You are 100% correct. The "last" shot of the story is Bruce Willis riding off on the bike with his girlfriend. This film is such a masterpiece. Not only is it a fantastic script (it won the Oscar for Best Screenplay), the performances are outstanding, and the directing is legendary. This film influenced SO many other filmmakers. It changed filmmaking when it came out. That's the reason its so well remembered 30 years on 🙂
Btw guys, “punchy” is a derogatory term for someone who’s slow or stuttery. Calling a fighter it is especially derogatory. Means they got hit one too many times and are slow whitted now.
Timeline starts when you first see Sam and John... then the Bonnie situation.... then the diner... then met with Wallace and you see Bruce.... then it jumps to fight night.... when Bruce said Zed is dead baby....zed is dead.... that's the end of the story
22:30 I read a fan theory that this might be a common thing Wallace does to see if he can trust members of his crew. If they can take Mia out and not make a move on her, then they're really on the inner circle.
When you guys were trying to figure out the title of the movie in the beginning “Pulp Fiction” you have to look at it like this, imagine you telling this story to let’s say a co-worker right! it would seem to him such a extraordinarily unbelievable (pulp-fiction) of a story that he wouldn’t believe you, that fact that we all have moments in life whether you talk to someone or act on certain things that set a motion of events that you would otherwise never know what the outcome of your actions truly is unless you look at it from a broader perspective which in this case we see it play out through a movie and thus life itself can truly be Pulp Fiction!
16:02 Calling someone "punchy" isn't a compliment. It basically means dumb, or 'out of it'. He also called him "palooka", which is boxing lingo for 'bum', or 'jobber'.
aaah.... actually...."Punchy" is a term for a boxer who is "punch drunk" from too many fights (this is NOT a complement). when Vega talks to his supplier, he tells him Butch keyed his car. OH! Marcellas doesn't trust his wife, thus, the date with Vega. and they did not win the dance trophy, they stole it.
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is simply one of the best movies of all-time; although you have to know about the Tate-Labianca murders to fully appreciate it.
100%. It's my personal favourite QT film, and I think its his best tbh. And totally agree, you need to know the history for it to really resonate. It's a fantastic film without the knowledge, but to me a masterpiece if you do.
Dasha from Russia (reaction channel) recently did Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Despite being young and her first language not being English, she took the time to study the Tate-LaBianca murders before watching, and it was obvious that it made all the difference in the world in the way she experienced the film. I always suggest people watch at least one documentary about the Manson “family” before tackling that movie, and it was glorious to see someone actually take the time and energy to do it.
Didn't understand one thing... Why the hell did Vincent Vega draw a gun in a car? There's no any logic behind this because they both had to hide their guns leaving the building through the lift and doorway. And they weren't in a hurry at the moment either.
Some people pointed out that heroin users sometimes get twitches (and Vincent had the finger on the trigger like an idiot), and also have constipation (which explains that he was for so long and so many times in the toilet).
The beginning of the movie is really in the car on the way to recover the case from apt bros. The end is when Bruce Willis rides off into the sunset with his girl
#teamDieHardisNOTchristmas - You don't find the movie in the christmas section, you find the movie in the action section. If every action movie that takes place at Christmas is a Christmas movie you have Long Kiss Goodnight as a christmas movie, Reindeer Games, a TON of action movies take place at Christmas but nobody ever walked into a movie rental place when they were still around and walked over to the Christmas section to find Die Hard - and if they did, it wasn't there - it was over in Action.
@@CampCrystalCharlie He produced and wrote 10 films , Not including dusk to dawn. Check them all out because It's Quentin Tarantino. He says he's gonna be Retiring... Oh by the way the hateful 8 is a little disturbing In more ways than 1
The mob wife always wants to be out on the town being "seen" as the powerful lady she believes she is so the boss has her accompanied by people he trusts to look out for her well being. That's not "his coke" in the jacket it's his high-grade Heroin 🥴☠
@@foljs5858You might be right. But it does sound like Elvis, which would make sense for the theme of the place they're in that has employees dressed up as old-time celebrities.
@@leniobarcelos1770 Yes when they arrived at the restaurant she mentioned to him that she thought an Elvis fan like him would enjoy this place and with all the waiters and waitresses dressed up as celebrities from the 40s, 50s and 60s she said into the mic in an Elvis sounding voice "Vincent Vega" which was his name.
