It's going to split the community and all the PVE people are going to get bored and leave forever after they've maxed out all that they're allowed to on their safe servers and if they do venture into the regular C's, they're going to get absolutely destroyed by people who've been doing nothing but fighting each other the entire time. This could very well kill the game and it's funny because they've spent years saying that we would never get PVE servers and now they've finally caved to the mob. Which makes me think that they might have been desperate to pull this move

@@Navy6438 trust me, you're not missing much the way hourglass is. PVP does have its fun aspects. The only thing I'll going to safer seas for will mostly be the achievements on release. I like the interactions with other players. I'm the kind of person who might show up on your ship and just start driving it around because you weren't paying attention. I also am willing to alliance with others and help new players. Just last night we 2 manned a gally. At the beginning of the session I swam over to another player's ship and started sailing it around the island because he was AFK. He decided it was a bright idea to attack us when we finally got one of the crew mates we were waiting for and were getting ready to portal into the tale. Needless to say, he sunk. At the end of the session we were looking for someone to mess with. When we finally found someone, we struck. They would have sunk if it wasn't for me bailing a few times to give me time to put their ship where I wanted it and my crewmate repairing. Then we chased them for a while laughing at how afraid they were of a 2 man gally. We finally got them into a party and decided to do some TDMs. We also found out that one of them was a new player, so we made him TDM so he could get some actual PVP practice and advice as a requirement for them to get the little bit of random loot and supplies we had acquired. The point is that it's the interactions that are important, not necessarily pvp/no pvp. You don't necessarily have to sink anyone to steal treasure or supplies either. My problem is not with pvp itself but the fact that we have so many players right now wanting to be pvp lords that they miss out on the rest of the possibilities within the gambit of interactions.

@@t2comicbooksoverviews251 No, 30% is the perfect amount; enough for a player to get a taste. They are going to find a shiny cosmetic they want, grind for a bit in Safer Seas, and then one of two things will happen. They will get frustrated, switch to high seas for more gold, get wrecked, and quit (which they would have done anyway, so Safer Seas changes nothing), or they get wrecked, go back to Safer Seas, practice naval and boarding combat on some Skeleton ships, grind a little more for that cosmetic, and come back to the High Seas ready for a fight. Not as an unbeatable sweatlord, but as a practiced player with realistic expectations; something that does not happen currently. 100% Progression IS what would make PvE servers a bad thing. Yeah, if they go off playing on their own without me there to teach them 'how to play properly' then they won't get the full game experience." These are the people with millions in gold, bought ever cosmetic that they want in the game, have all the stuff unlocked that they could ever want, and nothing better to do than prey on people that honestly just don't want to spend all of their time fighting. They seem to forget that when they started playing 5 years ago, the seas weren't full of manhunters on every horizon, it was full of players that were all trying to figure out the game and explore, and do the most basic parts of the game. They didn't have to deal with tryhards, and sweats every second of their playtime, most of the people they did come across were asking for help with a task, not there just to kill them for being in the game.

It's funny how the idea of finally allowing every player to be able to pick and choose how they want to play the game is seen as the end of the game entirely. Rare is finally upholding the promise they made in the trailer of the game over 5 years ago, "you will be able to play the game in your own way." Up until Safer Sea's there hasn't been a way to play the game how you wish unless you wish to constantly be hunted down. Sails are easy to be spotted from miles away, thus you can never go unnoticed no matter what you do. When my friends and I were playing we would just quit out and relog into a new server and start all over again... constantly. So yeah, we quit playing. "That's so incredibly toxic" I hear all the time, and I'm not going to reward players that are actively going out of their way to ruin my time. I don't care about your enjoyment of the game because you clearly don't care about mine. The most insulting thing about this whole issue is the justification of the extremely toxic behavior of the vast majority of the SoT community is "It's a pirate game". Because history tells us that pirates only ever hunted down other pirates in cold blood and nothing else, right? They didn't form their own capital cities, and controlled vast areas of the seas in which other nations paid them tolls for safe passage. No Pirate ever offered aid to his fellow sailors in need, or split rewards after joining forces. Every moron defending their actions of PVP with the brainless announcement of It'S a PiRaTe GaMe probably can't read and is only able to spend all day playing SoT because they have nothing else to offer to the rest of humanity. If you are part of the opinion that "people just wanting to play a game and nothing more offends me", then you are the one that doesn't need to be playing this game. Because if you are so full of hatred that you feel that you NEED to make everyone else just as miserable as you, then you don't deserve to even be a part of this game.

