If millennials didn't change jobs every couple of years, they'd end up making something like half as much. The boomer way of sticking with the same job for 40 years is gone because employers think they can get away with skimping on raises even though they'd pay more to hire a new person.

I saw my dad pursue the "stability" route. He was "laid-off" probably 20 times. Now he & my mom are divorced and neither can afford to even come close to retirement. Not for me, no thank you. I feel absolutely ZERO loyalty for an employer beyond doing the job I'm paid to do. And don't even get me started on their "diversity" programs. I want to do a job (preferably remotely, if possible), and leave and live my own life. My job is not my family. My job is not my religion. My job is not my community. My co-workers are not my friends. My job is not a political outlet. My job is MY JOB. End of rant.

It's like responsibility and needs take a back seat to pleasure and emotion. At some point we have to recognize that there are needs which require sacrifices and compromises. Quitting a job because you don't "like it" is not a valid reason at all. There are legitimate reasons for switching jobs/careers, but that isn't one of them.

Many millennials are changing jobs right now because of remote work and increased flexibility. Pay is a factor but flexibility is bigger. If you have a young family and want to buy a house, the neighborhoods and suburbs near corporate locations are no longer affordable. So people end up moving further and further outside metro areas to find affordable housing. As a result, workplace flexibility or outright remote work become a must. Commutes are not what they used to be because housing prices are ridiculous. That’s the story, not just salary.
@numberfortyone
@numberfortyone Год назад
I’ll also say: give people a break. The worst inflation in decades, insane housing prices, a pandemic with all sorts of ripple effects in mental health and education among other things, a looming recession. Everyone’s just trying to make it work. A lot of times that means changing jobs to improve your odds. It’s not just about bumping your salary and working in pajamas.

For me the biggest reason (or at least one) is that people treat you like absolute garbage and expect your absolute, undying loyalty (i.e. 24/7/365 availability notwithstanding your health or your family's) even though they only pay you minimum wage or slightly more. For example my son was just born and I needed a month off of work because my wife had a C section and we don't have anyone to turn to in our city, but they only gave me a week and even then my boss asked if I could come in for a day or two during that week. It's stressful, it's exhausting, and we don't want to deal with that for 30+ years

I love how this toxic advice is covered up with morality. Work is more than a paycheck! While I do agree that you should find a job that you enjoy doing that gives you purpose beyond just the money AND you should consider that when switching, I think we all know that people would not do most jobs for free. A persons time is the most valuable thing we have and no one should work for an employer who is underpaying you for your time long term even if it’s for a job you love. Most people also have to leave to get a promotion as those are hard to get in house. All that to say please stop punching down on people who are trying to find a better job. If more jobs were palatable from the standpoint of nontoxic culture, good managers, decent compensation, and growth prospects then no one would have to leave.

As someone that worked in finance and handled monthly closeouts for a division. I've seen outsourced departments that were less productive the majority of the time when compared to an efficient department ran here stateside. Add that to all the additional cost in the other country that companies don't take into account like taxes, energy, fuel, customs fees, shipping, turnover, lower quality of products/service, etc. Outsourcing works fine for clothing/apparel, and cheap products. However I hate calling customer service that is outsourced to another country. They usually have limited power to assist the customer, and you often times feel like the company doesn't care about your issue.

A company can have an amazing mission and a culture that you agree with and still fail to pay you well, in which case you are better off finding another opportunity. If employers cared about your loyalty that much, getting interviews and switching jobs for more pay would be much more difficult today.

I worked remotely for the headquarters of one of the largest international corporations. A lot of our US work was offshored to India and while we were making 5-6 figures doing the same job, they we’re getting paid pennies over in India compared to us. My close friend who's the father of 2 is trying to find a 5 bedroom house in Atlanta GA and its a nightmare. His 2 children are a boy and a girl, they are in high school so they cannot share a room. His mother was dying in the hospital of heart disease and she moved back in with her son because the company she worked 40 YEARS FOR was owned by a man who STOLE EVERYBODY'S PENSION, left, filed for bankruptcy and then died. Her and her coworkers couldn't sue anyone because there was nobody to sue, the money was gone, nobody to be held accountable. She didn't know that she was supposed to take steps to protect herself in case her boss STOLE THE ENTIRE COMPANY'S RETIREMENT. Because surely there were laws in place to protect someone like her? Some kind of insurance the government provides to keep working people safe? no, there was nothing. My friend works from home and needs a large office for his job. He now has to go from a 3-4 bedroom, possibly apartment, to a 5 bedroom ranch style home (for wheelchair access) that can support this giant family he's now saddled with because of the negligence of our country. And his children are *seeing* this, and they don't want to be involved in a system that deliberately neglects the needs of their family. He anticipates that they will have to live with him in order to survive here, but I wouldn't be surprised if they grew up and immediately left the country. Now that we have the information of the world on our fingertips, we know what the entire system *actually* looks like. We don't want to be mindlessly tricked into participating in a society that we can obviously see does not value us. We're not having babies, and we're not staying loyal to any job. Everything in this country is about money. Healthcare is about money. Shelter is about money. Mental health is about money. Relationships are about money. Being able to retire and be taken care of when I'm too feeble to function iS ABOUT MONEY. Money money money. You know what? We're playing along now. If you cant pay me better than the other guy, I quit. You go find a worker in India and I'll go find freedom.
