Holy shit the sound is so full I thought I was listening to a CD quality arrangement! Amazing what you can get out of the system when pushing it to the limits
welp, I don't know how you did it, but you managed to make a already trance-y song even more trance-y AND IN THE SAME HARDWARE TOO AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA you gotta teach me how to make proper trance music too man, this is way too freaking good
Deflemask, official documentation for the yamaha OPL and OPN synths, documentation on the YM2612, it's quirks such as the dummied out voice synth and channel 3 polyphony. years of practice.
Nah, I didn't mean making trance music with just FM synthesis lol, I meant in general I always liked electronic music a lot, and trance was the one genre I liked the most (alongside synthwave anyway), mostly because I always liked listening to Megaman ZX/ZX Advent's soundtrack, which a lot of it is full of trance music because of that, I was always curious on how to even make this kind of music and all the techniques that come with it, but honestly from what I can gather, FM synthesis will definitely be a pretty big part with making this sorta stuff, heh
@@DixieChix I agree this is the best track yet followed by "Solar Modulation" (but this one realy pushes the hardware) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RqWR_RjvNzk.html btw i must look up the game this song belongs to... Edit1: listening to the original this is just a inginius remix. its a totaly different song ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-V0VU_D4Edmk.html
It's good alright. I'm curious if he could make any of the tracks on Rock 'n Roll Racing sound good. They're all good tunes but have poor arrangements on the megadrive version of the game.
@@TheLegendofRenegade Is he the fellow who arranged the RnR super Nintendo tracks? I just looked him up and he's got a lot of SNES tracks to his name. I'm curious, does savage do commission work?
@@rossfurey7101 He does have a Patreon account I'm a supporter of his on there have been for a while now.. I'm not sure if he does requests/commissions though? Might be worth trying to contact him on Patreon
I don't know if you take random requests (or if that's reserved for patrons) but I'd kill for you to cover Outride a Crisis with your FM programming wizardry. I always felt that the composition was incredible, but the instrumentation used back then was pretty weak... and I know _you can fix that._
...aside for the fact that you only have 6 channels, a PCM sample that also uses the sixth FM channel slot, two square notes, and a noise that I can only describe as either like a compressed maraca sample or someone sounding out “F”. Also those aforementioned square notes and “F” coming from an entirely different sound chip that *isn’t FM* (SN7818) Aside for that, yeah, not much limitations.
@@spicybreadproductions1972 idk, I listen to the tf4 ost and know they had channels to spare with that, depends who's hands it's in and the FM sculpting. A friend of mines done some covers for the new sotn demake and holy shit. You're not wrong I just think it's a very capable system. Couple channels off being a dx7
@@spicybreadproductions1972 said noise channel can be used and abused with certain settings to do a lot of things you might not expect. also there's one more pulse channel that can be used instead of said noise channel, or with certain settings alongside said noise channel so long as you're not too bothered with said noise channel having only three very shitty notes in total
Dear God... My favourite song from the game and you made it even more spectacular! Absolutely LOVE this arrangement! :D (Not to mention on the same hardware, too!)
How do you keep getting better and better at this?! Most other remixers decline in quality after some years, but here you are! 4 years plus more and you still have it in you! Better than ever too!
They're the same thing just at different frequencies. I'm specifically pointing out that you can use this technique to create a filter effect like a low pass filter
@@slightlytwistedagain so the LFO can modulate the tone of the carrier? ohh wait i think i get it. you use the LFO to create an envelope for one of the modulators. is that correct?
Yes. As far as I'm aware the Yamaha chip inside the Megadrive has four oscillators per channel. Providing one of those oscillator can go below 20hz you can create a say a low pass filter making the overall sound sound fuller.
I was late into Pulseman (although I bought it like, 8 years ago) but DAMN does this game is crazy good, with some unique stuff going on + a brillant soundtrack on top of that. And it happens that "Stereo Protect" is my fav tune from the game so it's nice to hear this new (and fabulous) arrangement!
So I just bought new headphones and decided to put my sound card to the test on them with this and some other music. Dear god what have I been missing out on? I finally have a decent set of headphones again and I can't describe how much I missed this quality of sound. And this was definitely a good track to use to test it all out too (not just because of how good this rearrange is).
@@squareeyes7386 I think the problem is that the system reserved 2 channels for sound effects so this arrangement isn't really practical for actual gameplay.
jesus youre really pushing Channel 3 with that kick and sine wave. Is that sine still being echoed from 0:40 - 0:53 or is it just a single 2 op sine? also, set custom Playback speed to 0.85x for the 50hz version :P
@@jc_dogen the YM2610 only has 4 FM channels, 4(?) Square/noise channels and 4 sample channels. However, the 2610B which many Taito arcade games used has 6 FM channels. I do believe that SNK were able to artificially increase the number of sample channels later on, closer to the 2000s
If Pulseman had a Sega Mega-CD port but Game Freak didn't want to waste CD space... Sonic Team programmed the past music in Sonic the Hedgehog CD instead of recording it in the studio for that reason, as they ran out of space on the disc while adding the music.
It's a real shame that Sega didn't push for some more features for it's Megadrive sound capabilities. if it had more channels, more wave forms like saw, triangle, square, hell even a single cycle waveform sampler with reverb, delay and distortion effects it would be even more widely respected than the SID chip and most likely widely used today.
But then the machine would have to be more expensive too. I'm just disappointed the SMS' chip is so shit. Imagine the Megadrive could use the NES or Game Boy for additional channels.
A lot of the expenses the console had was making all the additional ports for the addons. Before the Mega CD that port was originally used for a some finance calculator, it's the reason the Motorola chip was gimped in processing power. Sega should have had extra ports where the cartridge slot if they were bothered about base hardware costs as this would have given them more modular capabilities but we all know that at that point in time Sega was more experimental than having any foresight.
Wow just fuckin wow. If you are taking requests..: I suggest you try to do Rock Solid by Robin Beanland from Conker's Bad Fur Day. You are fuckin awesome man.
Y'know what? I know I'm mega fuckin' late to this, but if you look at Game Freak artist's Ken Sugimori's Twitter page... you'll see his handle. Seems he's a SEGA enthusiast. A BIG one. He's got figurines and t-shirts of SEGA merchandise. I hope he gets to hear this, if he hasn't already. I think it'll make him happy. If I had a Twitter page... I'd let him know myself. twitter.com/super_32x
@@Blink_____ it's not really all that hard. it just takes experimentation and paying attention to what each change does to the sound. and from there just a lot of practice, like anything else.
If it were difficult (which I am not doubtful) 80s nd 90s were about using fm synthesis.. Then why did ppl find it difficult to program genny sound hardware? Was it d subpar toolkits or lack of actual knowledge of fm synthesis at bare metal level? Sorry guys so many questions just curious. Just wished my genesis sounded this amazing for every game I played. Tho there are notable scores tht genesis had but few compared to its vast library of games.