PVE servers mean I will come back and actually play the content.

I'm on the opposite side in that I hope this eventually just turns into full PVE servers. I don't play for PVP or to try and buddy up with people (beyond ALWAYS having an Alliance flag up) and I never will. I just like sailing the ship, the mechanics, the atmosphere, and going around doing missions and enjoying the skelly/ghost ship/kraken battles that I come upon. I always have SoT installed because I really like that part of it, but inevitably it is ruined by a full galleon swinging by and sinking my ship when I'm on an island, or chasing me across the map. If, as you say, there are lots of people who like the thrill of high seas, then why are you worried that there might eventually be a place for people who aren't interested in that? If Safer Seas removes people who don't want to do PVP thus making the PVP more active on your servers, why not just let them stay in their own safe little world forever? Your argument is either that this will encourage people to PVP, which it certainly won't for me, or that you NEED shitty PVPers to pick on in order for YOU to have fun. I am well beyond the lvl 40 mark so Safer Seas means nothing to me, and therefore I won't be back for S10. It didn't encourage me to go "get good", I just simply am not going to be playing. And that is fine, not every game needs to be for everyone. I can already see the replies to this saying "this game isn't for you then" but they will for sure be meaner. Most of my friends who were frequent players have given up and moved on to other things because of this. There's no reason Rare can't have all these customers back if they provide servers where players who don't want to be attacked can play with out that fear. For the life of me, I cant remember Rare ever saying they will never add a private server option. I recall them saying that they don't plan to. Plans change and in my opinion this is for the better. Anyone else remember when games were mostly single player and co-op? Shortly thereafter the "play online" options for games emerged and then took over many games entirely. Personally, I think that the best games have all three options of gameplay. Solo, co-op and online. Give me options and time and I will eventually play all three modes fairly often. This update will allow me to play this game with friends and family who would otherwise have little to no interest in playing this game for the sake of no-life losers who log on to bother, annoy or otherwise harass anyone they can. I have no problem with a good fight but when you get someone who abuses mechanics, outright cheats, endlessly hunts you down (even if they always end up sinking) or screeches toxic bile at anyone and everyone just because they can, it makes most decent and normal people just looking for a good time stop and consider finding a different game, like you mentioned.

Honestly I've always wanted pve servers, or private servers, or something along those lines. Elite Dangerous is a game I always mention when it comes to Sea of Thieves, that game has solo play, it has private servers you can create but also the public option, SoT needs these options. My only real problem is stuff like limiting what we can do, I still wanna be able to access Reapers and Athena if I wanted to, or do stuff relating to emissary flags. I don't really see the need for a reduction and limits on this stuff, because if it stayed the same as public servers people would still play the game and Rare would still get their money. They'd even get the public pvp players who only ever want to do pvp. Which is why I've been wanting this for so long, because I hate having to flee from ships when I literally have no loot, I tell them I don't have any and they still proceed to chase me, I've had multiple occasions where I've led them to the red sea so their ship gets destroyed, downside is mine does too, but sometimes people just want to relax and be left alone in peace, it's really not too much to ask for.

