a blind person what is the color blue”. I’ve been taking this antidepressants and anxiolytics for 2 years and it’s been the best I’ve been since ever… before my cognitive function was declining rapidly, I was getting ultra forgetful, I was having difficulty functioning (more than ever, but I wouldn’t have a way to compare), and afterwards it was as if a huge weight was lifted… it took me months to regain the cognitive function to levels of a decade or so, but it didn’t bothered me anymore because I was able to sleep again. I used to write texts that people appreciated a lot and now I don’t have that dark and angst facet of mine to write it anymore, but I don’t care. I lived in the darkness for almost 4 decades, I don’t mind forgo it for now on. Before starting the drug therapy I hadn’t smile, with teeth, for at least 20 years or so, last times I remember doing so was in college… it took me a few months to starting doing so again but now I find myself smiling and laughing with open mouth and showing my teeth and it makes me even happier :) small things and feeling I haven’t felt or done in decades… hello Hugo :) Don’t get me wrong… my darkness is still there, just doesn’t control me anymore, doesn’t drag me down to unbearable levels anymore.

If you want to explore more of Ren's music that specifically deals with mental health, i would suggest the live video with Chinchilla, "Chalk outlines" and/or, also w/Chinchilla and live, " How to be Me." Also, "Blind Eyed," a collaboration with Sam Tompkins, i like the version recorded with crown studio. "Diazepam" explores the limitations of medical intervention and, lastly, "Sick Boi" rages with righteous anger toward the medical profession and is a stinging indictment of capitalism writ large. This will yield hours of content. Oh, and if you want to address trauma, domestic violence, the cycle of abuse and generational trauma as well as the epigenetics of trauma, then the three part masterpiece "The tale of Jenny and Screech (full version) is an absolute must.

He defies genres. Every song is different. You'll have many suggestions of what to watch next. The choices are many that showcase his vocal and musical ability, and they all have a deep message. May I suggest that you react to 'Crutch' ft Bibi. The reason being that it flows on from perfectly from Hi Ren. Crutch is an emotive work of art that brings you into Ren's mind set during those psychotic moments. The video features Bibi, who was Ren's girlfriend at the time. It's tragically beautiful and I think you'll blown away by his ability to elicit that physical gut reaction. Penitence ft Molly McKinna is another emotional deep dive. It strikes me how many people completely miss the fact that Ren's faith is ultimately what delivers him from psychoses. "I was made by his hand it's part of his plan that I stand on my own two feet." Also how many people dismiss that the dark side of Ren as simply a psychological aspect of his personality when it is literally the demon himself. Ren explains this explicitly but based on responses this is largely ignored. Not surprising in this day and age.

As a person who’s never been able to escape imposter syndrome and negative self-talk, *realizing* that I can exert the strength that destructive voice questions-strength that I *know* I have-was sooo important. It takes time to push past the negativity-to make your own voice stronger, but if anyone out there is struggling with this, please please please *know* that you can do it. *Know* that I believe in you… but you don’t need me to-just like you don’t need the shroud of doubt that feels first of protection and then as a prison. You are *stronger* than that voice. You are stronger than you can *possibly* know… until you push back with softness or aggression-your choice.

Why aren't all mental health professionals as enlightened as you, sir? We have a problem here. I'm 51 years old and have been screaming out for help but all anyone wants to do is coddle me which makes my anger grow. I decided 14 years ago to just brave this on my own. CPTSD is too deep for people to grasp the complexitoes of this. Prolonged childhood trauma requires a lifetime of healing, especially when SA is involved. I certainly appreciate your insight. Who knew that watching a reaction video would help me this much? Thank you. I will certainly take your perspective into consideration and check out your channel to see what you're all about.

Love Dr Nic and really enjoyed this reaction. I’d listen to Ren talk very specifically about dropping his struggle and the meaning of this song to him. Will be worth 8 minutes, or even filming a reaction for. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-M1Na3nQV_8Q.html

I like Ren and I fully get the "internal struggle of humans" and the self hate part of the song's message.. BUT! My father had serious mental issues, schizofrenia (undiagnosed but the doctors thought) and D.I.D (diagnosed), and I can't watch his video or listen to it. It triggers me so much to the point where I get what probably is some kind of PTSD hearing the evil voice. My father was so scared of that voice which was always present, always lurking in the corner. I feel this is an effective way to get people to identify internal struggles, but to me it's dipping into real disorders and that's tricky. Just sharing my feelings and thoughts, I have much love and respect for Ren. Edit: English is my second language. And yes, I'm in therapy my friends

