Askeladd was not "the dude with Thors" in episode one. He is a new character. You will know the "dude with Thors" when he reappears because he wears a headband and has a guile haircut, and never stops smiling like a maniac.

Valhalla isnt just their version of heaven, it's the collection of all worthy warriors to form an army for ragnarok. Thats why being a contributing member of society will get you respect, but does not qualify you to enter valhalla

the Jomsvikings were a very real thing back in the viking age. They were basically an elite mercenary group and only the best were allowed in! being part of them meant you were a ruthless killer and not to be messed with! they were pretty much the viking ages special forces, but just up for hire!

To be fair, the way it's mentioned and then future episodes make it a little confusing and unsure. It's somewhat ambiguously worded in the first episode, and we know simply being jomsviking doesn't mean they can't fight against each other.
@curkinho
@curkinho Год назад
@@robertcampbell8070 that's a good point, since they are kind of elite mercenaries, but mercenaries after all, i'm not sure how that works tho (I read the manga but i don't remember that)

The big blonde guy who was fighting with Thors in episode 1 is named Thorkell the Tall. You won't be seeing him again for a while, but he's one of my favourite characters. Also, much like Speedwagon, he is considered by some to be best girl, because, "Sometimes it takes a real man to become best girl." - Gigguk 2020.

Valhalla isn't a perfect analogue to heaven. Every soul that goes there is basically a soldier conscripted into Odin's army to fight at the end of the world, which is why only warriors go there. So non-warriors like Helga and Ylva probably wouldn't get in. They COULD maybe get into Folkvangr, but I'm not super familiar with the criteria for that afterlife, it seems kinda vague.
@MajorSmurf
@MajorSmurf Год назад
Folkvangr from what I know is a place where half of the warriors not chosen by Odin go. From what I've read the only criteria is proving yourself in combat to get into either place. I guess the way I think about is that Valhalla is a place for the heroes and amazing warriors while the average one gets into Folkvangr. Whether this is true or not I don't know.
@Pragabond
@Pragabond 8 месяцев назад
There's also in general a bunch of afterlifes in general you can end up in not just Valhalla as the end all be all. There's even an afterlife for drowning (maybe specifically at sea not sure) although I don't think that one is fun. There seems to be a lot less morality to the afterlifes at least.

I think you misinterpreted Floki in the first episode. He and Thors were always on the same side
@davidhasselblad2898
@davidhasselblad2898 Год назад
Historically Floki was a sneaky, tricky f, but he was smart, clever, a strategist and strong. The culture was very rough because they kinda had to be. The nature of their homeland was always so cold and icy that growing harvests didn't always go that well. Many starved many froze. So the Viking or those who went Vikingr, were necessary for survival, they would take back animals, furs for warmth, seeds, treasure to trade in Europe for food for winters wine and such.

So in Norse culture Friday night/ Saturday is the holy day, so you would take a bath Saturday morning before praying to the gods and then doing chores. Midssomer starts on the closest Friday to the summer solstice and ends on Sunday night, the yule festival starts on the closest Friday to the winter solstice and ends Sunday night... This year the pagan yule festival and Christmas fell on the same days.

Asgard has several halls. Every asir has their own that someone can go to after death. Hel has the most halls, but only a few are considered bad, meant for bad people. The rest of her halls are actually pretty nice and not bad afterlife's.

As far as I'm aware either sex could potentially get to go to Valhalla but it's very likely to mainly men due to them being the only ones being allowed to go war and raids. Shield Maidens are a very very debated topic and if they did exist we don't yet have enough evidence to prove it. Some might state the grave of a woman found with a shield and sword is proof of one but this is more than likely a custom of Viking burial and doesn't prove she was a warrior. Saying this women in Viking culture had to often defend themselves from invaders while the men went off raiding/war so they likely took part in combat. Valhalla is the place of heroes and warriors who will serve and fight by Odin's side during Ragnorak and so if a woman did something in combat to earn her place than yeah it's possible. The warriors in Valhalla are referred to as the Einherjar. Of course Valhalla isn't the only place where fallen warriors go. The other half not chosen by Odin will go to Folkvnagr which is controlled by Frey's twin sister Freyja. Folkvangr is described as a golden field for warriors. Freyja is an important Goddess in Norse culture representing beauty, sex, fertility, love, war, gold and magic.

