As a 16 year old in the early 1980s, I worked at a gas station pumping gas, cleaning windshields, etc. We used to have an older man come into the gas station in his black 1950s station wagon which half the time had fishing poles sticking out of the back window. Nice, unassuming man in jeans, white tee shirt and suspenders. Always pleasant to talk to. The owner of the gas station tells me that’s Lamont DuPont, former President of DuPont Corporation. He was retired and worth many millions but loved to spend his retirement fishing local rivers and keeping a low profile.
My old man never had a new car, wore the cheapest jeans from budget stores and never took a vacation, but he was worth 7 figures and owned multiple apartment buildings & businesses. When he passed away, 500 people showed up to his funeral. They were all folks he had helped out at one time or another. He was a roofer with a 5th grade educations. That's it. But to those people, he was worth them coming out for because he affected their lives enough. If I get to be 1/10th of what my old man was, I'd still be 10X the man most men are today.
Thanks! @@abdosimon My old man never new his own father and was especially hard on me growing up. I didn't understand it, but when I became an adult, I saw that he wanted me to grow up right. That's why I say all my mistakes are my own and whatever is good in me is all him.
That guy is really rich, very possibly he never had time to think about how much money he had or had the time to count them, or expensive things to buy. He is too busy with thing he likes, fishing. 👌
I used to be around a molecular biology department at a big university. Many of the professors came from "old-money", because they could afford to live on the ridiculously low post doc salaries, and take the financial risk of working in a field where, very often, years of research resulted in no "positive" results.
In all fairness, getting into ANY molecular biology department with or without "old money" is nothing to sneer at. That's hard science, and I admire such people.
work instead on knowing the right people. It's not about how much you work nor making your own business. It all has to do with who you know and the opportunities you get
Rich people do this not because they are humble but because they desire power. They can’t have power if people hate them. There’s an agenda by the media (sponsored by rich people) to make rich people relatable or seem like nice wonderful people because everyone is now exposed on the internet. This is nothing but PR so they don’t get canceled by the internet mob. 😂
Showing scenes from The Godfather as an example of Old Money is just strange, true they are well dressed, but the Corleones are a crime family who would never cross paths with Old Money on a tennis court or at Ascot.
Correct. The Corleones masqueraded as old money as a way of deflecting the brutal reality of their ways. They had the trappings but not the principles. Another example of this would be the Trump family.
The thing is, some people who are from old money are into flashy And they also don’t mind spending. But typically these type of people are the ones that drain the family coffers dry.
From a Chinese Proverb: the first generation builds the wealth; the second generation is inspired to preserve it by witnessing the hard work of their parents; and the third generation, having never witnessed the work that went into the creation of this wealth squanders it.
@@katherinelangford981 Well, we say that in Italy too, but also as there are too big corporations to fail, same way there are riches you simply cann't squander! Plus they have their own exclusive investors that do their bidding...
Legacy and long term thinking, Importance of etiquette and good manners, Discreet success, Emphasis on giving back/ philanthropy. Valuing education and intellectual pursuits.
the reason is simply because the old money are born with money so the concept of luxury is just a part of their life since born, in other words.. they are accustomed by it.. also living with lot of money can gave you access to certain circle of people, certain education group, and certain society which leads you to grow cautions since the competition are more harder among others. in the other hand, the "new money" tends to show what they have as an appreciation for themself to their success. they also usually have the feel of living on the top among their groups because of their succession..
💯true. I was raised poor. My mother was a popular teacher. She never really knew her father (her mother moved them away from him) but she prized education and traditional clothing over trend clothing. She always made sure we were presentable and was herself well read . She socialized with all people. After she passed I was curious about my grandfather and did genealogy. My grandfather was in the Army but he came from a very old family. The family was wealthy for the better half of a thousand years! My families last name has been around since 1019! Through my mother I am related to 27 of the of 46 presidents. Directly to four and two are living presidents. Additionally, I am related to four of the seven founding fathers.Having a family that I can trace through out a millennium has given me a different perspective than most people. Knowing exactly who your ancestors were, where they were, and what they did is really another level. It blew my mind a bit. I’m not like most people who don’t know what their ancestors did. My ancestors appear to have been at every major event in the last thousand years. I researched them and found them even before they had a last name😂 I am preservation librarian and not rich but wealth goes up and down. My mother really makes me believe for some class is internal.
