yay so glad it helped! and yes unfortunately if the rugs are different sizes you'd have to make another frame. however, i've been thinking about making a frame that can fit 1 yard of monks cloth and just making multiple rugs within that frame (i've seen a couple other people do it)

A solution to your window issue for larger objects, also so it can be pulled tight when you are tracing for best accuracy, is turning phone flashlight on and letting it sit under the work and the design will show through because of the flashlight. Hope this makes sense and helps you for the future

Thank you for sharing, what a great tutorial! Several years ago when I moved into my first apartment I made a custom outdoor rug and stenciled a pair on Converse on it. But the pattern didn't last long. I would love to try this, but with a simpler template. I think what may also be helpful for the exposed nails is purchasing some really thick felt and cutting strips to the same width and length of the frame. Then attach those on top on the exposed nails for protection while you work.

The carpet tack strips will tear up every thing they come in contact with--including you--if you don't cover them. Also, this is not the stage to settle for pretty good: if it's not square, your rug won't be either. It's not worth it to look at your otherwise beautiful rug forever and always think "Gee, five more minutes to start with and it would have looked so much better".
