if you are a lil savy with your phone, you can change the alarm or more direct, it's the notification sounds in the app. best way is to link your phone to your laptop and drop the new sound in the notifications folder if you want a custom sound. if you choose to download an app on your phone, be warned that it may change that sound for everything. if you want to just use whats in your phone, goto settings,appa and find the iT app. under ..app settings, choose notifications then default_channel. here is where all your sounds or changes can be made. i have the inkbird ibbq 4t and changed the sounds to a custom sound.

Ugh what a relief! I have been saving up for a little while now and have had the money to get the 1150 pro series but after seeing all the bad press about the temp issues I was devastated. I’ve been dying to finally pick one up and seeing this made me feel a lot better! Although I will prob have to send in the controller box I at least know there’s light at the end of the tunnel. Thank you!!

Ok, so on Fri Jan 22 I called and they sent me a label and shipped it the same day. They received my unit the morning of Tue Jan 22, programmed it and shipped it out the same day. I received in at home yesterday, 2 days later Jan 28th. Installed it back, ran it up and down a few times. It does seem to hold the temp better within a range like your video. I do like the 10 degree increments better. I didn't have the plastic over my screen either but I didn't have scratches. They also send me the 2 rub packages. Easy process documented by Mr. Garage and his video. Thanks for your help!

Pit Boss should send you some more rub! You saved a sale. Had the same "under 300" problem and was about to haul this thing back to Lowes. Saw this, contacted Pit Boss and they responded within 24 hours (over the weekend) to get my address and send a label. I don't mind waiting 7-10 days for this fix with the temp increment upgrade. If it all works out, I'll have the best value in a pellet grill EVER. Had a PB700FB for nearly 5 years (my first pellet grill), and it was a LIFE CHANGER. It still going strong, so can use it until the controller is back. The 1150 Pro is an upgrade for me- I smoke overnight a lot, and being able to check/control the grill every few hours from under the covers of my bed, instead of getting out of bed, going downstairs, and making sure everything is OK is going to be AWESOME.

I’m glade your controller is fixed. I went ahead and got the Laredo 1000 and it’s awesome made my first cook last night. Beef ribs drumsticks jalapeño bombers bacon wrapped scallops a link of sausage and some potatoes and of course some hot dogs for my kids lol. All came out amazing my wife even baked some cookies on it. Thanks for the update happy smoking.

I bought mine at Lowe's on 3/12/2021 (date code on box was 10/2020) and it had the old firmware. Had to send in the controller in. I did the recalibration 3 times per support and after the third time it took 40+ minutes just to get to 300 after a complete cool down and would not hold a low temp.. Support was great and got me a shipping label the same day for return.

I am very glad to see this, my 1600 i just bought took over an hour to get to 350 to 360 when my temp was set to 450. Granted tonight my outside Temps are at 47 I think thats a bit excessive. Definitely seems like a lot more smoke as well!

Bought this yesterday and had the same issue. Registered my grill and called customer service. They do not require you to send the old one in anymore. They are shipping me the new one and told me to keep the old one as well.

Once you get the update, all trouble go away and the smoker kicks @ss! (but the app sucks still for android). Not that I care, the probes still work and transmit temps which is all I care about.

Great video. I am looking at this smoker vs. the Traeger 620..and I am torn! If I were to buy the Pit Boss new today, would It include the new firmware on the controller board? How would I know if the board is the most up to date?

Every time I ship boards, video cars, etc. I always write down and take picture of the serial numbers to make sure I got mine back and not a refurbished one. .

Their choice on how to support this is stupid at best. 50/50 if they make you jump through flaming pellet hoops or if they will just authorize a return and update. Never know what you will get.

The firmware on the app is not what is in the controller. Only way I know of on the controller to tell is check for 10 degree increments. Plan on your smoker not to have it.