Yes, the description of old money families is true. I can confirm as I also come from this kind of family, but we lost our fortune because of the crisis in 1929 and 2WW. As the result of that last 3 generation have to struggle with new life conditions that make the expected level of existence challenging...but still possible to maintain within some boundaries.
- having a large sum of money means that you can invest it and have a passive income, freeing you from having to spend your time working in order to survive it also allows you the freedom to help alleviate the struggles of others, and gives you a chance to act to make life better for all of us, amd spend your time on activities you consider to be positive and useful - in other words, done right it gives you more opportunity to be a decent, ordinary, helpful human being - it is big responsibility, and means you have to make continual efforts to be sure you on the right path, and are not influenced by the abundance of funds you are the steward for :)
Using scenes from the Godfather to illustrate these points misses the mark a bit. Michael Corleone was not old money, just second generation wealth. His brothers certainly exhibited none of the traits of old money, and neither did Michael (apart from being able to keep his cool).
@@scottw5315 Exactly! Talking about sofisticated old money, classy people, about their good maners while using scenes from the Godfather with gangsters and criminals is unbelievable.
You forget some very important pieces: - They usually are very religious and belong to religious organisations such as the Order of Malta. - They focus on quality in clothing (cashmere, top quality wools, silk, good quality cotton, etc.) - They focus on quality in food too, they know perfectly well what top cooking should be about: specific flavor profiles, techniques, etc. - They are very discrete, they won't easily share things with you unless you have earned their trust, and as a friend your discretion is also very much required and appreciated - Etiquette is of course a no brainer - You better know how to hold a conversation about culture, politics, architecture, the world, etc. when dealing with old money - in Europe they play field hockey, tennis, do ballet, ride horses, play an instrument or two, etc.
@@sandraankenbrand the ones I know are. I'm an atheist so not inclined to go to Latin mass :p We can be friends, but they would never consider me marriage material because of that.
@@JustBeingAwesome I currently live in the UK, have been previously living in Paris and didn't really see that... And two of my friends are from very old billionaire families. In my hometown lives also one of the oldest European Families who succeeded the Medici and yet they still officially are connected with the church but not all of them ever go into one or are known as straight believers... they even marry outside their own religion
My family does prioritise dressing well. They sure have money and mostly spend on important affairs, occasions, events and have prioritised education and manners
True story... I was driving by a millionaire row in Connecticut and just about every driveway had two types of cars. One was an unassuming economy 4 cylinder car (Hyundai, Kia, Honda, Toyota, etc...) and the other was an exotic or luxury car (Ferrari, Porsche, Bentley, Jaguar, Rolls Royce, etc...). You just knew that the cheap car was what they drove daily and that the other one was their once in a blue moon spoil themselves ride. And they were all parked in the driveways of multimillion dollar homes as opposed to the ghettos in New York City or the trailer parks of The South that have $100,000 pickup trucks or BMW's in their parking with wheels that cost 2 semesters of their kids' college tuition.
@@AroundTheWorldWithEase I know more than a few legit millionaires. They all have incognito cars that they use for errands and their premium cars they use on occasion.
It was so weird seeing, a brand new Maybach, when it really meant something and you had to be invited to purchase one along side a brand new Bentley Convertible which is a standard vehicle one would see in an upper class garage, both in garage of a a home that screamed upper middle class. Strange.
In my social gatherings there is a lot of etiquette and respect for each other we know the value of money and we teach each other that when we see a person in true need to help them buy them clothes and sit them in the very same restaurant we had our meal and pay everything for this person but it’s all done quite smooth no attention
My grandfather's housekeeper always had a place at the dinner table. When they began to travel extensively, she got to live in the 2 bedroom MIL apartment as her own.
I really like this video. I have a friend who is old money, and this gave me some insight to their philosophies. Everything you presented really reflects in this O.M. Family I know. I enjoyed the insights this gave me and would love to see more like this. To me it's not about Old or New being better. I like knowing how different people of all backgrounds think. Glad I found your channel!
The business of the Corleone family used for the illustration is characteristic of new money) But, I agree, Don Michael looks really aristocratic. And, by the way, "Omerta" is very similar to the Dueling Code....
