From the way he was sitting I'd say back brace. And his speech indicates some very necessary opioid medication. One of the problems of being tall and robust is severe back problems. I speak from experience.

Or drunk. Alan said once for budget they used to film 3/4 episodes in a row and he'd go have a vodka and tonic between them cos they were so tiring. It's one of the reasons he left

Julian was once a cutting edge alternative comedian here in UK, but his career never recovered from an ill-judged live TV quip about "fisting Norman Lamont". He seems utterly out of his depth here.

@Smokes McGee I have to disagree, sir. JC was barely off our screens here in UK (I assume you are from UK) before 1993, but conspicuous by his absence for the following decade and a half. Which was a pity as I always rather liked him.

Alan explained one of the reasons he left QI was because it was too stressful, and he would sometimes have a glass of whisky between three episodes that they would film on the same day
