QUÉ vs CUÁL - When to Use “What” and “Which”

When you are trying to decide between qué vs cuál in Spanish, there are a few structures you need to know.
And, these structures are really important because we can't always directly translate qué and cuál between English and Spanish.
More specifically, here is what you will learn in this video:
Firstly, you'll learn why we can't translate qué vs cuál directly as the translation of what and which.
Moreover, while qué is sometimes what and cuál is sometimes which, there are lots of examples where the reverse is also true.
Instead, you need to start with a simple decision about which verbs you are going to use in a sentence.
Then, you need to decide exactly what you want to know. For example, are you asking about definitions or options?
Lastly, you'll learn about a few common mistakes that occur with qué vs cuál and how you can avoid them.

muchas gracias!!!! siempre estoy confundida pero ahora entiendo! my main take away: qué= you are confused and want the definition cuál= you know the possible answers, you just want the information and with “¿cuál es tu nombre?” you aren’t asking what is the definition of “tu nombre”, you just want their name

This is so useful. I am in a learning Spanish group and I’ve been dying to ask my fellow members which apps they use to help them learn Spanish. Someone once taught me that cuál means which one of all of these. Like when you are saying “cuál es tú dirección” you’re really asking which one of all the possible addresses in the world is yours. Because of that teaching I thought the proper way to phrase my question to the group was with cuál but for some reason I still wasn’t sure because I didn’t feel right. Glad I checked because now I’m pretty sure the correct structure for my question is using qué. Gracias 1000 veces. If I could hit like twice I would.

I feel super late to your channel, Andrew. Amazing stuff nonetheless - you have a very engaging manner and clear but warm teaching style, thank you. I've been messing about with bits and pieces of Spanish for more than 20 years - never really doing anything to develop what I picked up from living in Spain for a short time and then having Spanish, Colombian, Argentinian and Mexican friends & colleagues. Because my Spanish speaking colleagues were here (in England) to learn English, I'd feel bad for bothering them with my broken Spanish. But my kids are now teens and they're expressing an interest and have encouraged me to consolidate and learn more. Your channel will definitely help.

Here in Arizona, it's pretty common to hear "que es tu nombre?" and other questions using "que" that you indicated were more properly formatted with "cual." It could be that so many of the Spanish speakers I meet "en la calle" did not have the opportunity for a grammar education in Spanish or it could be that language drift has taken place or it could be that the influence of US English (in which we seldom use "which") has bled into Spanish. ¿Qué piensas tú?

At Real Fast Spanish, we have a native teacher from Spain and a native teacher from Mexico and both say that "¿Qué es tu nombre?" doesn't make sense and they would never use it. So, we aren't sure what is happening in Arizona but as you suggested maybe some US English is affecting the Spanish there.

Excellent video! It was helpful to have the six options listed. I think under most circumstances I am using these words correctly but there was one I found a little surprising and that was number six. I saw that the only option with a noun was Que+Sustantivo; Cual+Sustantivo was not an option. So I would use "Cual es" to ask a question that involves making a choice from a list of possible things, as in your example, "¿Cual es tu musica favorita?" This makes sense. What surprised me a little about the fact that there was no "Cual+sustantivo" option was the last example, "¿En QUÉ país vive Elena?" Honestly, in that situation I would have guessed that I would have used "cual" ("en CUAL pais...") because I am actually asking, "ln which of the countries (from a possible list of several countries) is Elena living?" I'm guessing that I could use "cual es" for an alternate construction of this question, so "cual" is not followed directly by a noun: "¿Cual es el país donde vive Elena?" Is that correct? So to pick something from a list I either use "cual es (the thing from a list of possible things)" OR "que+sustantivo (from a list of possible things)." Correct?

I’m from Spain and for me it would be so strange asking that: ¿cuál es tu nombre?, I would ask: ¿cómo te llamas? rather than ¿cuál es tu nombre? Is more simple and more natural :) Spanish people won’t never ask: ¿cuál de Italia, Alemania y España tiene más gente? We would ask instead that, this: ¿qué país tiene más población? ¿Italia, Alemania o España? Also is more natural to ask that: cuál prefieres? Is more quickly and more natural than ¿cuál quieres ver? A ver es, es cierto que este vídeo es completo pero hay cosas que no se dirían nunca en España. Estoy hablando de cuando estás con gente de tu edad y por ejemplo no te sabes el nombre de alguien. Pues yo sinceramente preguntaría: ¿cómo te llamas? ¿Cuál es tu nombre? Vale se puede usar pero es menor común y algo extraño preguntar de esa manera desde mi punto de vista

It seems that Que + verb is for more general questions while Cuál + a verb is more for specific usage. Is that correct? Also, Do you think you can make a video about writing basic Spanish sentence structure vs. conversational speech? In writing, we may express ourselves with more adjectives and formal language. However, in speech, no matter the language, we tend to speak informally.

