If typical indoor palms are boring you and you want a more hardy specimen, then you should check out the pygmy date palm. Coming to our country about half a century ago, these guys are the new kid on the block. They don't get too large at all, so they are a perfect potted plant pal for those just starting out, or ones that don't have the space for a rather large tree. True they do need to be outside for the growing months, but if kept inside you could counter this with artificial grow lights. Mine loves them! Be sure to watch the entire video so you can keep yours thriving as well! Plant Prudently!

I have several of these in my yard in Arizona. They're beautiful plants that get only somewhat stressed in the heat of summer when temperatures can exceed 110 degrees. As Justin said, they can be susceptible to a shortage of micronutrients. Therefore, you should fertilize them using a fertilizer specifically designed for palms. Such fertilizers contain some or all of the following: potassium, manganese, phosphate, magnesium, zinc, iron and sulfate.

I'm in Phoenix. The leaves of mine are starting to turn yellow. Am I watering too often (every 3 days) or not enough? Also mine are planted inground around my pool.

Oh they can definitely grow taller than 10 feet. Here in Indonesia, my parents have 3 of them planted in their backyard. They're really old (older than myself actually) and all three of them have trunks that's around 12 feet tall give or take.

Direct Sunlight in Phx heat definitely it will die so fast. No mater how much water you watered. I say this because i have mine in a container i left it direct Sunlight for only 45 mins 105 degrees the leaves starts to burn. I moved it to shaded spot with bright light it does so much better. No more leaves burning. I also mulch it keeps it moist and not have to water quite frequent. I have little ones planted in the ground sitting under Phoenix Sun they don't thrive at all and the leaves isn't green like my container one.

I just received a PDP from Florida. I planted it in a slightly larger terra cotta pot. I did amend the palm soil with some perlite and added Palmtone Organic granular fertilizer per instructions. I mist it every day. I will also add some fish emulsion when it needs watering. Thank you so much for all the helpful information!!

@@TheGreenAlchemist I'm having a concern with the date palm. Noticing some reddish/yellowing/browning leaves. Wish I could send photos. I water it when moisture reading is "dry". PH is at 7.0. Feeding it with MG Shake and Feed. Watering it with room temp reverse osmosis water. Discontinued the fish emulsion. Should I reintroduce the fish emulsion? Misting it everyday. It's on our North-facing front porch. It receives part sun. It's in a terracotta pot with well-draining cactus soil. I would appreciate your diagnosis and suggestions of what is happening.

@@ritaschiferl3615 This almost sounds like a nutrient deficiency. Particularly with potassium, not enough will cause the leaves/fronds to yellow and brown. What type of soil did you use? Palms like this one in particular have specific micro and macro-nutrients that they need regularly to keep them happy and thriving. If you used palm soil like with miracle grow then I would consider introducing either some bone meal, fish emulsion, or worm castings to help later. Or you can use palm-specific fertilizer to help in the spring. Around this time (if you're in the northern hemisphere like me) he'll start to slow down and go dormant in cooler weather. If you feed him now he'll begin to wake back up and not go dormant. In the meantime, I would just focus on adequate sunlight, humidity, and water as normal. Don't go overboard with it though because they can develop root rot rather quickly. If you want to give him anything to help now, a few worm castings would be ok, but not a bunch. Cut back any discolored fronds too. Let me know if you have any more questions at all!

Thank you so much for this video! Edit: I’m growing two of them. One is doing really well, and one isn’t doing as well-I’m not sure why yet. The one not doing well was actually getting *more* light, but maybe my watering schedule isn’t correct. (I have one of each in my two apartments, and they are on different schedules).

Your video is wonderful. Very informative. I took lots of notes. I just bought one of these beauties online, it came all the way from Florida to Seattle area in Washington state. I am in love with it already. My concern is that the soil is really wet. That can't be good, If I move it into a large terra cotta pot (just like yours) with some new soil already in the bottom and sides; placing it quickly and gently adding more soil, do you think it would survive? If not; how do I dry out the current soil ? All I see is the roots rotting from wet soil in a large pot. Once again, thank you for your time and excellent video. Plants are therapy for me. 🌸 Jan Thomson

Sir, you rock! 😎 I just purchased one today, and I was looking for useful info. I just listened to your older vid about the Money Trees which I was having issues with. In my state NM they closed us down because of the virus so I've been using my free time to finally expand my jungle, and knowledge. I love Palm Trees! However, my keeping them alive is far from perfect! I just recently got a couple more magestic palms, hopefully I won't kill them. I have a Parlor Palm,to my surprise its growing fast! However, my question is the watering. Are you supposed to water them all so much water until the water comes out the bottom?

Well, I visited your site AFTER I transferred to a new pot! I will let you know if it lives by cutting 1/3rd tangled root system off. Used Dairy Doo soil mix with Diatomaceous earth and Adzomite for nutrients.

I have one that has 3 trunks, but two are much smaller than the prominent one. It seems when I trimmed the taller one to fewer fronds, opening up more light to the small ones, they grew much better...taller. Could I trim the taller one's fronds totally to a short length, stunting it so the others would gain up to equal height...then have a balanced three trunk plant?

Hi Justin I live in Austin Texas the weather we’ve been having has been very Hot and humid (85 to 101°). I have a question for you I have six date palms all in pots. (large, Med and Tall pots) They’re doing very well. I’ve had some that I’ve had for the couple of years and some that I bought this year. Ok …my question to you is i’ve been doing the finger test about 2 inches and I’m noticing around the perimeter of my pot it’s very moist and the center is very bone dry and roots are coming up from the top what do I do or is that normal? Please help! Thank you Elena

I live in Phoenix, Arizona where it can get really hot (110F or higher) in the summer. The soil is also clay. I have 6 pygmy date palms planted in ground around the pool. The leaves are yellowing and eventually turn to brown after a while. I did some research and I read that this could be Leaf Blight caused by sun scorch. The solution is frequent and deep watering. I have 2 drippers (4 gph) on each palm. How long should I set the watering timer and how often? I am nervous because I also read overwatering could kill them. Can you please help on water amount and frequency? Thank you!
@TheGreenAlchemist
@TheGreenAlchemist 3 года назад
How long ago did you plant them? Did you tamp the soil down around them as you were transplanting? How's your soils pH? Date palms can have some adverse reactions with alkaline soils. Depending on temperature and humidity levels newer date palms need about 20+ liters of water a week. Once established they're moderately drought tolerant. Overwatering can definitely kill them! I can tell you with mine if it's hot enough outside, anything over 85 degrees, I'll water mine at least once a day. I hope this helps. Keep me updated and answer what you can.