You are absolutely correct in highlighting this song. If I may add that your ability to analyze and bring forward your perception of his content and willingness to share your advice, strategies, and feelings really engaged me and helped me have a better understanding in how to go about my healing process. Thank you. It's content like this, both Rens music and your reaction to it, that has the potential to positively influence so many people. ❤

this seems to be classic Shadow work. if you listen to the shadow here, he never ever truly attacks Ren but instead beats him with the truths, to balance Rens seemingly blind faith.. He always tells Ren that they need each other and Jung felt the Shadow had an important part in that dance.. just my laymans take on it as a fan of the teachings of Jung

I would like to say to people to not get to involved in the terminology of mental illness. Can't help to notice that this feeds the beast too. It's like a revolving door once you get "help" Maybe you didn't deserve what life had put you through. Maybe you didn't have a say.. Just be content with who you have become and what you let go. And to see it as 50/50 positive against negative sounds like a good deal to me.

About "no real winners and no real losers", I'm not sure, but there are at least 2 possible interpretations: - neither the good side nor the bad side can win 100% over the other one, they will both coexist - or.. people don't really win or lose this internal battle, but (he goes on) "there were victims, and there were students" - people who fall into despair, and people who learn how to live with the struggle and find ways to make it easier and perhaps turn it into something positive

I've made up this little Cut & Paste information for when I find someone just discovering Ren, so here I go with it (and note that I may edit this as I go to respond to commentary but that's always at the top like this is) EDIT - Something I think people are starting to realize is just how much this face forward discussion of one's own internal struggle is having a SERIOUS impact .. there's so much power to be had by taking yourself in hand and understanding that you need both sides, and neither one of them should have complete control, it's a balance that we all try to keep, its when we fall off that we lose the plot (extreme depression vs extreme narcissism .. .and speaking from personal experience with both I know just how much they can destroy you and those you love) One last bit that my brain felt the need to include ... we have bad days, we have good days, yesterday (as an example) for me, was a bad day and it was all I could do to not just curl up in a blanket and try to make the world forget my existence .. the key is to remember that pain isn't forever. Welcome to the RENaissance, a home for the lost and broken; enjoy the ride - For more Bardcore - check out the 3 part Tale of Jenny & Screech If you want to dive more into the rap side of his catalogue, I'd start with "What You Want" which is a brilliant homage to the Beasties, followed with "Genesis" followed by "Sick Boy" followed by "Illest of Our Time" (this one goes after the previous one so you have some grasp of the meaning) and the trail goes from there For more rock oriented fare follow the breadcrumbs to The Big Push and dive in (I personally suggest Sweet Little Lady, Swan Song, Englishman in New York, and the cherry on top 'I Shot The Sherriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop') Last but not least, don't be afraid to check down the alleys, Ren has built himself a circle of talented musician friends that will surprise you and make you glad you chose to look for hidden treasure (Hint: *Chinchilla, Eden Nash, Sam Tompkins, and so many more) (Also Humble w/ Eden Nash is just pure young punk/rude boy heaven) *Chinchilla: Take 1 part Christina, 1 part Jessie J, 1 part Rhianna, blend well and pour over your own unique style, served ice cold by the baddest bitch in town (See Fingers (Live), Little Girl Gone (the official video is just *fun*) *Gorran: I've fallen in love with his tune If (live version) *Romain: I haven't found one that just ... stabs me in the face and says "LISTEN TO ME ON REPEAT" but all of them are ridiculously good

I had a choice of DBT & ACT & I went with DBT. Thank you for explaining some of the principles. I struggled massively with losing the wilfulness but it’s taught in DBT too, you just don’t have to confront the need to accept things right up front in the name of the therapy 😂 I got there in the end, just needed to learn to cope ahead & have distress management tools in safe before I felt safe enough to practice acceptance & willingness.

Ren got really sick as a teenager. They treated him for things like bipolar disorder. The medication caused psychosis, I think. After many misdiagnosis, it was discovered that he has Lyme disease. He recently just left Canada, after spending quite some time here receiving treatment. This synopsis is very brief. There's a lot more to his story, but those are the main parts I remember.

I have to admit i didn't like your interpretation at first. My feelings jumped back and forth listening to you talk. Accepting and meeting your struggles, that first step, isn't always the first. Soemtimes it's the first, second, repeated step. I thought I understood this song on my own before seeing your perspective. I cried the first couple of times I watched it. Why cannot we care without hurting. As an emphatic person, this has hurt me more than it's helped. Maybe I'm not caring in the right places. This video was stressful for me.
