@BigUriel
@BigUriel 3 года назад
You haven't really done many programs, and you've mostly done bad ones, if this is the only one you know that makes sense. In fact SS is hardly an original concept, it's just a simplified/lower volume version of Bill Starr's programs dating back to the 70s. And some things in SS don't make much sense at all, like having newbies who have no aspirations to do olympic weightlifting and have purely strength-oriented goals do power cleans.
@bradekegren1723
@bradekegren1723 3 года назад
@@BigUriel that’s funny you say that, I actually quit doing SS and switched to StrongLifts 5 x 5, since it makes absolutely no sense to be doing power cleans if your main goal is strength. I don’t give a shit about being explosive! Also Rip loves promoting obesity. He thinks if your not obese, you’re under weight. I’ve done plenty of programs, they were all hypertrophy based programs though.

I read the first edition of starting strength many years ago. I have the newer books now and am going to read them. how would you suggest tackling starting strength and practical programming in terms of setting up for myself a course of study. would you suggest reading through them first then going back to highlight and take notes or just do that from the onset? Thanks Rip for all of your work you have done for strength training.

When I threw out my shoulder after high school, the physical therapist only recommended stretching/range of motion exercises..Which I already excelled at because I had above average arm strength. If I had focused on pressing exercises and getting stonger, I could have easily extended my playing career 10 to 20 more years. Now in my 40's that I train these lifts, im in the upper 1 percent of my age group, and feel like I can play old man softball until I cant stand upright.

@macectoman
@macectoman 4 года назад
I did read everything in Starting Strength concerning the squat. In fact, I have read that section a few times. Actually, I'm trying to attain at least one more squat with 405 lbs. by the time I reach age seventy (I have slightly less than 11 months.) Ideally, I'd like to squat with that weight throughout all of my 70th year. Yesterday I was able to squat 375 for one rep twice. (375 x1 x 2) Could you please give me some advice regarding a periodization schedule? I do not ever squat for more than five reps, and most of my sets use 1-3 reps. Thank you. I'm 5'5" tall, weigh ~187 lbs and have a small bone structure [7 inch wrist]. Though I have been diagnosed as "bone on bone" in both knees, only my right knee is arthritic. While the pain in that knee prevents me from doing deadlifts, it does not occur when I squat or perform ancillary - 1 set per week on an alternate day - leg presses on a Nautilus Impact machine.

24:41 "...soreness is chronic, is SYSTEMIC, it's all over a group of muscles, it's a consequence of eccentric loading, and is a consequence of normal training ...soreness doesn't make you stronger, lifting more weight than you did last time makes you stronger; THAT might also make you sore, but the soreness isn't the point [or objective or goal]; if you're training because you like the feeling of being sore, grow the fuck up!!... you can go all the way though for six months of novice progression and be BADLY sore only one time [by accident], and if you're badly sore all the time something is wrong with your PROGRAMMING [you cannot eat or rest your way out of bad programming]..." Seems to me your method has always been the method used to lift more weight. Increase the weight in small increments. Much better illustrations and explanations how it works but it is how i started 65 years ago. The big difference to me would be the fact of the emphasis you put on the squat and the Deadlift instead of the how much you bench mentality. I did read the book and learned a lot of things I didn't know. I'm 80 and sure as hell aren't getting any stronger but when I crash and burn on my motorcycle in the desert, I don't have to call for help. I always get up and without help. Enjoyed the book.