Thors was a commander in floki's army and an officer of the jommsviking in the war he abandoned in the first episode. The blonde guy he was talking to in the first episode was a fellow commander.

My interpretation has always been he grabbed the knife because he wanted to show to Thorfinn that this is a weapon its for hurting people and to give him the jarring experience of his father being hurt by it. To make him understand what a weapon can do to the people he uses it on. It WAS a lot to convey that but I think Thors was also worried he might not come back (boy was he right). That he may never ever get to teach his son the most important thing he ever learned in his life if he didn't do it now. So he had to leave an impression and give him an experience that he'll remember so those words are always there for him to consider. Your ass is gonna remember the time your dad GRABBED A DAGGER and lectured you.

Valhalla is specifically for the best warriors. There's another place for warriors who died honorably but weren't the best of the best. Pretty much every life and death state has it's own afterlife with various requirements to enter. (i.e. those who die of sickness or old age go to Hel). Women of noble blood who are lovers or relatives of people chosen for Valhalla often become Valkyries who in addition to serving as heralds during Ragnarok, and collecting the souls of the valiant dead for Odin to judge, also handle the cooking, cleaning and serving, at the Valhalla festhalls when there's nothing more official to do.

there are a lot of afterlife's in Norse myth people that die in battle go to either Valhalla or Frøyas folkvang, people who drown go to Rans hall. people who die a farmer or a slave go to Gimle/thors Trudvang but only those that stand out?. married women go to Gjevjons hall. some that die stay in there graves. betrayers and murderers go to the Nastranda in Nivlheim. but most people go to hel or helheim where everything is in a perpetual winter

The problem with maps is that we're not actually sure where some of the locations were, because they don't exist any more. For example Jomsborg, the supposed home of the Jomsvikings, might even be completely legendary. The best historians can guess at is that Jomsborg was somewhere in what's now modern day Poland.

Valhalla isn't like any heaven exactly, it's Odin's reward to warriors who fight and die in battle without fear. And the Valkyries take the worth souls of the fallen to Valhalla so that they may feast and fight to their heart's content forever. And the norse version of hell (Hel) isn't fire and brimstone, it's cold misty darkness. This is a highly reductive look at Valhalla, there is obviously stuff that I omitted for brevity and simplicity sake.

First, nope that's not the big guy jumping around with Thors in Ep 1 killing people. No worries, it'll be clear soon. Secondly.... That village scene with Thors and Floki was TENSE. The king and the jomsvikings are going to war, which means they either need resources (i.e pillaging) or bodies (conscripts or slaves). That's what Floki meant about not returning empty-haneded. So while all the young men in the peaceful village are all excited about going to war and dreaming of glory, the actual trained warriors are quietly spreading themselves throughout the whole place and waiting in position for action.

This is my first time watching as well and in reference to the viking facts i made in the last video i'm surprised how accurate the Norse culture is depicted such as the bathing on Saturday and the conflict with England. the only depiction of a viking in anime i can think of off the top of my head is Beowulf in fate grand order so seeing viking culture depicted accurately is quite a good sight to see.

They're vikings. War was a very big part of that culture. And about the "different values when it comes to death"; you're completely right. In fact, vikings didn't just not fear death, but they practically looked forward to dying on the battlefield so they could be chosen by Oden and his valkyries and taken to Valhall.

Viking Culture is a lot more harsher then we are used to, as it was an more harsh time then, also it is more common for young boys and adults to be excited for wars and killing, As most believed in going to Valhalla if they died as warriors. Also Also.. Askeladd is Best Character after Thors, He got an great personality. I also don't like Thorfinn's Character.. won't spoil anything, I just don't like how they handled him.

No, Ragnarok isn't the end of all time. The Ragnarok is the end of the old world and a new world will born after Ragnarok. The nords believed that the whole world is in a constant cycle of rebirth and destruction. So eventually a new Ragnarok will come that will destroy the new world. Also Ygdrasil the World Tree is believed to be the only eternal thing that exists, so it won't be destroyed, even during the Ragnarok.
