What's even more remarkable is like the first Quake remaster, you get this remaster completely free if you already own the original Quake 2 on Steam or GOG. Considering how most game companies are trying to get you to buy a game at full price several times over (with the port of Red Dead Redemption being the most recent fiasco) , id and Nightdive are really setting the gold standard in remasters.
I made a Quake 2 symbol on CAD and cut it with a CNC Lazer back in 97 in highschool. Gave it a diamond polish and I still have it. Haha that was 26 years ago and im 41 now.
@@cyrollanfor 10 bucks hell no, but the best thing about it…I purchased vanilla q2 off steam last year for 99 cents…and the remaster is a free update, and now you can actually play it on the steam deck.
It’s stunning. Playing on a big screen, at 4k 120, the thing is sublime. Made even better, by the way when I got up a few days ago, there it was sitting in Gamepass…for the win! Now, in a perfect world, we’ll get Quake 3 Arena, and I know it’s a different developer, but I’d love to see Unreal Tournament get this treatment. Even the classic Doom games with a graphical upgrade would be fun. Oh, and Rise Of The Triad 😊
i would much prefer the original Unreal, just because i'm a single player campaign kind of guy. but hey, if they bundled Unreal AND UT, that would be a power move!
Brilliant stuff, just like the Quake 1 remaster. Also, the original game and mods are still there if you want to play them instead... no over-writing of the OG game files here 👍
Same for me, friend just got a Pentium 2 computer with Q2 installed on it...and I hated him until my folks bought me some shitty computer that wouldn't even run Q2 ..THEN I HATED HIM EVEN MORE! ! ! xDDD
The simplicity of retro shooters like this is what appeals to me the most. Quake 2 isnt bogged down with complex, half baked gameplay mechanics that you see in modern shooters. It's just, move, shoot, have fun and it's very refreshing.
i’ve got used to and i’m sure others have as well when you boot up a new game and expect to go through a tutorial chapter 😂. loved how they just threw you into the action in the older games
Playing a fps with a controller is a joke, disqualified, funny no mention of this, Makes me think did the person really played the game or is just spitting out what the makers of the game feeds them for cash or a free game.
@@Rainbowhawk1993 yeah, it's like c'mon lol. Getting kinda sick of the pretentious "old good, new bad. People don't make good games anymore" lol. Like it's been one of the best years for gaming in a very long time. With huge releases still coming
I hope this team can also make a complete remaster and reimagination of RTCW, along with prolog mission from consoles, and some more mod missions that fans created over time. That could be also worth replaying I guess!
Dude I’m convinced that nightdive has a remaster in the works, there’s no way they don’t that game is beloved. I hope so I’d even pre order it, which I never have done and otherwise would never do, but for ID and night dive, absolutely.
Tempting! Although I don't have really strong memories of it, I do recall having finished this game and been quite absorbed by it while playing back in the day on my girlfriend's PC. Yeah somebody needs to do a really good 4K reworking of the original single player Unreal. I think there's a fan project, but God knows when it'll be done…
Quake ll 1997 PC with 3Dfx voodoo card and dial up modem was my very first multiplayer ever played online 😎 thank you for this. Hope they bring the original Unreal next
About 2/3 of the way though the new campaign and it's great. Masterclass in level design - intuitive and interesting with tons of action and varied encounter scenarios.
Man this is awesome... I really want a VR mod for it now. There was a Q2 VR mod a few years ago, and it was decent but it needed some more polishing - hopefully they will come back and finish it. These old shooters feel SO GOOD in VR, just the environment and textures really work well on VR headsets and really bring you into the world, its fantastic.
I notice nobody in these reviews mention that there’s a grapple hook you can get from the console in any campaigns in the remake, bring the console down, command is GIVE GRAPPLE HOOK
This is a game from the golden age of PC gaming (1995-2002). I originally got Quake and Quake II the Christmas they came out (1996/1997) and event started making levels for them up until about 2000. From all the games I got back then - Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, Half-Life, Kingpin, Blood etc these have been the only games I have re-installed every few years for the last 27 years. Several times I even started doing levels for a few months (which the remaster has gone and got me doing again - currently making a Quake and Quake II level). The new chapters are excellent, it just feels like a new reason to play the game, a huge nostalgia trip. Just a shame the community will never be as big and the multiplayer servers are no where near as varied or as busy. People are still making levels though.
They need to patch in the machine gun kick back for single player. If I recall correctly it was never in death match but it feels terrible in the remaster without the kickback.... But that is literally my only complaint. Such a good game.