@@XxKeRn21xX I started my process of getting the shipping label sent in on March 22. Whoever I talked to on the phone never created the label, called about 9 days later to see what was up, because the label doesn't get created by the guy on the phone, called again, said the label would be created within a couple hours, never got the email, called again later that day and was told it would be created within 72 hours, never got that label, called again and was told another 72 hours. That period came and went, finally, someone followed up and told me they were just gonna ship me an updated controller, got it Friday. Installed it today, the temps are compatible with the iPhone, but it doesn't connect very well, or give updated Actual temps. Talk about a pain in the ass...

You didn't mind the temperature in the cooking area that is lower than the set temp? I got the same grill and my is 50F lower than the temp set.

Temp variance in the cooking area can be all over the place depending on season, wind and so forth. That temperature is just a general guideline. Only the probe / temp at the meat matters.

It is far from even. I did this with a thermal imaging test in another video. Like previous pitboss barrel smokers, the heat focuses on the right side towards the stack. At first, I thought this was a major flaw. But learning those temps and placing food, I have realized what an advantage it is. Example, I always put brisket point side to the right and dial temp in at the point to 225-235. This way, the flat and point get done within 2-3F of eachother. When doing multiple meats, I can throw chuck I want to cook really slow on the far left and say a butt towards the right. Sounds nuts but once you learn it - I am totally OK with the temp spread!

No way to tell until you have it. I have only heard of one person that claimed to have the update out of box and that was a month or more ago and never a mention of it since. So likely none out of box have it IMO.

Based on your video.....other than the improved temperature graduations.....they removed the WAY over damped update rate on the temperature, and they increased the Gain as well. Much Much better! I get my board back on Monday for my PBV4PS2......can't wait to have those extra graduations. Appreciate your timely updates and great videos.

If you can adjust the 200 degree range by 10 degrees at a time, you haave the new one. I just picked up an 1150 and it did not have the new controller. Pitboss already got back to me and said once they have more in stock (4-6 weeks) they will send me one. They are really good with their customer service.

After watching all your videos on this smoker, I'm curious for your thoughts on a question I have. My portable propane grill died and I'm replacing it (don't need a portable one anymore). Could you see this grill being leveraged as a normal grill for everyday bbqing, steaks/burgers/brats/etc. I've already got a vertical pellet smoker, but I thought this might be cool for giving some smokier flavors IF it's also worthy as a normal BBQ. Thoughts?

It could be if you do not mind a longer initial warm up / burn off time over a standard propane grill. The updated controller firmware is a MUST if you plan to use it full time as it is SLOOOOOOW to warm up without it.

Have you any issues with the accuracy of the probes? I just did my first cook on the 1150 and the temp on the probe was off 30 degrees. I cooked a tri tip roast and set the probe for 135 inside the meat. When I got the alert from the app I went and checked with a food thermometer it was 100.

My probes have been accurate. Depends on the depth of the probe and placement too. Try a pan of hot water. Put both the food thermometer and the probe into them and see how far off each is. Then compare with another thermometer.

Where do you place the MPC probe? I know that the meet probe goes in the meet, but MPC aux connection doesn't show in the book where to place the actual probe in the grill.

Place it just in front of the meat. This will give you the exact temp the meat will cook at. The display temp is just a general setting temp and it will vary wildly at the meat depending on outside temp, wind, or other weather factors.

How is the smoke flavor on the new pit boss 1150?? I just Sold my pit boss 1100 and the 75 degree temp swings drove me insane, along with uneven temps across the grates, and the smoke flavor just wasnt there! Now I here about smoke tubes and trying different pellets.. do the smoke tubes really help get close to stick burner flavor?

Not totally sure what your idea of smoke flavor is. Some think it should taste like bottled smoke,, others like it was cold smoked. I have never had a problem getting all the flavor I want out of a pellet smoker. Key is to cook as low and slow as possible. I aim for 215-225 at the meat in most all cases. Temp swings are never bad, in fact they introduce more smoke as the smoker dumps pellets and puffs a lot of smoke to catch back up heat wise.

Indeed, each controller would need its own update for the specific model. Right now, only the 1150 update is available.

