Step by step construction of a 14 x 42 foot temporary greenhouse structure using PVC piping and recycled materials investment about $300 and 14 Man Hours of work. If you are considering a structure to start your vegetables in late winter, consider a PVC Greenhouse to get a jump on Spring!

Great job, something to think about, install two layers of poly and use a bathroom fan to inflat between the two sheets. This will prevent the wind flapping and chewing up the plastic. Mine was still in great shape after four years when we sold the farm.

I love this. We have a wooden greenhouse on a platform because of flooding, but I have been asking my husband for a hoop house over our existing garden, about the same size as yours. We have it sectioned off with Post Poles and seven foot fencing. This structure would fit right over the top of the existing garden without having to remove anything. Thanks for this.

That's very well done, and an excellent video presentation. I have read that PE sheeting will react with PVC and fall apart, but if you skin the PVC/PE contact area with fabric tape it is not a problem (there is a special tape sold for this).

Thank you for the video. A great way to start a greenhouse. For those who feel the video could have been more stable or flipped to accommodate the view, the message was how to build a greenhouse, not the best way to video building a greenhouse. A nice transparent greenhouse is pretty, but what most people don't understand is that you can keep it warmer in winter by covering the non-sun sides with aluminized poly or reflective insulation blankets. You can't get sun heat in from the north and most of the east and west sides anyway in winter. Just the south side and half of the top on the south side will contribute solar heat. The reflective insulation will greatly increase your warming inside, and prevent loss at night.Similarly covering the sun side also just at night is even better, with a roll-up aluminized insulative blanket or tarp.

I dig the idear...for clarity, are you perhaps referring to one of those metallic fold-up "blankets" that emergency-minded people keep in their cars? They come packaged all folded neatly in a probably 4"x6" packet? If not, could you give me a description that my rookie self would be able to take to one of the Home stores and find? Many thanks in advance.
@rstevewarmorycom

They have numerous aluminized material, rigid as well as sheet-like. If you were desperate you could use aluminum foil and white glue. But most of the insulation sheets they sell also come aluminized.

My experience with PVC-supported plastic structure is you must absolutely remove the sheeting before first snow in winter, or the weight of the snow has no problem snapping off the PVC. But it is a decent setup for the money and pretty easy to build.

If you drill tiny pinholes in the underside of the arches you could connect a hose to the main center piece of PVC & you could then water all the plants inside whenever needed.
@julisagonzalez657
@julisagonzalez657 3 года назад
You shouldn’t water veggie plants from above.. causes disease form water on their leaves especially in a green house where it’s more humid and gets no wind..
@dans381
@dans381 3 года назад
@@julisagonzalez657 That's good to know, thanks, I didn't realize that. Then instead of pinholes like a sprinkler system you could still use the frame to deliver the water but tap into it with small drip tubes from the frame down to each of the plants base.
@ronmiller7248
@ronmiller7248 3 года назад
@@dans381 ok so you're saying water tubes inside his pvc will not freeze? Is that it?
@dans381
@dans381 3 года назад
@@ronmiller7248 I was not saying anything about water freezing, water would freeze if it gets cold enough.... I was just pointing out a simple way to pipe water throughout the greenhouse. You wouldn't need to put water tubes inside the frame, the frame would become the tubes.The entire frame is all connected (& hollow) so by attaching a water supply to one point of the frame, then the frame itself can be the water tubes & carry the water to any point you need.

So, I actually built my greenhouse (60'x12') by this design. I think it is almost a good design and worked pretty well for the first month. One of the problems I came up against was in the pvc joints being weak points in the structure. Wind the other day was between 20-30 mph and that busted three joints, and that's not even very windy for this area(Helena, MT). However, I plan to replace any broken joints with single poles of pvc 20' long and run them through the cross joints. Not a bad design and fairly cheap, just needs some work.

I really liked the 2 x8 boards at the foot with the clamps. I was going to build a very similar structure only with end caps at the bottom sides. I had also planned on using strips of plywood attached to the outside of the PVC with bailing wire as I was told PVC and poly didn't work well together. Did yours work out well in that regard and did you use schedule 10 or 40 pvc. The reason I wanted end caps was for so I could attach a hose, timer and misting heads for times when I need water. Great video Nick. Thank you.

dont record video in vertical camer mode, its hard to watch and the field of view is way smaller.always shoot video in wide angle horizontal. vertical is only for photos. thanks for the info in this video.

Yes, good advise! it is always annoying trying to watch a video like that. Causes many viewers to just leave also so lose the hit on the video. I am a person Who normally would just leave soon as I see that dumb camera mode! Only reason I did watch this video is because I plan to build a similar greenhouse very soon and never hurts to look for tips and tricks to do a better job. Good video other than camera mode, though nothing new to me I did not already know. I would also guess reason for so many thumbs down was for the camera mode as I thought the video was pretty good otherwise.

Yes, great video and thank you so much for doing it. I agree that it would have been much easier to watch if you had held the camera the right way though! Many people will be put off because of this and not bother watching it which is a shame after all your hard work.

Was that regular 6mil visqueen? If the entire project was under 300 dollars and it was greenhouse film I need to know where you got it? :) Before I purchased the commercial greenhouse that I now have (it's 30'X100') I built something similar to this one (it was12'X24'). The 12X24 was covered with regular 6mil visqueen and that plastic became brittle in about 6 months and basically shattered. You need greenhouse film if you want it to last more than a year. It's not cheap but well worth the investment if you want to do this long term. I subbed your channel and hope to see more from you greenhouse in the future as I tend to mine. Chuck

It was 4 mil poly I believe - not "greenhouse" grade...we were doing this as cheaply as possible and did not count the cost of the wood framing or ends - as we had this as recycled materials. I agree on the higher-grade greenhouse film, especially for zone 4 gardening...thanks for the input
@FensterfarmGreenhouse

Are you still growing in it? Chuck
@llgardens
@llgardens 9 лет назад
Fensterfarm Greenhouse no, it is not up during the winter. as soon as weather permits (after last frost) - the poly was taken down and it is used as a more traditional garden...

not greenhouse grade means that it is not food grade. you are putting toxings in your other wise healthy food. @fensterfarm greenhouse look for ldpe plastic or "growplastics" yes its more expensive then pet , but it last longer and has no "known" release of harmfull toxins, you stil have a 6 f by 30f for 15 bucks

Nick Tamble Have you considered instead of popping the pvc over droppers, to rather close it off at the bottom with additional pipe and t-pieces to create one seamless structure. Then drill small holes in strategic places and use the frame as an irrigation system?
