[PT. 2] WRISTS IN THE SWING- THE DETAILS | Paddy's Golf Tip #9 | Padraig Harrington

Earlier this week, I shared Part 1 of a two-part lesson which focused on the role that the wrists play during the swing. Now I'm back with Part 2 of the lesson and it's time to really get into the details.
As I mentioned in Part 1, the discussion was probably most valuable for the 'weekend warriors'- as I focused on how to just get those wrists active. In Part 2, I the focus is centered around what needs to happen once the wrists are active and working-and that comes down to focusing on the mechanics and very much, the details.
I welcome you to listen as I unpack a personal yet controversial outlook on what the wrists should do through the impact point of the swing. Let me know what your thoughts in the comments- agree or disagree?

What a time we live in. A 3 time major winner and someone that has won millions playing golf is taking time to help us average joes on RU-vid. No need to for clickbait nonsense titles, just quality instruction

This is exactly the problem I've misunderstood for years. Less and less wrist action had me hitting shorter and shorter without realising why. Took this to the range today, loosened up the wrists at both ends of the swing and CRUSHED it. Thank you so much Padraig!

Same. I quickly got too comfortable though and started to develop the terrible habit of getting way to loose with my torso and arms and I couldn’t square the face.

How cool is it that Paddy takes time out of his busy schedule (practicing and cleaning all of his trophies) to teach all of us how he plays the game. Imagine if all world class players could remember all their fans and could do the same. You’re a class act, sir. It’s amazing to see someone with so much talent, relate to those that haven’t been so fortunate.

Kudos! This is the same ulnar deviation, bowing, and the release that legendary long hitter Mike Austin taught me back in the late 1990's! You are also adding energy to the clubhead. Slap something with the back of your lead hand with a flat wrist while holding that position. Then try it with a bowed lead wrist and let it fly, that is, extend. The latter provides much more power. Thanks!

Cheers Padraig. Great lesson and one to watch often for me. So much of golf is technique and thus concept driven. If we give our brain the correct conceptual method and set it on the right path it will simply do a lot of the work for us with natural error correction as we practice/play. And just as importantly it will not work against us with its own faulty ideas. 💡

Wow been all over the place recently with driver. Tried this without any rehearsal on first tee of first comp' of the year. Crushed it straight for miles. All the rest were equal if not better. Although I did snap hook one, but persevered. Didn't work so well with irons as they were mostly out the toe. Can't wait to get back out there. Thanks so much Mr Harrington!

Fascinating! It does go against the grain of what quite a few pro’s teach. They seem to encourage more shaft lean at the point of contact. Thus actually de-lofting the club. I always sort of questioned this, since irons are more de-lofted than they were 15-20 years ago. I used to be a pretty good player years ago. I was 5-7 hdcp at my peak. Paddy said he hits his 9 iron 160 yds. I averaged 140 back than. Now at 70 yrs old the best I can muster is 110 yds. Loss of flexibility has taken its toll. Now getting any height is a struggle with my mid irons, along with hitting the ball first and then the turf. I’ll give Paddy’s instructions a go. Maybe I can pick up 10-15 yds but not actually flip the club. Thanks Paddy.
@supercrazyhorse2009

Very well explained on both Videos Padraig. What I love about this is the deviation away from some of the modern principles. Golf in some ways gas gotten way too mechanical. Some players are almost afraid to use the wrists being told it's bad. Wrists add much more speed through the ball when used properly.

Excellent sharing. Will try. This is very advanced technique and in-depth talking like this is very rare in any golf lessons. We see the pro control their wrists nicely but actually very difficult for recreational players.

Dear Mr Harrington! Thanks for your excellent advises in golf - they are so much concepted getting a natural moved swing than others and they help me getting a more powerfull swing than I had in the past. The main difference in modern golfswings and the distance which ich results is, that the clubs are "delofted" in the impact so that a 9 iron has more the distance of a 7 or 6 iron.... This is possible because a lot of companies are producing different typs of shafts who bring the ball up in the air - for example your KBS shafts. If the irons become longer, the closed and delofted face becomes more and more a problem in combination with the longer shafts - but here are helping all the hybrids and driving irons in modern golf. I'm still hitting the balls with the loft a golfclub really has and so my 9 iron is maybe 150 with a good shot. For me is important hitting a green near trhe flag, not hitting with a short iron a 190 shot (which I pull left at the end...). And if you watch Tiger Woods maybe with his good old low launching DG x100 shafts, he is hitting a longer iron than other modern players (maybe a Pwedge for 120), but he is winning with the masters two years ago again. And "shorties" like Langer are still better in augusta than many others in the past, for example like DeChambeau. If he would be one or two iron longer, he maybe would still play for the title in augusta. But he is not, he is as long as I'm; it was so in the past with persimmon woods and is now the same. I hope your tips bring me this iron longer iron distance I need for getting my controlled short iron shot to the greens I'm looking for - maybe with a delofted iron. All the best please and stay safe!

Paddy really answered several of my questions. Don't make the club face strong until downswing/transition because you don't need to close it like that on short game shots (shorter swings)... makes perfect logical sense and is less confusing long term. Please let me know if this is not what you meant, Mr. P. From 20 degrees to 5 degrees really explains it well.