So today, 4/13/2021, I picked up my new PB 1150 from Lowes and assembled it. I plugged it in and figured out that I have the "old" firmware in my control board. I immediately called PB and they first told me that they were only swapping out the control boards if there were temp issues. I told her I thought I was getting a smoker that had 10º temp increments. She then said I'd have to register my product (which I had just done) start a "case" and that it would take 10-14 days to receive a new one. They apparently don't have you send the old one back in to them now. I just really hope I get one with the updated firmware. Anyone else have any different experiences recently? Luckily she didn't say I'd have to pay for it. I was waiting for that.

Have you checked your barrel temps? It seems pitboss is just telling us what we want to hear with the update. Look at your probe...it’s still 50 degrees lower than your setting. Many people have this same problem with the update.

You do realize the setting temp vs probe temp is meaningless? Setting temp is no different than a random value like 5 or 10. Wind, ambient temp and so forth can vary barrel vs temp at the meat drastically. Setting in the summer vs. winter varies drastically. The ONLY temp that ever matters is temp at the meat. The setting is a nice to have when it is close to what you want. Once you know a smoker, you know the offset. Now at this test temp with an outside temp of 75F with a blend of classic / charcoal pellets (yes pellets also make a big difference with temp) At 180 setting (s), probe was 179ish (virtually no difference) At 230 setting, probe was 205 (25 degree difference) At 250 setting, probe was 225 (25 degree difference) At 300 setting, probe was 266 (34 degrees difference) If it was a summer day, I bet the split in temp narrows down to 10 degrees or so. If it was a winter day and blowing, it may be 50 degrees. And as I said the only temp that matters is at the meat. Adjust for what you want. Simple as that. If you worry about this or have a need for it to match, buy an insulated blanket made for the smoker.

And, am I understanding this right??? You're saying that the set temp is just a nuke range desire but the smaller temp reading to its right is actually what the temp is in the barrel ???

Always place one probe near the meat. This is your actual temp. The barrel probe can and usually us ALWAYS off due to wind, ambient temp and so forth. It is just a guideline for what setting you are on and that is IT. Example, it could be spot on if temp is 80F and no wind! Could be WAY off if 50 degrees and wind. Probe next to the meat will always be correct.

For the cash and post update, I would buy this smoker again without question. The app does suck even more after the update as temp settings are not compatible with android, but I do feel it is the best bang for the buck there is. If I was forced to stay with the unit as it was without the update, I likely would be thinking about trying something else.

Not that I am aware of. One subscriber mentioned hers had the update. You will know if you have 10 degree increments. But really, if you have to send it in, don't sweat it. Super simple process. Was about 1/100th the work of assembling the smoker :)

I got my new controller in the mail yesterday. Hopefully it solves the heating times issue in my Pro Series 1600. It really irritates me that they decided 425 and 475 degrees were useless, and we are not allowed to cook at those temps. Pit Boss is the only manufacturer that I know of that has a PID without 5 degree increments from the lowest to the highest setting. What is the point of putting a PID in the thing if you cant be precise with your cooking temps? The low temp should be 150 or 160 on these as well. 180 is too high for a lot of things.

180 or "S" is just a setting. Actual temp at the meat would be around 150ish. Temp at the meat depends on so many factors with any smoker so the values are rather pointless. They are just guidelines IMO.

10-302021. Looking to purchase Pro Series II 850 soon. Do you know if these have controllers with 10 degree increments? Are the 850’s having any issues? Could really go with the Pro Series 600 regarding size. So if I got it instead, and added controller for 150, I wonder if the controller would be the updated one?

I see you posted this in January, so I'm hoping the units that are at Lowes currently have the upgraded controller! It sucks that people are going through all this trouble. So as long as the unit I buy does the 10 degree increments I have the upgraded controller?

@@MR_Garage Thanks for your review. It was very helpful! I've been reading a lot of negative reviews about this new grill and they are all about the temp control. All of the reviews are in the Jan-Feb date range. It makes me wonder if these people are grilling during very cold temperatures too. This winter has been extremely cold across the U.S. so it doesn't surprise me that people are having temp issues with their grills. (Especially if they don't have the thermal cover needed for colder temps) It has to work extra hard to keep a certain temperature... I think once it starts to get warmer out, there won't be anymore temp issues.

