Putting Jen To Work - Honda 1.7L Piston Rings

My girl said she would do all the work if I helped her put new piston rings in her Civic. Since I already had the head off for a blown gasket, I said OK. Looking back it seems I may have put her through some torture. haha. She asked for it though! Months later, the car still runs like a top and she's very happy to have learned about the way her engine functions. No more overheating or burning oil.

Working at a professional independent shop I’ve noticed I’ve gotten lazy and pampered because of lifts, so when I do some jobs at my garage at home, since I don’t have lifts and have to be under vehicles I complain about being on the ground.
@mrmotofy
@mrmotofy 2 года назад
@@gabrielfranco9786 Had a lift about 10 yrs or so now. Recently had to do a quick brake job on a truck. Had a trailer connected to it and another truck in the lift bay. Man that's a lotta hassle just to throw some rotors and pads on. Move and unhook trailer, move truck out, pull truck in and lift it, then reverse it all...I'd be about done with the brakes by that time. Well turned into a bit more of a hassle brake job in the driveway but got it done...ah yes the good ole days...I don't really miss it at all haha

Came for the eye candy. Stayed for the enjoyable learning lesson for her and her dedication to getting dirty and helping out. Is it done in a clean engine assembly room, no, but it's done a lot better than some people have done and I'm sure it will last long enough for the life of the car. Good example of a BIG project. That probably only cost a couple hundred in parts but tons of labor and a big result when finished. I really enjoyed. And kudos to the lady for helping out!

Mechanic for 55yrs. Nice to see a "Backyard" rebuild anymore. You can fix any light duty engine back to 99% for less than 1/10th the money of a "rebuilt" if you do it right. A few tips if I may: If I reuse pistons, I have them knurled. I never hone the cylinders unless I bore them. I simply put it back together with new rings. They will seat in very quickly and you don't lose as much ring end gap in the seating in process. But if you insist on honing, lube the stones w/ veg oil. Then use detergent and HOT water to get the grit off the cyl walls. Then use 10 thousandths oversize rings and file them to fit. 3 - 4 thou for every inch of bore. If you reuse the bearing inserts, buy a brand new flat sharpening stone and "hone" off 1 or 2 "ten thousandths" from the cap and rod big end to get some of the crush back. Wash the bearings inside and out and the rod cap and rod big end with Brake Parts Cleaner to remove all traces of lube. You can reuse the head bolts too if they torque up OK. Just watch how many degrees it takes to reach each step of the 3 or 4 step torque sequence. If one gets there too soon or starts to go to far, stop and replace it. And be sure to coat the entire bolt with moly lube or dip the entire bolt into oil for accurate torqueing. To reuse rod bolts and nuts, clean w/ brake clean & use "High Heat" thread locker ie: Loctite 263. I reuse any gasket that doesn't seal oil or coolant under pressure by smearing a thin film of Room Temp Vulcanizing (RTV) silicone on the surface after cleaning with brake cleaner. Honda makes a good one called Hondabond or use "Black" RTV, but use it SPARINGLY. Great video. ben/ michigan

What works really well for cleaning the cylinders after honing is hot water mixed with Tide washing detergent. It works better at carrying the grit away where brake/carb cleaner moves the grit around instead of carrying it away. I would always use a white paper towel in the cylinder to see if any grey grit(metal) showed up on it before reinstalling the pistons. Good re-ring job well done.

Awesome video. Have to do this job soon on an 05 Civic so great timing. I just gotta say though on first start ups I like to pull the fuel pump fuse and crank it over without starting. Just to circulate some oil before actually starting it
@NoNonsenseKnowHow
@NoNonsenseKnowHow 3 года назад
Thanks man. And I don't think I would agree with pulling the fuel pump fuse and cranking the engine. It's not going to build up oil pressure and will cause the assembly Lube to be squeezed out between metal surfaces. Honestly either way is completely fine in my opinion. Now if it was something like a small block Ford then I would Prime the engine with a drill. Can't do that on the Honda though. Or high-end Vehicles and airplanes actually have an electronic auxiliary oil pump to prime before every start.

@@NoNonsenseKnowHow Hmm never thought of it that way. I always just assumed that it built up enough oil pressure to make its way into the head/valvetrain, but maybe it's just a waste of time lol. Anyways, enjoying your videos!

@@bradmacdowell6583 Yea I mean either way is fine when working on a Honda. These things are tough as nails. Minus the crappy head gaskets on some. And cool, I appreciate you checking the vids out. Thanks man

Reminds me how spoiled I am having a lift at home. I still have to do all the big diesel inframes on the ground though, great stuff keep up the awesome videos. I'd try making videos but It'd be a second full time job editing out all the cursing and bad singing I do, lol.

Yeah I wish I had a lift. Maybe one of these days! I've pretty much out grown my property so I need to get a different place first. And thanks for your feedback on the videos. I'll keep going as long as I hold on to the motivation. You should give it a go if you have the desire. Definitely takes a lot of time though and makes Jobs go slower

Gotta find out what would motivate her...Trade 1 month of a housecleaning chore or something. Or take her on a getaway weekend...start with something then maybe she might realize it's not that bad. I recently got my daughter working on a project. Got into it a bit and showed her how easy and convenient Simple Green is to clean her hands after she refuses gloves. See get dirty...just clean up. Now she says she's gonna get some to clean up

wow! , so you were able to do all this without removing the crankshaft girdle? to get to the connecting rod caps.. i didn't think that was possible, but i will definitely do this for my 93 civic... thanks...its great that the engine does not have to be removed from the car on these Hondas also..
