[PT. 1] YOU'VE GOT TO GET YOUR WRISTS ACTIVE IN THE SWING | Paddy's Golf Tip #8 | Padraig Harrington

It seems that many players have been conned into thinking that an effective, powerful swing results from turning the shoulders or using the body. In actuality, 70% of a player's speed and face control comes from how well they use the wrist.
This is Part 1 of a two-part lesson where I focus on the role that the wrists play during the swing. Be sure to set your notifications and tune in for Part 2, coming later this week.

He is such a sound golf instructor. Forget all the crap and polished productions. He just cuts to the chase, and doesn't let any schools of thought push him around. This is some of the best stuff I've seen, and I've watched a lot. He's no fluff, just logical. Thanks Paddy.

Couldn't agree more, I must have spent years trying to smash the ball using big muscles with inconsistent (and tiring!) results, this simple insight has opened my eyes to something that looks so obvious once you've clocked it but can be difficult to fathom if you're not naturally gifted (I'm not).

@@user-ii2lz3sc4gcouldn’t agree more. I returned to golf after a 40 year break. The pro got me twisting so much I did my back in. I’ve now discovered something called ‘easiest swing’. My back is fine and there’s much less effort involved.

As a scratch player Ive watched quite a few of these. What Paddy THINKS he does and what he does are two different things. This one, for example, the moment the smalls muscles and joints (wrists) are focused on, you're screwed. Not good advice. Yes he's a Hall of Famer, but MANY elite golfers can't translate what they're doing properly. "Active" wrists is not a good explanation. I think what he is means is "relaxed wrists" without tension, and let them do what they will do naturally without tension holding them off.
@joevelte4252

@@Station2Station-du2gh Yes the proper swing is to use your body to fling your loose arms and hands in a centrifugal fashion.

I used to normally flip the club and I was a fairly decent golfer somewhere around eight handicap. I started watching the golf instruction that said that it's not a good idea to flip the club and to hold lag as long as possible. And it literally tanked my game. I went to the golf range after watching the second lesson and I started getting my consistency back instantly. Thank you for sharing the information it helps out weekend 🏌🏻‍♂️

Now I watch players who are built more like I am. 5'9 - 195 lbs. Stocky. None of this left arm straight hands away from the body. Just keep the wrists loose and the arms and shoulders without tension and the ball goes farther with less effort. Just turn a little faster and more with feet,ankle knees and hips. Narrower stance helps too if your hips aren't super flexible.

@legend9018
@legend9018 3 года назад
Great video, could not agree more. So many instructors and videos are trying to increase lag by having you hold your wrist angles and not flip. What they don’t say is that all players have to release their wrist angles which means all players flip. The key is when the flip happens. Amateur players definitely release earlier than better players but we all flip. The key is timing when the release happens and lag is created by lower body rotation, not by artificially holding your wrists back. Well done Paddy 🏌🏻‍♂️

Great demonstration of the use of the wrists. I used to use them more the way you explained and could hit an acceptable distance. Now I notice I am not hinging them at the top of the swing. Tried your drill of consecutive swings with 5 balls lined up. This frees up the wrists. Excellent thank you. Got some power back.I was trying to extend my hands farther away from my body at the top but it doesn't feel smooth or natural. Too much strain and becomes unathletic.

You probably know already but your theory on skill learning is spot on. The best way to learn a new movement pattern is not to do 100s of reps of the ideal but do 100s alternating extremes around the ideal. Your body will then naturally zone in on the ideal without being forced.