Indeed, most have ZERO clue. They think it should work like the electric oven in their house (which also has temp swings, but will not show it). Combine that with trying to smoke in 20 degree weather with wind blowing... lol. Just crazy. That is why I think instead of temperature on the display, they need to just have settings. Like setting 1-20 which corresponds to a temperature range. Because smoking in 20 degrees is VERY different VS. 110 degrees. Totally different temp swing profile and readings. Truly, a science so many cannot wrap their heads around, although a very simple science. Bottom line, just dial in and target the desired temp AT the meat. Let it go! Stop looking at the display temp lol

That would be the process. I have not heard of or been made aware of any units in stores having the update yet. Really is not a big deal on the exchange.

I'm skeptical that the app will ever be what we want it to be, because the market we're in is so niche. It's a niche of a niche. If they only sell 20k total grills that need this app per year, they'll only get maybe 5k total DLs and of those, not enough revenue comes in from it. Pit Boss is really not going to support the SmokeIT app full stop because it'd cost too much money. They've got a kid in some city updating this thing. I wouldn't download it. I wish they had some generic controller app with simple read outs and settings. But, of course, it all has to be proprietary.

When you first start the smoker, it will be on the S or "smoke" setting. Lowest temp = most smoke. So you can call this start or smoke setting.

Smoke / Start setting is the S setting which is defaulted when you turn the smoker on. It is the lowest temp setting / produces the most smoke. Not adjustable.

Does you "IT" logo ever blink on your PID controller? I just picked up my new Pro Series 850 on Saturday and that IT logo is constantly blinking. I have no idea what that means. I also contacted Pit Boss tech support about the firmware update and I'm waiting to hear back from them. I don't have the 10 degree increments on my unit.

1150 has been rock solid as a smoker after the updated controller. The app works great for probes and alarms but temp settings are still totally broken and do not work. I would still buy it again as I set and forget. I do not need to play with temps on the app.

How does the SmokeiT app work with the new firmware update? I’ve heard that it will change the set temperature when you open it up to the 25 degree increments from what’s on the actual smoker.

Temp changes do not work at all with the app after the update. Worse than before. Probe alarms and temp all work and that is all I wanted anyways.

Opening the cap in my testing made virtually no difference in warm weather and actually caused a bit of a struggle in cold weather temp wise with the previous firmware. Need to try it with the new firmware. In the video, my test probe was dead center middle, elevated 1" off the grate. In 75F weather, I was around 25F off at a normal cooking temp. 40F this weekend, I was around 45F off. All normal as temp setting is just that, a setting. Long as temp at the meat is where you want it, nothing else matters.

@@MR_Garage I agree there. Down here in South Texas we have about the same weather as you. This is why I tell folks test what temp does what on which side of the barrel of the barrel so you can cook comfortably with it. For me, 210* gives me about 215*-220* in the center and 240-250 on the far right. I'll stick with this and do my cooks that way but again, folks just need to do their own testing and see what setting works best for them.

Looking to purchase the 1150 at my local Lowes. How long you think I should wait to purchase so I don't have to send in the display to have it updated? Or do you think its gonna need update no matter how long I wait to get it? I pretty sure since your video update just hit day before I wrote this comment and Lowes has about 12 in stock now, but would probably need the update.. Pit Boss should recall them and fix it, before sending to the stores to sell

I have no answer for that. Not even sure if this firmware version has made the production lines yet and I would have no way to know that. It really is simple though. Buy it, send in the controller. A week is not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. I doubt the will recall. It is far easier to have controllers sent back vs. 200+lb smokers which can be damaged in transit.

Just a note to say that after seeing the new flash upgrade video, I had this same concern about how long to wait, and asked Pitboss by email how long it would be for the new controllers to be in stock. Pitboss said, the newer controllers shouldn’t have the temp issue, and if yours does, call. And do the 350 thing. They didn’t answer my question directly, which leads me to believe it is going to be some time. I am confident they have no plans to change out current stock. So I bought, thinking I can always send in, and a week is no big deal , and certainly quicker than waiting several months. Should be delivered this week.