Maybe because many of the fortunes of the "old money" came from the same ruthless behavior, just white-washed because it was many more generations back.
Not a coincidence that Michael is the one with the old money flair in the family. Remember, he is the youngest son and the first child who was born when his father was already wealthy and powerful. He grew up rich and is the only one with college education. Freddy and Sonny were born when Vito was still a poor plodder in lower Manhattan.
Not bad review man but I would like to see Middle Eastern, Asian, and African wealth behavior. It seems that you have an approach that is kind it limited especially regarding wealth. I'm grateful also I learned some new stuff there thanks
What makes you think that old money people understand the importance of etiquette and manners any more than the rest of the world? I’m 65 y.o. and one of the most polite people I’ve ever known was from the “lower middle” class
I always wanted to go to South Africa. It was the last place on my initial bucket list. We did it on our own. No tour companies and got to really see and know the people as we were never hurried on the tour I set up. What i found was that every person, no matter how poor, and most are black, was friendly and had a smile on their face and talked freely. Every one. Compare and contrast this to the rich people from the North Shore in Chicago, where I used to live, which is the upper crust. They are mannered but for the most part self absorbed and there is an underlying negative attitude to them which does come out.. What more can i say.
Old money is just a generalization and simplification. Even among the richest not each individual behaves the same, has the same taste or the same moral level.
I'm so ecstatic that a spotlight is being shone on the psychology of old money. Pop culture has become so unbalanced and distasteful. Don't know how long OM will trend but at least people are waking up to it as an optional lifestyle.
I from middle class like a lot of people, and I remark that a lot of people like to travel, travel and travel... It's the only thing for this people who are important. And one day, I have a friend who comes from a old money family and he explained to me that he didn't travel much, that for his parents it was useless and a waste of time, and that they just traveled for culture (visiting Rome or Florence or a historical city for example). They prefer sport and take time for culture or juste simple thing (my friend was a big fan of videogame and think he is more happy during is vacation to play that after the end of schoolyear! )...I was happy, because I think the same, and I like to past my time in my country during the spring every and just travel when I want really ! Unfortunately, many people in my class (and I've discussed this with friends) don't travel to enjoy themselves, but to show that they're rich (or think they are). Apparently a lot of old money don't care to travel, they just like to take her time and appreciate simple thing. It's a rare quality today. Anyway, I thing a lot of tips in this video can be useful for every people. Like legacy, I think it's important. Or education, and not just for a good job.
I totally agree about the traveling part. I know so many who are show off travellers. I hope to travel one day to actually experience the culture of places.
You forgot - Number 6: old money people and individuals are deathly afraid that the working class will raise up and take it all off them and then kill them all. 😂
No they're not. They're too wealthy. It's generational. They have invested wisely so that if certain businesses go under they still have income coming in. The "rich" are afraid of losing their money because they spend it recklessly on things they can't afford 10 years from now. They don't learn finances or watch the market.
Something I observed is that new money tend to have flashy behavior because they want to display as status symbol of their riches, but sooner or later, they will realize that they are only putting themselves in potential danger and at risk of being targeted by money-hungry parasites. The old money know this which is why they would prefer to keep a low profile to avoid unecessary and unwanted attention. For the wealthy, privacy is power and protection.
Die Bilder passen weitgehend nicht zum Text und haben meist nichts damit zu tun. Es sind oft ältere Schauspieler die mehrheitlich aus der Unterschicht stammen, um es einmal schmeichelhaft auszudrücken.
What you're saying sounds good but why use the Colione crime family though? I'm not saying other families are 'without sin' but this seems to glorify the mob. They may give discreetly but their reputation is they're also discreet about shaking down and killing people.
Kate Middleton us VERY “NEW MONEY.” Simple to look up. Parents were air stewards, not very educated, but very aspirational for their children. Money (the Middleton parents) comes from a party favors business that did well, started by them not their ancestors.
Exactly there's no difference between old or new it's wether the person wants to be flashy or not. I bet its 50 50 old are flashy and 50 50 new are flashy
@@adida.sativa-dv2el It depends on what you mean by flashy. Louis XIV was definitely flashy. Maybe it's that nowadays both old and new money don't have any taste.
