I enjoy your offerings so much. I'm a hobby builder in the Pacific northwest near Seattle. The different woods that you are using engage many questions. 1. I would like to know the hardness and other facts about the beautiful woods you are using. ( as you go along) 2. Can you please play these fine guitars and maybe use major chords, that would be fun and most appreciated.
Excellent questions Peter and I will attempt to answer them in future videos and when I play them, I'll include some major chords on their own. I've built several guitars from Koa and quite a few from Australian blackwood. They are practically identical in all ways. Both are from the acacia family and have a hardness of about 1150 lb/in2. A little harder than Honduran mahogany with a little sweeter mids and a little more sparkle in the upper end. Very easy to bend with medium size pores. I have some sets that would give the very best Koa a run for its money as far as looks go.
Hiya Craig. Looks very nice so far! I was wondering how you would deal with the little chunk missing where the back braces were cut through....binding! of course! duh Looking forward to the next installment....
Actually, it's a good question. Many of the big manufacturers are now not using bindings so that they can save money. You just have to be really careful not to bump the edges. Disposable guitars are getting closer if the big companies have their way.
