I love how their most pronounced collective gasp of horror was at the idea of playing to a completely empty house.

The Disneyland opening day is legendary. Apparently they only laid the tarmac that day because they were inviting a few dignitaries, celebrities and media folk to look around the park, and the proper public opening wasn’t due for weeks, but obviously the public didn’t get that memo and thought the grand opening was that day. The rides hadn’t been tested properly for that capacity and broke really quickly, with some parents apparently throwing their children to get to the front of queues. It was also during a heatwave with temperatures reaching about 40, and because the drinks ran out almost instantly, loads of people passed out with heatstroke.

Guitar strings broke in mid song, a trap door sprung open and caused an actor to fall through and get a bloody nose that they couldn't get stopped throughout the entire performance and a cat wandered on stage and started meowing off key and they did not seem to be able to chase it off. The audience began imitating the cat so the end of the First Act had the entire audience meowing off key. The rest of the performance that evening was canceled due to " illness."

Stravinsky's Rite of Spring had an absolute riot on opening night.

Harry Houdini was booked in the mid-west and there was a blizzard going on. peeking out from the stage there was a mom and her son (who was a huge Houdini fanboy) and mom had wrestled the horse drawn wagon through the blizzard so the boy could see his hero. Houdini’s staff was going, “just bag it,” but Harry issued some instructions and performed his *huge* illusion show just for the two of them. at the end of the show he stepped out and asked them to be patient a bit. he then had the curtains opened and there was a table set up. his instructions were to go to a nearby restaurant and buy a full supper which he shared with them. Harry was a mensch.

The end of Raiders of the Lost Ark would count as a bad opening day perhaps.

I heard a story about a stage show once that had a truly baffling opening night: as the curtains rose the lead actor got shot by his wife, who was bitter because he was trying to divorce her, and for 15 minutes the audience sat watching his corpse as they thought it was part of the show. It wasn’t until a stray spotlight passed over the body hanging over the front of the stage that one of the people on the front row saw the massive pool of blood forming on the floor and raised the alarm.

The opening day of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway had a decidedly sour note, what with William Huskisson MP getting run over and killed. Eventually, railways worked out that it was on the whole safer to keep passengers (and other members of the public) off the tracks unless inside a train.

The opening of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway did not go well. For the occasion, special trains travelled from Liverpool to Manchester and then returned. They invited the then Prime Minister (Duke of Wellington) and a catalog of the "great and the good". VIPs came from all over Europe. There was a catalog of mishaps but the most serious was that the local Liverpool MP was run over by a train and fatally injured right in front of the Duke and other dignitaries. Then it turned out that the PM was so unpopular in Manchester there was almost a riot and he was afraid the locals were going to lynch him. He refused to leave the carriage until it got back to Liverpool. Despite the inauspicious start the railway was a great success and is widely regarded as a forerunner of modern railways across the world.
