Cheerleading is a sport as much as darts, fishing etc (i.e. not a sport at all, more of a pastime). American TV shows Poker on the sports channel so I guess they have a pretty wide idea of what a sport is.

@@hawkpaul8735 There are competitions and it involves extensive physical activity, that's enough to define it as sport. And when it comes to athleticism cheerleading is actually a sport, especially compared to any of the other stuff you mentioned, or things like chess or shooting, which also can be seen as sport.

@@DerEchteBold That it is a sport. if gymnastics is a Olympic sport. Cheer leading could be a discipline with in that category They are both thought the same basics. With the biggest difference is the nature of the two. Regular gymnastics is more often a individual doing a routine and with Cheer leading it's more often a group. The problem with the name Cheerleader is it's image. more often then not it is being used as a aid for the main sports event. The focus is then on that other sport. If done separate as it's own item it could even be that if you would call it group gymnastics people would get more the image that it is on it's own.

It's only 7 minutes long. It was just a short "cameo" for the show, to show support for the charity, in a night-long telethon. (It's one of the problems with these charity telethons that they tend to have too many short "cameos" from everybody - I guess everyone wants to be seen supporting the charity - when it'd probably be better if they rather did a few whole episodes of things, and you could just rotate which shows appear every year. A few "proper meals" rather than constant "snacking", as it were.)

It isn't legally considered a sport even though it meets the criteria for being a sport. An appeals court has ruled the "time has not yet arrived" for cheerleading to become a sport. The Second Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals ruled that while "cheerleading can be physically challenging," it still can't be considered a competitive sport. Dictionary.com defines a sport as "an athletic activity that requires physical prowess or skill and often a competitive nature." Cheerleading definitely fulfills this criteria maybe even better than other activities commonly called sports.

@@brucekaraus7330 When it has come up in the past in a group of friends, we defined a sport as having a governing body. Otherwise, it's an activity or game, where the rules change depending on who you ask.

@putsome basilonit My goodness, of course skateboarding is a sport. By your definition nothing that isn't counted by goals, points or time is sport, like gymnastics, figure skating, diving, dressage, synchronized swimming, freestyle skiing or trick cycling ...but playing chess is, because it has a defined outcome with a winner or a draw?! Sorry but that's ridiculous, if you like such things or not, they're clearly 'sport' nowadays.

@@DerEchteBold From other comment, cheerleading is not a sport for a horrible reason: insurance companies do not have to pay for injuries and schools don't have to worry too much about safety during training and such.
