Filmed during the class we taught at Fightcamp 2023. The class was about bayonet and sword use in small melee combat. We delved into various sources from the early 19th century up until ww2 to consider the bayonet in different contexts and uses as well as to test various theories and arguments which existed regarding the superiority of the sword v bayonet. We ended this class with a segment where the participants could use pugil sticks in sparring exchanges to understand their use as a close in brawling tool and not merely the ranged thrust attacks and formation fighting more common in 18th and 19th century bayonet fencing.
These pugil sticks are based upon those created for the US military in the 1940s and still used today, however the design has been modified to better represent a late 19th century rifle and bayonet. This means they are significantly larger and more unwieldy than a typical military pugil stick. See the video below for more info -
• Using Pugil Sticks for...
As this was an open class at an event it features fencers with a wide variety of experience and training from relative beginners to very experienced fencers. However, for most it was their first time with the pugil sticks. Contact levels were at the descretion of both participants.

Cool & Fun! Timing and distance, as always, are key. I hope you keep working on refining the simulators, they show a lot of promise!

Looks fun! How do you find these compared to other rifle & bayonet trainers?

Really a world apart because all other bayoner trainers are focused on point work and really nothing else. These lack the finesse of those other trainers but simulate all the other aspects better. They give a real feel for the unwieldy bulk of the full weight weapon with bayonet, they allow a more aggressive in fighting and wrestling sort of mechanic. It's hard to make a direct comparison as they are intended for a different kind of training, a very complementary one I would say.

Thanks for posting this Nick. I’m now going to make a Trap Remix of Charles getting hit in the face by Aaron. Appreciate everything you do for the sport. Cheers!

I was wondering if y'all could point me to some treatise I could use for inspiration for a story I'm writing. I want to incorporate real weapons training to the story since it's about 16 year olds boys (tuuyas) going through their mandatory basic training. I'm looking for treatise that use similar weapons in similar fashions. Here's a description of their weapons and how they use them: **Spears:** - **Length:** The transitional spears used by the tuuyas are moderately long, measuring around 2.7 to 3.3 meters (approximately 9 to 11 feet) in length. - **Design:** These spears are designed for both thrusting and limited striking. They have a pointed metal tip for thrusting attacks, while the wooden shaft allows for controlled strikes if needed. - **Versatility:** The length and design of these spears make them suitable for engaging opponents at moderate distances, allowing tuuyas to use them effectively within the formation. **Shields:** - **Size:** The shields used during the transitional period are smaller than the archaic boss shields but larger than the later hoplite shields. They have a diameter of about 70 to 80 centimeters (approximately 27 to 31 inches). - **Shape:** The shields are round or slightly convex, with a prominent central boss that is used for both defense and limited offense. - **Materials:** These shields are constructed from a wooden frame covered with layered leather, providing a balance of protection and maneuverability. - **Mobility:** The smaller size of the shields allows for greater mobility and coordination within the formation. **Transitional Features:** - The transitional spears and shields reflect a balance between the offensive capabilities of archaic weaponry and the maneuverability of hoplite equipment. - The design of the spears allows for both thrusting attacks and controlled strikes, while the shields provide solid protection with the central boss as a focal point for offense. **Cultural and Training Context:** - The tuuyas' training with these transitional weapons demonstrates their adaptability to changing combat styles and their preparedness to transition to the more specialized hoplite equipment.

Was a great session as well - will we see any of the group bayonet stuff on here as well?

Great to hear it. Most of the group stuff was not recorded so I won't put a full video out about it. We have three rounds of the Gordon vs standard method. Perhaps I will make a video about that soon and use the clips in that.
