Hi Marta - the damage to the fingernail when soaking isn't from the acetone. Acetone itself will not damage the fingernail and is actually not very harmful aside from removing oils from the skin. The damage occurs from the preparation of the fingernail after removing the gel polish. After each removal, the fingernail is buffed or abraded to prepare the fingernail for another application of gel polish. Each time the fingernail is prepared with a file, it becomes thinner and more subject to increasing flexibility and decreasing the strength of the fingernail. After 4 applications and buffings, the free-edge of the fingernail is much thinner than it is originally. This is the source of the damage. It is my opinion that if the client will return to a salon for color applications, either a hard gel color or nail polish would be best suited for that person. In the case of a hard color gel, the fingernail is only prepared once with a file and unless the base layer is completely removed by injury, the fingernail is not touched by a file again. In the case of nail polish, the surface of the fingernail is smoothed with a buffer and the polish is applied. Subsequent applications require very little smoothing of the fingernail and as such, only a very fine layer of the fingernail is buffed again. Almost no damage is done to the fingernail over the course of 3-4 months.