They didn't try to intimidate or wanna kill Marvin. He was their friend who snitched on the guys who they killed in the beginning... Travolta was just talking carelessly with a loaded gun in his hand when it went off
Haven't seen this movie in awhile now I just realized that when Jules said "Marcelle Wallace doesn't like to be f**ked by anyone except Miss Wallace" was foreshadowing.
16:20 "Punchy" is a derogatory term towards a boxer who is either a journeyman that never wins fights, or someone who takes dives for money. in this case, Butch is deciding to be the latter... or is he? 19:56 Wifey looked a little confused here, Martin And Lewis were a Caucasian Comedy duo, Amos And Andy were an African American Comedy duo. 27:02 she said Vincent Vega. 28:45 because of the way it was packaged, she snorted the heroin thinking it was coke.
"Who's motorcycle is this?" "It's not motorcycle, baby it's a chopper" "Who's chopper is this?" "Zed's" "Who's Zed" "Zed's dead, baby. Zed's dead" Iconic lines in this film.
You are the first reactors that I've seen, that figured out why Marceles was in that neighborhood. Everyone always says "what are the odds? ". And yes that's his gun. 😆
Just like the Bartender, Marcellus himself came out retirement and returned to “the field” to assist with the search for Butch. And since Jules had already retired to “walk the earth” he joined Vincent instead. Vincent is a handgun man, as we see. So the Uzi likely belonged to Marcellus
really?? LOL. @key made a great point, don't miss it. Even the best reviewer (Dasha) missed that point on first watch. Watch more of these Pulp first time watches and you will not find another that nails that coffee/donut point about Wallace (Yes Almost Everyone knows it NOW) 🙏🏾 @@HD00957
no it's not his gun. Marcellus was miles away. bruce drove pretty fast for miles, before he saw Marcellus. what's more, Marcellus was a boss, he's not going to be getting his own coffee. Vincent Vega played kind of a dunce throughout the whole movie.
@@klausrain111 But you forget, Vincent was one of Marcellus' good friends. So why wouldn't he grab coffee and donuts for him and Vincent? He doesn't treat Vincent like anyone else considering Vincent took Mia out the night before.
After starring in the TV sit-com Welcome Back, Kotter, John Travolta's big break out movie role was Saturday Night Fever in 1977 where he did a lot of disco dancing. He also was in the musical Grease in 1978. So, yeah, he was known for his dancing. His career kind of faded until Tarantino cast him in Pulp Fiction which revitalized his career.
1:11:02 Butch did what his dad would have done - look out for another man who is in common danger. Just like Christopher Walken’s character told him you look out for one another.
A code of honour, drifting down the decades, encoded in his genes, or at least in the bond of men. There are some things you can't let pass, at the end of the day you have to get up and look at yourself in the mirror. You want to like the image that's looking back.
Watch all of Tarantino's films (he's only made 9 in 30 years). All of them are cinematic masterpieces. Everyone ranks them in different order depending on their personal preference, but all of them are worth a watch. Enjoy 🙂
@@CampCrystalCharlie So if you haven't seen Reservoir Dogs, that should be next, followed by Four Rooms (even though that is only about one-quarter his movie). People forget about Four Rooms.
@@Mertztillithurts Four Rooms isn't counted as part of "Tarantino's Ten". Same as True Romance and Natural Born Killers. Yes, he wrote them, but they are not his films as he did not direct them. In order, his films are - Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill vol.1, Kill Bill vol.2 Inglorious Bastards, Django, Hateful 8, Once upon a time. Nine so far, with a tenth and final one to come.
Tarantino said that Vincent didn’t think he should go to Butch’s place bc he’s not stupid enough to go home. Wallace told him to go anyway and also went with him since Jules quit. The scene where they discussed it was cut from the final edit. Also, Butch is the guy that keyed Vincent’s car for calling him punchy. The reason Mia od’d is bc she snorted it thinking it was coke but it was heroin. She thought it was coke bc it was in a baggie not a balloon. Remember that Vincent’s dealer said he was out of balloons and asked him if a baggie was ok.