A lot of people seem to be joining this discussion out of emotional reason as opposed to constructively with numbers. If you look at steam charts, the game has never had lower player numbers in its entire lifespan. Bungie, the creators of Destiny did a survey where they tested to see how many people did the Raids in-game, the equivalent in SoT would be a FOF, FOTD and Ashen Winds. It's extremely common... or so you'd think. Turned out only around 11% of their entire player base had EVER completed a raid, not just recently but EVER. It may be stats from a third-party website or a different game but if even half of it is true, that would suggest the LARGE majority of people who play games with exploration and story, do not enjoy competitive / challenging content or have no interest in it. *PVP or PVE isn't the debate we should be having, it's whether or not the game needs casual players to survive, and whether those casual players would enjoy SoT as it is.* Edit: Spelling.

At first I wanted to grind money, to be able to buy my first ship and a couple of cosmetics I liked the most. Then money became less important to me but I still was afraid of getting sunk because I wanted to level up the trading companies and become the pirate legend. And after that the game became pretty chill to me. Now my main goal is getting emissary rewards each month, so it still sucks when I sink and lose loot, but I care much less about it than I did a month or two ago. So yeah, the perspective can change very fast when you reach certain milestones. And I think the idea for safer seas is great the way it is now. I'm a player who'd love to play on PvE servers and mind my business in peace, but I won't use them, I'll still play on the high seas. Without my own captained ship that I've grown quite attached to and without emissaries, I just don't want to be there with my current priorities in game. But I would love to have such an option earlier, so I think many new players will benefit from it. As for me, maybe I'll use the safe seas to get that gold curse, but I can't see myself going there for any other reason.

My only fear is that as Phuzzy put it, Rare has a tendency of going all in the moment something seems to be even slightly working (pirates life being a prime example), and that eventually the restrictions on safer seas will be either removed entirely, or reduced to the point of not being an issue. Although captaincy being High Seas exlusive doesn't really make sense to me. There are no PvP related milestones in the game. Nothing actually tracks your progress for how many players you have killed or ships you have sunk (besides hourglass), so I don't see why captaincy can't be in Safer Seas given it's already an entirely PvE feature anyway.

I am a casual as you put it, one question: how do you progress if the whole time you are playing you struggle to keep from getting sunk? You can’t. You spend all your time trying to stay afloat. I've been playing SoT for many years now and love this game and all its aspects. A PvE mode doesn't hurt the game. Because who doesn't know that after a stressful day at work when their crew doesn't have any time, they just want to set sail for an hour or two to relax a little. Then encountering a crew while you are e.g. Simply fishing for fish somewhere and enjoying the ambience is, in 90% of all cases, anything but relaxing. The high seas can and will only benefit from a PvE mode.

I think they may have missed a chance to make a very fun PVE mode. It would be cool to see a sort of heat meeter build up that would drop when you go to a port. The more gold you stash on your ship and enemies you kill the higher the heat rises for more profit. I imagine around max heat around 10 or 11 it would give you completely unfair enemies to fight. It could also be a good opportunity to recontextualize death and have it be a severe punishment where you lose everything. Just my thoughts but I am glad I can now do story stuff and fishing without looking over my shoulder every two seconds. There is a lot to appreciate and enjoy in SOT that's not PVP focused

I think that's a cool idea, but I also see it being abused more heavily than any other feature. Getting rewarded for accompanying a ship would be a money glitch basically, especially if you meet people willing to participate in abusing it. This is also not mentioning abusing the flag as skilled players to lure others into a fight they probably won't win. What I can imagine tho, is the flag being only available to players that haven't reached a certain milestone, like having less than 100 levels in factions combined, something along those lines. It surely can still be abused with new accounts etc, but this would balance it way better I believe
@ulfurvojn6893
@ulfurvojn6893 Год назад
Really interesting idea! To prevent abuse I think they could make the rewards cosmetics only for the helping crew, coupled with a new company (offshoot of Athena's Fortune?) and comms. I think most of the abuse would take place if golds, dubloons (or Ramsey forbid ancient coins) were the reward. Regarding the crew being helped, they could have a limit on how high total level they are, meaning people already PL would not be able to get help.

