The fact that they don’t slide well isn’t because of the felt bottoms but because of the silicone board, if you want a board that slides well then get a mousepad board
Very useful vid. It gave me a much better idea of the sizes of the pieces than looking at pictures and converting inches to cm. I ordered these pieces too and I hope to get them within the next three weeks. Staunton-style large plastic chess pieces are a typical American thing and very hard to come by in Europe. They're mostly wood here, and of a much more stylized design. I read somewhere that the purpose of the felt is mainly supposed to be cosmetic: they make the pieces appear to hover slightly above the surface. Some chess players may also find the sound of a piece hitting the board more endurable with a layer of felt (players like Tobey Maguire 😜 ).
Mr. Holtgrave, The felts can be repaired with glue as stated by the previous comments. Most if not all silicone boards will have this effect on felted chess pieces whether they are of plastic, wood, silicone or other composite material. As per storage, many companies do offer a tournament carry bag to store your pieces, rolled up board and some pens and books for documenting your games. The "smart move" would be to keep your eye out for good "bundled" deals where you can obtain the chess pieces, roll up vinyl or silicone board and the carry all tournament bag. There are some companies that offer a variety of colors and sizes that could also accommodate a folding playing board. Some of the better companies offer an "ultimate bundle" that includes a chess clock as well. Most of them have holidays sales on their chess online stores. Keep an eye out for what favors your needs and taste.
I have played a few games of chess using this set. You can get this set from most online chess stores. They may use different names but in reality it is the same set. Word of advice. If your felt is coming loose. Glue it back on. Silicone boards will cause any chess piece not to slide with ease. This is more of a board issue and not piece issue. This is a nice set but for some reason I have not ever had a real reason to get this set. It is just not an appealing for me to want to get. Don't get me wrong. It is a nice set but it is not a set for me. It is a personal taste issue not a set issue. May this set serve your needs for years to come.
You can order a carry case from geek chess which will come with all pieces 2 extra queens and a strategy book for $35 and change free shipping inside the US.
Removing the felt will not make the pieces easier to slide through the board. The problem is with the silicon. The felt is added intended to slide in a wood board.
Silicone boards do not allow chess men to slide. You can refelt the pieces. Since you have a silicone board you can fold it easily, so go to Walmart and buy a lunch box for five to eight bucks and keep the set in that.
I just ordered one.... Im very in favor with easy to decipher pieces. And weighted... because my first 2 chess sets were magnetic to prevent the domino effect. Its simple and straight to the point so we can actually just play the game.
Ooh I've gotten that set from wholesalechess.com And it's better because there chess set combos comes with a nice chess bag called the Deluxe bag and it's awesome set
Very Nice Review, Zach. Question: At 2:22 on the timeline: "... and they sit on squares that are 2 1/2 inches wide..." Did you mean to say "... squares that are 2 1/4 inch wide..." ?
The felt complaint is way off, nothing slides on silicone and it's probably the silicone that's also ripping the felt. You'll find they will slide on a vinyl or wooden board. Nice set though, I have a similar set but it's triple weighted which is plenty for me.
