It’s important to understand that the reason we must go to these dark places, such as violent crime, is in the interest of prevention of future crime. In this episode, Dr. Graham Taylor is joined today by Dr. Gary Mercado, clinical psychologist, researcher, and author in the areas of violence, early psychosis, and other serious psychopathology. Gary is also the writer of The New Evil: Understanding the Emergence and Modern Violent Crime co-authored by Dr.Michael Stone. Together Graham and Gary define what evil is, understanding the horror attached to violent acts, and understand the psychological implications of what they're doing, and what's driving it. Gary talks about the development of the 22 Category Scale of Evil that looks at the factors in a person’s life as a spectrum to better understand the behavior behind the acts of violence and how this scale is being used in assisting with the capture and prevention of future violent crimes. And finally, they discuss the trends in violent crime and the reasons behind the shift from serial killings to mass murder.

Excellent video. This is the kind of video that takes pride and place in my library. I love profiling, and what makes people tick is my forte. This video is extremely insightful when it comes to understanding the human mind and getting a deeper perspective into what triggers a person to become violent and why they are violent toward other people.

When I had young children toddlers and I was home alone with them all day with continued responsibility into the evening when my partner was home I swear I heard or had thoughts in a different voice telling me horrible things I would shake my head and tell the voice no out loud if anybody had ever seen me doing it my children might have been taken away. I love my children and always have they are now adults but I couldn't cope with them and was afraid to admit to anybody. It is so important partners and families ask these questions even to seemingly coping mothers it is so draining you literally can lose your own self and become almost another person. My children were well behaved but with a few health problems which gave me further reasons for stress the self doubt is horrible and potentially a trigger for some people. So I can relate to the hearing voices as people state but more in a suggestive way than a direct command in my case giving me ultimate control.

I feel for you and I understand where you're coming from. Parenting these days is so overwhelming it's almost inhumane to expect people to cope without losing in some form or another. All the best for you.

I had those intrusive thoughts too when my kids were young (toddlers also) and I was exhausted. I had no rest , no free days, responsibility 24/7, months on end, it can make you literally go crazy.