I watch these videos because they help me to teach Spanish to my English students. It helps to see it from the another side. And ¿Qué es tu nombre? is very wrong. If they say it in USA, then it is influenced for the English language. I tell to my students that we use Cual when you can choose one in s group and Qué is more open. ¿Qué quieres tomar? What do you want to have? / ¿Cuál quieres tomar? Which one do you one to have? ( I have only these few thing to offer). What is your name?, ok, there are lots of names, but you still can choose one in a group, the group of the names; you can not choose Table or Floor unless your parents are a bit weird persons.

I'm in a dilemma, and could use some help. My native Mexican Spanish teacher (free class at the library, but they also teach Spanish at a tiny private school) is asking us to write sentences using "Cuál" that are exclamatory, including idiomatic expressions. They do not want the phrase to be a question that is simply said with an exclamation or with emotion or irony. None of the students in the class could come up with anything that satisfied the teacher, and I, knowing the way "cuál" is used, could not for the life of me figure out how to do that. When I asked for an example, they seemed confused, and put it back on us as homework, as if we just needed to figure it out. I honestly don't think it can be done, especially after watching this video again, another video again, and reading several articles yet again on how to use "qué" vs "cuál". I have alos looked up the word in an online dictionary that says it is interrogative only. Whereas, "qué" can be both interrogative and exclamatory, according to the dictionary. I have even typed things into online translators, hoping something will pop-up to fill in, but nothing does. "Cuál" is used to ask for information or to ask for a specific choice out of a group of things or from limited options. I see no way to make that type of inquiry into an exclamation unless it is purely a sarcastic statement or ironic or astonishment at someone's choice, which the teachers seems not to want. For example, I suggest things like "¡Cuál quieres!" said with dismay or disgust, like you don't like the answer you got the first time you asked. No go. The teacher said it is actually a question, which it is, said with emotion or emphasis. I think the teacher simply is a native speaker. They are not a certified teacher with a degree in either language or someone who is self-taught and has a lot of skill in the grammar of the language. They are simply pretty good in English due to many years of exposure. I think they are trying to teach something over their head and don't realize it isn't possible. I'm not trying to put them down. I applaud how well they do as a bilingual person. I'm just trying to figure out if what they are asking us to do is possible. And, since I don't think it is, I'm trying to figure out how to show up tomorrow without the 5 exclamatory sentences they want using the word "cuál" without telling them they are wrong! They are a "proper" type, and I'm supposed to respect my teacher. I don't think they would like being told they don't understand their own language. Ugh! Can anyone tell me if it is possible to make exclamatory sentences using "Cuál"?

Just a point to clarify. We would never say "Cuál de Italia, Alemania y España tiene más gente". First of all, correctly it should be said "habitantes" instead of "gente". Also the order of the sentence is not very common. And finally the preposition "de" is not correct here, we don't want to say "from", but "of these", so you could say "Cuál de estos países". So the question would be "Cuál (de estos países) tiene más habitanes, Italia, Alemania o España?

What? That sentence makes sense to my mom at least. Maybe just a different dialect.

The sentence isn't incorrect. If anything, it's just an uncommon way of saying it, but it's understandable.

an example to better understand: "que comida vas tu a comer?" This is asked when it is a general context and they are not in the place where the food is (dining room, restaurant), on the other hand "cual comida vas tu a comer?" this is asked in a very specific and punctual context, and the food is there at that time to "choose"

I watched this video yesterday and thought I understood this. Then, I had a Rosetta Stone lesson today. The picture was various colored balls and one was white. The correct choice was "Que pelota es blanca?". It seems like Cual would have been a better choice to ask me to choose which one is the white ball. Otherwise, I think of it asking me to define a white ball - which seems confusing.

Check out the last use #6 “Qué (sustantivo)”. Here “pelota” is the noun and it sits right next to the question word, so we need “qué”. In addition, there are two ways to ask this question in Spanish: 1. ¿Qué pelota es blanca? 2. ¿Cuál es la pelota blanca? Note the combination of ¿Cuál es ? in the second option.