RE: Butch keying Vince's car. How would he know what car Vincent drove? Vince and Jules had to share a cab to the diner after leaving Monster Joe's. That would mean they also needed a cab to get to the club to deliver the briefcase to Marcellus. That's when Vince and Butch cross paths. So, when did Butch ever see Vince's convertible??
The white liquid Mia was throwing up was the $5 Martin and Lewis (vanilla) milk shake. Vincent is always in the bathroom because heroin causes constipation. Tarantino doesn't leave those little details out.
If Mia was such a cokehead, regardless of packaging she should have taken a tiny taste of the product to see how fast her tongue went numb. This not only would verify it was coke but whether it was cut heavily. I kind of wish I didn't know that - at least I thank God I never got addicted. I saw a few friends go down that road tho. :(
There are so many good lines in this movie, but my favorite is when Jules is face ti face with Ringo across the table, gun in hand, and he says, "Now I'd like that. But that shit ain't the truth. The truth is *you're* the weak. And I am the tyranny of evil men. But I'm trying, Ringo. I'm trying real hard to be the Shepherd." Chills. Every time.
The scene in the bar where Vincent called Butch a palooka, then says you heard me just fine punchy. That was an insult. A Palooka is not a compliment. That is why Bruce's charter looked surprised. He was shocked that someone else other than Wallace knew there was going to be a fix.
A common interpretation of this film is that it involves a constant theme of redemption. Those who accept a sign to change their ways end up escaping the criminal life in one piece, despite any previous wrongdoing (ironically, a sentiment Vincent mentions as they clean the car). Butch remembers the story of his father's watch and goes back to save Marsellus, and is rewarded with a new life. Jules and Vincent are saved from the bullets, and while Jules accepts the sign, Vincent doesn't, and that's why Vincent dies. Great reaction from both of you. This is one of my all time favorites. It's possibly the coolest movie out there.
Even Marsellus, though not leaving the criminal life, calls it even with Butch. It seems like a realization that his own actions have some fault for the situation. He could have, in the first place, just said “Hey, that’s part of this life. You win some, you lose some. I’ll be more cautious in my trust next time.” Instead, he let pride f with him, and got very vindictive about the situation. Maybe that’s a lesson to heed his own advice, rather than just giving it.
A masterclass in character dialogue and non linear storytelling, Pulp Fiction is one of the greatest American films of the last three decades. I further recommend the following Tarantino films if you’ve not seen them yet: Jackie Brown, Inglorious Bastards, Reservoir Dogs and The Hateful 8. Oh yeah, you were right! Tarantino DID work on From Dusk To Dawn! He wrote the screenplay with his friend Robert Rodriguez, who directed it….Years later he would work with Rodriguez again on the double feature Grindhouse Presents: Planet Terror and Death Proof. Definitely films worth checking out. They’re nostalgic AF.
I can see this defiantly being the greatest, this story was just amazing and yeah we're watching all of QT movies and we actually watched Reservoir Dogs =D Be on the look out for the couples channel announcement because we'll be uploading over there from now on.
I love that although the storytelling is non linear the message really isn't. If you view it through Samuel’s arc its actually pretty linear. We start off with the robbery where he shows that he's changed and than we see how he became a changed man.
Some people have a tough time mentally laying out the timeline.. you guys had a fantastic grasp of it… it shows that you loved it and payed close attention. Great reaction guys!!
I’ve watched this movie many times and you are the 1st people ever to point out that something miraculous happens to someone in every scene. Can’t believe I never caught it.
If you do end up watching "Death Proof" - Tarantino and his buddy Robert Rodriguez got together and they each made a movie and they released the two movies together as a double feature under the name "Grind House". Tarantino's movie was "Death Proof" and Rodriguez's movie was "Planet Terror". When the double feature played in theaters they also had other film maker friends make fake trailers for fake movies and they showed the trailers along with the two "main features". If you do watch them, I'd recommend watching the entire "grind house" experience - two movies along with fake trailers. Also, you mentioned "From Dusk Till Dawn" - that was a movie written by Tarantino and directed by Robert Rodriquez.
@@Wearywastrel Yes, exactly! When the house lights went down and the film started playing it genuinely felt like being transported back in time! Magical!
The idea of your friend taking your wife out is because ideally, you can trust the person she's going out with. He keeps her entertained and from getting lonely. The converse to this is, youre away on business, she gets lonely, she meets some guy who doesnt know or care about you as her husband, and sleeps with her.