Me and my friends quit SoT many months ago because we got sick of the enforced PvP... We just wanted to sail the seas, go on our own little adventures, do some fishing, and generaly just enjoy the PvE aspect. None of us had any interest in engaging in PvP, and the fact we couldnt escape it meant that even though we adored the rest of the game we simply could not justify playing it anymore. The news of PvE servers made all of us very excited! We could come back and enjoy the game, together, without the constant worry that we would get attacked by some random players that had nothing better to do than sink someone who doesnt want to fight. However, i feel like they have gone too far with how limited the Safer Seas are... heres hoping they re-think some of these choices... Also, Phuzzy, you mention in the video that you want to funnel people into the high seas mode by making the PvE servers even more limited. I feel like you are missing the reason why so many people (like me and my friends) WANT PvE servers in the first place. We dont want a training ground to prepare ourselves for PvP encounters. We want to be able to experience ALL of SoT's PvE content without having to EVER engage in PvP. Someone else in the comments here mentioned "do not punish the Safer Seas players, instead reward the High Seas players". This i feel would be a much better way to go. Add new content that is earned specificly by engaging in PvP on the High Seas, and let us players that do not want to do PvP earn our PvE rewards in peace.

im glad u brought up the quitting because of pointless sinks when i complain about ppl sinking me, everyone says "its a pirate game, expect pvp" or "you signed up for pvp when you installed" i dont play sot often, and only keep it because of a SINGLE friend i play with so when im just trying to get the most out of the game by attempting to solo for a while, it really makes me hate the game when im literally at an outpost changing my clothes just to hear a keg go off on my ship that i havent even touched yet like i wont even get to sort my barrels or turn off my lanterns yet someone just waltzes over in like 5 minutes and kegs me, its pointless sinking; i gladly accept any alliance offered even if i know theyll backstab me i dont care about rep or gold, or even the big money world events like fof athena and reapers are cool i guess but i never touch em cuz they always feel like someones gonna come for me instantly knowing my luck so safer seas honestly just sounds like a perfect mode for me, i get to just sit back and relax my ONLY complaints are 1 : cant invite another crew to join me if i wanna maybe have some pvp practice or work together, and 2 : hunters call is still gonna cap at 40, which makes 0 sense to me...

Honestly the level cap is a bit unnecessary to me, they say players can still experience the same things they would in public servers and then they give you limitations, pve servers alone are gonna be great because so many people want to be left alone and relax during their sessions, and I'm all for it, however I don't like gold reduction or rep reduction or limited by the factions I can do stuff with or stuff relating to emissaries. Hourglass is understandable because it's pvp related... but god damn man just let people have access to everything, let people just between pvp servers or pve and just let people have their fun, you'll still get the players and you'll still get the money due to Pirate Emporium and actual people buying the game

Phuzzy, you nailed us casuals so perfectly! I cannot emphasize how much I appreciate your take on our plight. I remember getting hyped about this game before it was even released. I introduced the idea to my cousins, and they all bought it on Xbox shortly after release. I didn't have Xbox and my computer was too old at the time, so it took a year or two before I upgraded and was able to run the game. It was a blast! I loved playing with my cousins, but I also loved my solo adventures. At the time, I was working from home a couple days a week. Not having a commute freed up so much time for gaming. Then I worked from home almost full time, and it seemed like I had hours and hours to play - especially at night with the guys. This didn't last long though as life had other expectations. My kid was getting older and needing more of my personal time. Then we had a second kid. On top of family life, work priorities changed (some good). Very quickly, my work-from-home granted free time was soaked up. The final nail for me was having to go back to the office for work. I just could not dedicate hours of play anymore. So not only did I become a casual, my logins were rare. So sad. But then my first kid got into video games, and we started playing together. Sea of Thieves of her first computer game. She had no idea how to work mouse and keyboard, but she loved it so much. The first couple months of playing like this were great. We fished, we ate worms, we attacked other pirates and lost because we were objectively terrible at PvP. We had blast. I don't know when it happened (intro of Reapers?) but suddenly PvP became the main focus of every player on the map. We could not go thirty minutes without being harassed by other players. My kid was having a terrible time, and I so was I. That part where you describe three weekends is PERFECT. We just couldn't hang with the community, and we gave up. We recently returned with the Monkey Island tall tales. We haven't gotten so absorbed as we were before, but it's been a breath of fresh air. I had so much hope for the direction of the game because of this, and it looks like Rare is giving us casuals what we've always wanted. I can't wait. Dunno about your concerns. They seem valid. I don't think it will kill the community, because at some point even us casuals will run out of content. We'll also be more comfortable with the game mechanics. That's my hope anyway. I would really like to go back out on the seas on a regular basis. So here's hoping! Thank you for this video. We watch all of them, even if I don't comment often.