Rich screams ( shows labels like a gucci 2 piece tracksuit with the g's printed all over it). Wealth whispers. Bottega, celine, The Row etc. Labels are into craftsmanship and classic designs. Even chanel has cheapened the quality of their brand over time and some pieces are worth investing in while others are not.
Why do they care about legacy so much though? I mean why care that your future great great great great grandkids are set for life? Ur never gonna meet them... not saying waste all ur wealth but caring about your last name reputation after ur dead- whats the point in caring ur already dead!
Duh...When i waited table, my most pleasant customers were OLD MONEY. Not the biggest tippers, but excellent, and willing to pay for any EXTRA SERVICES.They won't run your ass off...but they WILL tip, accordingly, if they do...and they WILL be polite about it. They never made you feel like white trash...or brown trash..either The nouveau riche has ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHAT HAPPENS, BEHIND THE SCENES, before OR after one flashes your gold card...or cash. Which is odd, considering how many were IN THE SERVICE INDUSTRY. So they think LOUD, DEMANDING, PUSHY. ISN'T THAT what being rich IS ??? Sadly, nothing could be further from the truth. But this sort of delicacy of behavior...Is simply lost on them....the NEW MONEY.. The wait staff knows...a year from now...ANOTHER IMPOSSIBLY IMPORTANT, SOON TO BE NOBODY, will be seated at this table. Rude, loud, offensive, waving that card around like it was an extension of a personal body part.. While old money, at another table... will be greeted as a old and valued friend..with excellent service to match...and ANY special requests, are a..."but of course", sir...
Bad for them ; they might have enjoyed life more _ they are not seeing their legacies from wherever their ashes are now. Millionaires are not leaving money to their children, they want them to work and succeed by themselves. And rich people who apparently lead a simple life wear white t_ shirts that cost $600,00 . This is a futile approach to what is called " old money". Let' s forget these people: their paradigmas don' t hold true for anyone but themselves. And they tend to look down on people. Let's stop being so much impressed by these people and enjoy life ourselves!
The money goes after about five generations and then what do you have. That is the question. I would not get hung up on the facade. What kind of person are you deaiing with. Is he or she friendly. Do they treat people respectfully and with interest. Do they try to do good. These are the important things. Not what they have. I might add. These old money people have not gone through the existential crises that fundamentally test your very existence. LIke those that have seen combat or those that financially especially where they have a family to support. If you have been through these you know what real fear is and how to deal with it and not fall apart It gives you a sense of true confidence. . The monied people for the most part have not come close as they have a financial safety net. I went through a double whammy of this but I was so tough by then, I took it in stride and came out better. Thats the mark of a winner. And these monied people do not have the experience of existential crises, for the most part and are weak. And the tough guys know it. They are not real men and it applies to women too. The women of today are far superior to the women of old. They work and take care of their families and this is very very hard. To their credit some monied women are truly committed to working for charity and taking care of their families and I respect them. But for the most part these monied women are parasites to their money and manufacture problems to keep themselves busy.
The funny part is this video content similar to a video from a RU-vid channel called Old Money Luxury. The exact same information so it's a copying which reveal a lower class behavior 😂😂
If you’re talking about old money, why is just about all the footage about Americans - real old money is in European families that have had money for centuries.
Don’t be fooled- there are a lot of people pretending to be rich old money style. I know because my father was one of them. His family was old money but he had none but pretended to be thrifty and driving old cars and old money family hand me downs (all were free) It was tough because I had to work multiple jobs in college to barely make it. And people thought he was just “teaching me about work ethics “ Ha what a joke. That’s how he’d spin it too. And they honestly didn’t believe me that he had no money. Well he’s very poor now and everyone knows he was full of it.
OBSERVATION: On viewing the photograph @ 2:14, depicting the casual dress code of the young upper-class as envisioned by Mr Lifshitz (aka; Ralph Lauren), one can't help thinking that, had the models been Black, the entire look would have been labeled "sloppy" instead of "Decontracter", given the insipid over-the-top display!?!
Did you have no idea what you’re talking about old money they have so much art so much of the resources of the world they may not flash their money but they sure have it when they close their doors you need to research a little bit because a lot of these old money people are funding some pretty weird things