Best movie of the 1990s. Not even kidding. The look on your face when Vincent shot Marvin was the same as mine and everybody else's in the cinema. The three main characters -- Jules, Vincent and Butch -- all got the opportunity to find redemption. Butch (some things just shouldn't happen to *anybody* ) and Jules chose redemption, while Vincent did not. Butch and Jules lived, and Vincent didn't.
1994 had some juggernauts. I get your sentiment but Im not sure this is even the best movie of that year. I give the slight edge to Shawshank Redemption, but I loved both
For the love of God Samuel L. Jackson calling himself "The tyranny of evil men" is the only person who can say it and have it be believable.....put that line back in! Good reaction
I'm not sure if anyone commented this yet but if you go back to the beginning of the movie in the diner and listen really close you can hear Jules and Vincent in the background talking and you actually see Vincent walking to the bathroom.
One of the themes in the movie IS peoole getting saved, which is why Zeds chopper was named "Grace", as in Saving Grace. And youre the first channel ive ever seen that even noticed the amount of miracles that happen
Why did Marcellus ask Vincent to take Mia out? Because she wanted that dance trophy, and Marcellus was not down to shake his ass on stage, but he won't let his wife want for nothin, so he tasked his best-dancing gangster to make sure she got that trophy. And that's why Quentin's writing is brilliant, because you can 'see' that scene happening between Marcellus and Mia without it being scripted or shot.
I disagree. IMHO, Marcellus knew that Vincent wasn't a very good gangster. I think Marcellus asked Vincent to take out Mia as a test to see if he could be trusted. I'm sure he told Mia to let him know if Vincent said, did, or tried anything inappropriate. He was testing Vincent's loyalty.
The thing I find hilarious about the Ezekiel scene is that Jules ate the mans last meal in front of him, maintaining eye contact the whole damn time! 🤣
New to your channel. When this first came out in the movie theater I went in blind to see this because the movie I wanted to watch was sold out. I was blown away! I think I watched most of the movie with my mouth hanging open lol. I’ve been a Tarantino stan ever since and have watched everything he’s done. Absolutely enjoyed y’alls reactions. New sub. I look forward to more of y’all’s content!
I wish I had been more aware of this movie when it was in theaters, I didn't end up seeing it until 2004, it was in a stack of DVDs in my dad's living room. 😅
Fire Reaction to one of my top ten greatest movies of all time!!! Don’t think you guys picked up on the reason old girl OD’d but if you notice Vincent was shooting heroine, Mia was snorting coke. When she was wearing Vincent’s jacket after winning the dance contest she mistakenly snorted his heroine. Btw… New Sub!!!
Someone may have already answered your question, but I didn't see it, so at 26:26, she says "Vincent Vega". Not Lucifer or whatever else you thought you heard. 🤣
y'alls chemistry with each other and your banter with each other and the movie is excellent. glad to find your channel and sub, keep it up! if you love this Tarantino movie, I suggest watching either Inglorious Bastards, Django Unchained, or Kill Bill (Vol 1 & 2) next!
Nice job putting everything in chronological order and seeing the whole story arc and the details like Wallace being at the apartment with Vincent. A lot of reactors end their videos seeming a little confused still. You guys were sharp with it.
If you haven’t gotten in to many other Tarantino films, may I recommend Jackie Brown, Kill Bill vol 1&2, Django, Inglorious Bastards, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood😊
You didn't know Travolta was a dancer? He dances in every movie he is in. I think it's in his contract. Saturday Night Fever, Grease, Urban Cowboy, Get Shorty, Look Whos Talking, , He even danced in that movie he played an angel in.
You queried about which city it was set in. When they accidentally kill Marvin, SLJ gives a clue by saying "I ain't got no other partners in 818..." which is the area code for the San Fernando Valley.
Well shit...I saw this way back when first released...and many times over the years and I never thought of it the way you said; that the gun on the counter belonging to Marcellus...and he simply left it there while he went for doughnuts, lol. :) Damn that makes sense! You could be right. Learn something new every day, huh ? :) Good catch guys!