If Rare had decided NOT to nerf PvE player progression and content availabilty (or opens most everything up in the future, as is the worry for some), I don't see how that should matter to anyone who considers themselves PvP players? It has no bearing on their ability to continue enjoying the game in the way that they always have. A portion of Rare's website game description boasts, "How you live your pirate life is totally up to you." That's not entirely accurate. By placing progression restrictions and content blocks on the "Safer Seas", a huge amount of the stories and adventures they spent so much effort crafting for the game ends up wasted. The effect is that a casual PvE player is either eventually forced onto the High Seas, or just stops bothering to click the "Play" button anymore, or encouraging their friends to buy the game. It's understandable that you can't gain reputation from the Reaper's Bones in PvE - obviousy, but why lock out so much of the other game content. This way of implementing PvE seems like a lackluster half-measure. It shouldn't simply be, as @PhuzzyBond puts it, "literally nothing more than an extended sandbox tutorial". It only restricts a consumer base that you might have otherwise been able to entice. Admittedly, I don't have the presence in SoT that you do Phuzzy, if any at all really, but I fail to understand why "full blown PvE mode" worries you, or why you think it would cause the community to "die"?

I personally only want to play PvE ever, so limiting PvE content to force players back into PvP if they want to unlock stuff or experience all of the *PvE* content (owning a ship is a ridiculous thing to lock behind the PvP Pain Wall) is unnecessarily punitive. There is a very simple answer for this problem that is being ignored... just make it so that each player account has two entirely separate characters, one for PvE and one for PvP. Allow full access to every part of the game for BOTH, however lock all progress, items, money, and everything else to each mode. That means no taking your legendary beefed up galleon into PvP after leveling easily and safely in PvE... if I play a character in PvP, then it starts at the bottom with nothing like a fresh new player. The only thing that should be available across both accounts is stuff you purchased with real money. I have wanted to play Sea of Thieves since launch, but never touched it due to the unavoidable PvP aspect and my crippling anxiety, which I play games to escape. I remember when games like the first Red Dead Redemption (also a shared world filled with violent thieves) had separate lobbies for PvE players where we could go and do literally everything in the game with our friends without overwhelming stress... we were treated as if we had just as much value as the PvP players. Now, in RDR 2 there is no such thing as a friendly lobby, only a *heavily* discounted GTA passive mode where you can toggle to take somewhat less damage from player attacks, but you still get killed before you can put your fishing rod away. I haven't touched that game in years thanks to the toxic KOS player base, and I spent a lot of money on it. PvE servers (or simply private servers TBH) would be a Godsend that would bring people like me back into the fold of so many great games, and while this isn't quite that, I do think its a step in the right direction to that end. Real life is PvP. It is perfectly valid to want to escape that in my escapism.

I got back on Sea of Thieves for the first time since last year and was pleased to see this mode added. My favorite part of the game is the ship maneuvering mechanics and navigation. I enjoyed getting to play how I wanted, simply sailing and having a good time, without being bothered. It was especially bueno since I haven't played in a long time and my fingers are used to Palworld due to having been playing that at length the past few months.
