We bought this Palm from a palm tree nursery and are moving it from the pot to the ground. The weather is ideal for the palm but not us as it was around 108 degrees. It actually took us around a 1 1/2 to do but felt like a days work.

I planted one and have two more to plant. I’m glad I watched your video after the first one. I didn’t know to add water in the hole while planting and backfilling! I’ll do it on my next 2!

Great video! Scoring the roots vertically before planting will encourage them to grow outward and away from their root-bound structure.

seems no one has done a video explaining the differences between a pygmy date palm and a regular date palm, however, it's also possible that people looking at such a plant knows what to expect a pygmy date palm to be and i'm assuming it's just a smaller variety of the plant that still bears the comparable fruit.

Thanks Andy this is going to help me a lot because I don't have any experience in this. So you're saying do not put any mulch in the hole right? But then once it's fully planted and all the soil and dirt is back in it then we can put mulch around it is that correct? And how much mulch do you think I need? And thank you so much for your help
@EnglandAndy
@EnglandAndy 3 года назад
Yes, according to my local ext office you just use the native dirt and no amendments. Mulch, I put around 3 inches and created a dish so the water wouldn't run away. Don't forget to keep watering.

Andy great video. I have a Pygmy date Palm in the ground next to my spa. It’s actually has two palms coming out from one base. I don’t know what happened but one side died. The other side seems fine. Would I be able to cut the palm at the base to remove the dead half or will it kill the other side?
@EnglandAndy

Thank you for the comments. So this is what you need to do. Put a internet search of UF/IFAS office and find your nearest one. Every county has one and I don't know what zone you are in but these people are excellent in gardening advice . They are free of charge so don't worry about that but they will answer your questions and if you call them they will ask the questions for you. The question you asked me had not enough information , location , soil, diseases,, drainage but the first thing I thought of was Is the palm planted to close to the spa and is the spray hitting the palm ? overtime this will be an issue. Hope this helps.
@cartersboxerandbulldogbabies
You can trim it. It’s two separate trees. Trimming one will not hurt the other.

Thank you so much! I'm a beginner gardener and have a client that has asked for one of these to be planted in their backyard. Showing the whole process was super helpful for me. Also knowing the sandy soil does not need anything added was great info! Not sure if you still check comments, but its January in Florida, is this an ok time to plant one?

Funnily enough, it never changed. It looked as good as ever until about a week ago when the cold came and got a few brown fronds. I will be doing an end of year update video of what I have done in the garden and the palm will be in there but still looks great.

@EnglandAndy
@EnglandAndy 9 месяцев назад
7cm? that's still a seedling, so yes I would. Pygmy's are pretty shallow rooted so it would give plenty of time for each plants roots to entwine with each other or you can take a chance with the plant you have and see if it grows of shoots.