Small detail a lot of people miss. Vincent buys heroin which is usually sold in balloons. Lance is out of balloons and sells in in a baggie. This is why Mia assumes it’s cocaine and snorts the heroin.
is it a thriller... it's hard to say what it is... it's pulp fiction. it's like an old pulp fiction novel set to a movie... it's sam spade and johnny dollar... raymond chandler and dashielle hammett... or more currently elmore leonard... it's basically a 1950's pulp fiction dime store novel except it's the year 2000...
Back on the day, crime bosses use to get there friend to take their wife out to have a good time while they were away but it was really to watch the wife for her protection and to make sure no one was cheating with her. The guy they would ask would be a trusted friend and/or worker. Most of the time it worked out because they were to afraid to betray the boss but sometimes it backfired but it was a common practice. And no Vincent wasn't trying to intimidate marvin. Marvin worked for them. He just had the gun in his hands and his finger b the triggerm it was an accident. I agree with the wife about bruce Willis character arc. He good. He ain't gonna be in no mood ish! And it would be hard for me to leave another women getting r@ped even if she was my enemy. And what person would still kill you what you save them from that kind of horror. They could have kept marcellus for DAYS/ WEEKS r@ping him every time they felt a need. I thought that was a, man thing, Bruce saving him.. based on how the husbands take, i guess not. Lol R@pe is easy worse. It's a different kind of death! It's the death of your spirit. It's damage to your soul.
Butch is a professional boxer who is being paid to lose a fight to rig the odds so Marcellus and his crew can bet on him going down in the 5th round. He isn't particularly happy about this but needs the money, Marcellus has just been telling him he has to do it as he has not and will not make it as a top level boxer, basically telling him he's a poor and inept fighter. Vincent calls him punchy and Palooka which are slang words for lousy and inept boxers. Thats why he reacts like that, Butch is the one who scratches Vincents car. Butch doesn't throw the fight instead betting on himself knocking his opponent out in the first round, proving his worth as a boxer and sticking it to Marcellus and Vincent etc and makes money without cheating. He also kills Vincent who has been sent to kill him, Jules has retired thats why Vincent is on his own, well he's actually with Marcellus who is returning from getting coffee for him and Vincent - hence why he is crossing right in front of Butch. Marvin who got shot in the face worked for Marcellus as well, he was the inside man. Before they go in Jules asks how many people and Vince says three, Jules says 'does that include our guy?'. Jules knows Marvin, he introduces him to Vincent.
lol how can you go into pulp fiction not knowing it's quentin tarrantino? ... lol just kidding but i have to laugh! this is his masterpiece. but nearly everything he's made is a masterpiece.
1. This movie has to be the best career defining performance of all time. Samuel L Jackson's has deserved every accomplishment that came after this. 2. Fact: Tarantino wrote the part of Jules with Laurence Fishburne in mind, but he turned it down because it didn't feel like a leading role, and he felt it glorified heroin. 3. I wish Jack Rabbit Slims was real. I don't think restaurants like that can fly these days unless the waiters were dressed as Darth Vader, Ghostbusters, Harry Potter, Master Chief, and Marvel characters, lol. 4. It was during the making of this movie that Tarantino and Uma Thurman came up with the concept of the Bride for Kill Bill. 5. There's a great fan theory that Steve Buscemi (Buddy Holly) is Mr. Pink from Reservoir Dogs who got away with the diamonds, took them to Marcellus Wallace, who gave Mr. Pink a new life and new identity in exchange for the diamonds, and then Mr. Pink ended up working at Jack Rabbit Slims, which calls back to the tipping debate at the start of Reservoir Dogs, and it was the diamonds that was in shiny suitcase. 6. With Tarantino, the details matter. Mia thought she was snorting was cocaine because it was in a bag. Heroin is typically transported in balloons, which Lance the dealer was out of and Vincent was cool with it was in baggie like it was no big deal, but lo and behold, lol. 7. Only Christopher Walken could've told such a bizarre story about the watch and deliver each line so flawlessly. 8. I honestly wonder how hard it was for Tarantino to kill Vincent after everything before. 9. I brought a hoodie version of the Banana Slugs shirt off Redbubble recently
41:21 You can hear about Jack Rabbit slims being robbed the previous night by a couple. Implicating Vincent and Mia loss the dance competition and robbed the place.
Mia said "Vincent Vega" on the mic on the stage. Also, she snorted some potent H which caused the bad reaction. You're not supposed to snort Heroin (so I'm told).
