How to easily remove a extremely stuck pulley from an older small engine crankshaft (8hp Briggs and Stratton from a Toro Riding lawn mower ).
Before this I tried heat, a puller, air hammer and even soaked overnight in oil. Nothing made a difference. This worked however and took all of 2 minutes. Give it a shot before cutting it off..

I ended up trashing my pulley from crowbar and heat. Then I used you idea by tapping a 1/2" 13 tread into the hole. It came off like butter on my spear tractor. 😊 Thank You So Much 👍🏻

I used your method on a 16.5 hp Kohler, except I used a 5/16" nut and threaded rod with jam nuts. Worked great!! Thank you!

I just finished replacing the blade drive (that thing in your hand) and the belt on my lawnmower last week. I tried the conventional elbow grease, soaking it in WD40, even got the propane torch out to see if it would expand a bit, but nothing doing. What did it for me was my trusty air tools. I used a jackhammer bit and put it on as close to parallel with the shaft as I could, and gave 'er. It took a few seconds, but it eventually started sliding down and off completely. The spacer inside came out okay, but I had to carefully line it up and slam it down the hole of the new drive. Talk about tight tolerances! Slipping on the new drive was a couple of bangs with a piece of wood and a hammer, but otherwise, it runs pretty firm now. Over 15 years on one belt! And we don't live on a postage stamp . Thanks for the vid!

I was trying to get a pulley off a Briggs engine on an old rototiller, so I used a pulley puller on it. I made the mistake of hooking the puller hooks on the pulley flanges (where else ya gonna hook em?). Turns out the pulley was just cast metal and as soon as I put any tension on the puller, the flange snapped - pulley ruined. Now that the pulley was broken and I wasn't risking damaging it, I tried hooking the puller hooks on the inside of the outer flange where the belt rides, but that surface is sloped and polished smooth so the puller hooks had trouble getting a purchase. But with a little jiggering, It did work and I got the pulley off, but I think in future I would have to make some sort of plate to go on the inside of the pulley to transfer the load of the hooks to the hub of the pulley, or at least distribute it evenly around the flange to prevent breaking it.

If the shaft extends beyond the pulley (e.g. PTO clutch goes on after the pulley), you'll need some kind of cylindrical spacer that fits over the shaft. Tack weld spacer to pulley and nut to spacer. Just to clarify, use a smaller diameter threaded bolt than the shaft bolt so you don't booger up the crucial threads. Wonder if you could super glue or epoxy instead of weld, then dissolve with acetone or melt loose later.

Good idea. The heat from welding might have helped also.

so, I'm changing a 8 hp briggs out, taking it from a homolite mower and putting it on a snapper, there both rear engine riders, but the snapper has a threaded single pulley with no woodruff key, and the good motor has a double pulley with a woodruff key, are the pulleys interchangeable?

there is a key that goes between the pulley and shaft that snugs it up. do you put the key in first then the pulley or put the pulley on first, then the key?

I have one that is a real booger. It's the hydro drive pulley on a briggs 26hp . That collar is froze on there. I've broke bolts using a puller and a sliding hammer

if you dont have a welder you can drill and tap the pulley, Put a six inch bolt in the hole with washers on it. Use a tierod seperator and pound it off. Heat doesn't hurt. Thrust surface of pulley doesn't get screwed up.

Thanks for the video. I'm trying to remove the 5/8" nut off the engine pulley, but when I go to turn it the whole engine turns, so i can't get any good torque on the nut to break it loose? How do I lock up the engine so I can crank on the nut?
@digitalPimple
@digitalPimple 6 лет назад
If you can, use a screwdriver of something to lock the flywheel (At the fins).
@cracker0190
@cracker0190 6 лет назад
If you have enough shaft exposed like I did get some vice grips on it and hold on for dear life
@midgyrich
@midgyrich 6 лет назад
While the screwdriver flywheel technique would work, you risk breaking the fins. I would recommend removing the sparkplug, making sure the piston is at the bottom, and inserting a few feet of rope. This should block the piston without harming or scratching anything.

I am struggling with a lawn mower pulley and I wanna try your idea but I don't have a welder is there another way Try to get the pulley off that's similar if so could you tell me n plz be specific?
@digitalPimple
@digitalPimple 9 лет назад
They can be nearly impossible. This was the only way I got mine off. Most people give up and never get them off. Try heat. Height heat. Some people do candle wax or go with heat and an air chisel. Best I can suggest.

good, I willl do that but I will NOT cut it back off afterwards, whats the worst that can happen with it on - it stays until next time I need it. I know it would cost the manufacturers of such things at least 2p to do this, but really FFKS what is wrong with these so called 'designers' that they never ever seem willing to do things that will make peoples lives easier when maintaining their crap?

Couldn't have been stuck too bad or that 1/4 bolt would stripped under very little torque
