It's almost certain that many more than five people died. Stephen mentions *recorded* deaths. There were many people at that time who would not have been 'missed' had they been incinerated.

You’re quite right. Notably the prisoners in Newgate, who wouldn’t have been able to escape their cells. Some did, to be sure, because some walls collapsed and some iron bars melted... But the majority of the prisoners who died in there were not accounted for after the fire, partly because the records of who was in there in the first place burnt with the rest, and certainly because nobody really cared.

Bit of extra stuff: The proper death toll is likely quite a bit higher, but the searing temperatures of the fire could very well have burned bodies of any trapped, alongside the fact that most who probably did die were lower class citizens which the upper class didn’t necessarily care much about, making an exact figure hard to work out.

It'd be interesting to know how many died as a result of the fire. Not just directly like the poor souls who burned to death, but also those who died of starvation and exposure after losing their homes, jobs, and businesses to the fire.

More likely died (temperatures reached in excess of 1,200C) but weren't accounted for, especially the poorer residents.

0:34 The baker Thomas Farriner is credited for the start of the fire but he blamed a mentally imbalanced French laborer named Robert Hubert who confessed that he threw a fireball into the bakery but the indictments against him were signed by the Farriner family.
