You should always hold the glue joint for a couple seconds after pushing it into the fitting as the expansion of the glue tends to force the pipe back out of the fitting. This can be seen when he fits the pipe into the valve at the return.

Excellent! One recommendation, when it comes time to replace the in-line valves, consider using a gate valve. From my experience, the PVC valves are ‘harder’ to open and close and put stress on the surrounding PVC connections. Over time, the stress can cause failure and leaks to the surrounding connections. Gate valves open and close much easier, causing little to no stress to the surrounding connections.
@EmpoweringDIYFamily
@EmpoweringDIYFamily 3 года назад
I would much rather use a gate valve than a ball valve. But for some reason around here they are twice as much! I know because it’s worth it. Burt not budget friendly. I try to work the valves every so often so they don’t get to stiff but they still do over time. I definitely need to spend the extra money next time. Thanks for the tip.

I thought you had to use CPVC with chlorine so it won’t deteriorate. That looks like PVC. I’m getting ready to build some power washing components . They use bleach/pool shock so I’m trying to learn.

Overall, not bad. I'll give you some comments here on what I consider "the good", "the bad", and "the ugly". First, the good: hats off to using the double-45 instead of a 90 going from the skimmer to the pump. I don't know if you picked this up on RU-vid or if they told you this at the store where you picked up the PVC, but for those that don't know...every 90 degree joint is the equivalent of adding 10 feet of pipe. It is a huge flow restriction. Using a double-45 is preferred, but if you must use a 90 you should use what's called a "long sweep" one. Another one for the "good" list is that you properly turned the pipe when cementing them, to get better coverage on the seal. Lastly, good job on proper use of unions, in case anything needs to be serviced in the future, for easy removal. Next, the bad: there's actually a number of issues here. Though you did turn the pipes when cementing, you aren't holding them long enough. You need to hold them for at least 20 seconds, though about 45 seconds is ideal. The chemical reaction when bonding PVC causes them to push away from each other. You can actually clearly see this happening at about 13:15 when connecting the pipe into the valve, as it pushes out while you're looking at it. That's almost certainly going to leak, if not outright fail, within a year or so. Another big problem is that you're cutting pipe with a recip saw...on other pipe, and not braced. This is not only risky to damage the pipe below where you are cutting, but puts an enormous amount of stress on the other joints in the line (in this case, the connection going to the pool, after the valve). If you have to cut in place, have somebody hold the pipe tightly against them (a safe distance from the saw), to reduce vibration and keep the pipe from banging around near the end of the cut. Lastly, not only did you not do a very good job of de-burring the cut from the recip saw, but you actually forgot to put primer and cement on the pipe side of the union, seen at around 14:45. Lastly, the ugly: do you have your backwash line just pointed straight down, only a couple inches from the sand filter? Or is that just not finished yet? You will be back-washing not just dirty water directly next to your setup; but if you have to drain the pool to winterize it where you live (I don't know where that is), then you will be dumping potentially 1000+ gallons of water directly next to your pump/filter setup. That volume of water is going to weaken the soil under your concrete pads, and cause the ground to shift. That shift will put stress on the PVC joints, and will be another potential point of failure in the future. You need to plumb that correctly, to divert the back-wash away from the area properly. Just my thoughts...

We are in the market for our first above ground pool. I enjoyed your video for the PVC plumbing of your pump and filter. GREAT JOB! Did you choose the pump and filter system yourself (as an upgrade to what would’ve come with the pool)? We are looking at a 24x52. What size is your pump? Also, is it a salt system?
@EmpoweringDIYFamily
@EmpoweringDIYFamily 3 года назад
My pump and filter came from the pool stood as a package with my pool. I can’t remember what size it is right now. I wish it was salt! One day I will convert it but for now I’m ok with chlorine. Thanks for watching. Any more questions feel free to ask!

Is there a major benefit to installing this PVC system compared to just utilizing the soft pool hose and hose clamps that originally came with the filter system? I've only had my above ground pool for one season, but I don't find that my pool hoses leak at all, so I'm wondering why I should consider the added expense and labor of switching to PVC. Asking sincerely because I don't know. Thank you.
@EmpoweringDIYFamily
@EmpoweringDIYFamily 2 года назад
I did it because I was having problems with leaks. And the flex hoses just dont seem to last. If you have to replace them every couple of years the PVC would pay for itself in just a couple years. PVC was relatively cheap when I did this project. Now in 2022 prices have skyrocketed so maybe it isnt cost effective. But the prices for the flex hoses may have gone up too. I havent priced them recently. If your not having issues now Id wait until you start having issues or notice the flex hoses getting brittle and replace them before a failure.

Don't use a saw to cut your pipes use a pvc cutter. Also what do you do during the winter. Leave everything hooked up or cut it off so you can put it up
@cavyboy99
@cavyboy99 Год назад
You can also use a wine bottle cork to plug that return in the pool if you don't have the plug. That's what I use
@EmpoweringDIYFamily
@EmpoweringDIYFamily Год назад
I have pvc cutters but not for that size. Couldn't warrant the 80 bucks for cutters that size for one project. I've never had issues using a hack saw for that. Just takes an extra minute to clean off the burrs. I leave everything hooked up but drain everything and lower the pool water level just below the skimmer.

Do you have any issues with your inline chlorinator reducing the output flow back to the return jet? Is that the 4lb or 9lb model?

Can you let me know what did you do to get the skimmer back to 1.5 inch pipe. This is my problem. I need to know what to use from the skimmer and jet to get back to the pipe. Please send the name of the pieces you used for the start of this.

can connect a 1 1/2 Inlet Return Fitting through the pool wall - then use a 1 1/2" Schedule 40 PVC Male Adaptor MPT X Socket that connects the threads to the inlet.. for the skimmer, if its different size, probably a bushing, or adapter if same size

Sure but every pool will be different. What I used was all 1 1/2” pvc. 4- thread to slip fittings 2- 45 degree elbows. You can use 90’s but I feel the 45’s allow for better flow if you were to get leaves or anything in there. 2- ball valves 2- unions Pipe glue and primer And I bought 1 10ft 1 1/2 pvc which was plenty for me.

You never showed us your trick to not have the water from the pool coming out when you cut the pipe. What did you do?
@EmpoweringDIYFamily
@EmpoweringDIYFamily 4 года назад
For the skimmer I used that valve that was threaded on one side and screwed it into the inside of the skimmer. The jet side. I removed the jet from the inside of the pool. Mine just unscrews and its two pieces. The outer ring, and the jet. I call it the Eyeball. LOL I taped the "Eyeball" up with electrical tape to cover the hole and then put it back together. The tape stopped the water from leaking back through the pipe. It wasn't a perfect seal but it did the trick. If this didn't make sense I can make a quick short video on what I did if you want. Thanks for watching!
@robertsnider5505
@robertsnider5505 3 года назад
Amy, the easiest trick to block the return flow temporarily is to use a piece of thin plastic. It could be a candy wrapper or used plastic bag. Simply unscrew the jet ring, remove the ‘eye ball’ (Set it to the side), place the plastic flat over the hole and screw the jet ring back on. When done, unscrew the ring, remove the plastic, replace the ‘eye ball’ and screw the jet ring back on.