Just a follow up to say that my 1150 was delivered today, and after doing a couple of burn offs to 350 then down to 225, mine held the 225 temp just fine. I am so happy. I am not likely to send my controller in to reset just for the 10 degree increments.

It does, especially if cold out. Get the controller updated and it seems to heat much faster. What temp are you aiming for? Some try to run these at 400 like it is a propane bbq 😅 That would take ages and not what the smoker is for.

Good smoke from any smoker does not look like much. It is a thin blue / pale smoke. If you do not think it is smoking, open the lid and take a deep breath. If you gag and can't breath, then the smoke is there in spades :) If you want a colder smoke flavor / dirty smoke flavor, turn the temp way down to the S setting or around 180F for the first 4-6 hours.

That smoke comes from more of a temp swing. As temp drops, pellets are added, that is when you get more smoke. I mentioned this in the video because this firmware update seemed to have a little more delay before it would dump more pellets allowing a bit more temp swing.

I would forget the old connection and start fresh. Mine did work out of the box however. Took a while for the wifi to start updating the temp initially in the app.

Bad news.....got my Series 4 Controller back.....and they didn't do anything to it.....no note or email or update of my case. Ugh. So I called and talked to a manager there....and they told me that whoever is telling us that the Series 4 can be updated is completely wrong. He said there is no plans whatsoever to change the firmware.....no real apology......just blunt and to the point. Basically....if you don't like the graduations at 25/50 degs, then you need to return it.

And luckily for me, I was a bit late to the party....because the first people actually got their control boards bricked....without any local spares....so they are in a holding pattern, until more are made I guess. Good news for me is that I solved my WiFi issue on the 4 series....so opening it up and sending it off got me to investigate the boards.

Help me understand, I got my new control with the 10 degree increments last week for my May 21 Pit Boss 1150 purchase. I’ve installed it and the smoker works as expected. next, I plugged in 3 probes, one in the meat (Boston Butt), and one either side of the meat (just l hanging from upper rack). I set the temp to 250 and let her rip. My question is what am I supposed to monitor? The big ACT/SET display floats around 250, but the probes left and right of the meat are always way lower (up to 20 degrees lower, and also the right side is higher than the left). So, will these eventually match the ACT/SET temp, or do I just keep turning up the temp till the probes reach 250?

So, the big number on the display. Ignore that one. It is really just a setting value. It could be 1-10 for all it matters as the actual temp inside can vary depending on wind, and ambient temp. Now, place a probe on a rise directly in front of the meat you plan to cook. That is the temp you want to pay attention to. Plug it into the #1 port. Adjust the main temp until that probe reads the temp you want (225 IMO on a butt). There will always be a temp difference left to right. Use it to your advantage on larger meats like brisket. Always put the big point to the ridge and a flat to the left. Place the temp probe in front in the middle of the meat. It should cook pretty even so as you get to 203-205ish internal temp, both the flat and point should be within 3F of eachother.

Firmware came out under 2 weeks ago. Nothing on the shelf will have it. Quickest way to tell, if no 10 degree increments between 200 and 300F, then you do not have it.

I never pushed the issue with pit boss. It was clearly a handling issue on their side and not shipping. Unit was placed in a thick medical supply zip lock bag. Unfortunately I was not the only one this happened too. A few others on the pot boss group had their scratched up worse than mine!

Greetings all. Mike, no questions are stupid. Any question a person chooses not to ask would eventually be asked by someone else. You're a pioneer. You are correct. The app seems to be unable to register the 270F temperature. If you set 260F at the control board, the app registers 260F. If you set 270F at the control board, the app registers 280F. If you set 280F at the control board, the app registers 280F. I have confirmed your findings, and I'm sure others will as well. Take care. -Z

Not a fan of the 10 degree increments. I smoke at 225. I'm researching which to buy.....pellet grill, or vertical pellet smoker, and this might be a "boner killer".