Yeah they have enhanced some of the attacks. During development of the remaster they were given access to all the motion filled too. The flying units are more aggressive too trying to shoot you while also trying to get close and stab you.
Saw it in Game Pass, didn't expect much of it, but it appeared to be do much more fun then some recent AAA games Btw Bramble The Mountain King is also a Game Pass gem
why didn’t Quake 3 Arena 4k remaster for consoles a couple years ago get this type of buzz ? that games a classic though i haven’t played it since 99/2000
RANT INCOMING (not targeting Gaming Bolt specifically) I hate the term boomer shooter. I get that it rhymes, but boomers had almost nothing to do with video games other than trying to ban them. It was Gen X who first truly embraced video games. Boomers are people 59 and over. People like Jack Thompson. People like Tipper Gore. Here's who Gen X is: John Carmack and John Romero. The creators of these games. But I guess we're gonna stick with boomer shooter because it rhymes. RANT OVER
@@Alex-pk1iy I looked online and I'm certainly not the only one who thinks this. If it's my mistake, it's nice to have company. also, it';s funny to see other people making the same rant as me.
Free for owners of the original and 20 bucks for everyone else, stellar performance on EVERY platform, and with as much content as it has and the I’d vault, playable e3 demos?!?! This is one of the greatest remakes of one of the greatest shooters of all time. Carmack continues to bless us all these years later not even being involved. Also that machine games campaigns is excellant. Like another comment said, compared to the average remaster, or new game for that matter, would be 6 x the price for 1/4 the effort and content. I love ID software.
@@TdotTubeYes it was, although champions isn't the greatest and never really got finished imo. The hit detection/coding and/or Lag is atrocious and the champions idea itself has mixed feedback. I for example do not care for the champions aspect.
I was pleasantly surprised by the additional areas that were not in the original. It gives a sense that you are exploring the world again when you find an area that wasn't there before lol.
Great game for the gyro bros. Needore arena shooters with gyro on PS5 not a fan of BR game types, but Fortnite and Warzone adding a complete gyro feature suite will help the input geow in popularity immensely.
My only gripe is that Quake 2 64 is not the authentic 64 version just modified to almost emulate it. The original Quake did a better job presenting the 64 version. The trophies kinda suck too, they just require you to beat all of it while the original had other challenges.
Glad to see the classics holding their own to the new games today. They really need to bring back Duke Nukem that series has been ignored for too long and I have played through the 3D collection and I loved it. Now if they can pick up from when the PS3 game ended fans might be happy to power kick something into a space hog.
A couple of issues with your review: - Enemies did duck projectiles such as blaster shots and rockets in the original release. This is not a new feature. - You did not talk about the new attack Berserkers have which is often unavoidable and can ruin many higher difficulty runs.
I'm in a discord with the devs, they're thinking of nerfing the attack so that jumping at the right time nullifies the damage, hope you enjoy that lol also the attack was made from leftover animations in the berserker's files, other enemies had restored animations like that too. The Parasite now has a projectile tongue instead of a hitscan one so it's not only dodgeable but the tongue can get lodged in a wall, making ut reuse a cut tugging animation before it pulls it out
@@PlagueInjected because without it they literally are a non-threat lol. I mean you can literally outrun them and they're melee only enemies that take a mere 2-3 super shotgun blasts to deal with, they're only some semblance of a threat in a large distracting crowd (which they're not always found in) or with a jump attack to close the gap. Essentially they're the reverse of the Brains getting their rework backported from The Reckoning, Brains are slow but pull _you_ in to deal their melee damage whereas berserkers are speedy and pull _themselves_ in to melee you and without it they're both non-threats whose only saving grace is a noticeable health pool in terms of combat lol
They did dodge but it almost felt random when they would do it, it was also very slow and basically made them easier to kill instead of harder. This behaviour has been made much quicker and more responsive and is quite effective for dodging things like rockets.
I enjoyed Quake 1, hated Quake 2, and played the crap out of Quake 3 and all the mods (especially rocket arena) back in the day. Q2 made me sick feeling back then on CRT @60fps and it still makes me dizzy today at a locked 144fps... I played for a hour last night and I had to go lay down.
Bizarre that none of the major reviews mentioned the glaring absence of an RTX mode. Like it or hate it, having the option is clearly an omission you would think someone would consider worth mentioning.
Sorry i don't like it and it still needs better new higher textures being made to it as this remaster still looks old with blurry low res textures it just doesn't give me any vibs to go back play it. But on the other hand the rtx version does but i just needs a 4090 as i want 4k maxed out ray tracing to appreciate the games remaster lol
Textures, some models have very bad resolution. "Remaster" its look like video fix and modern patch for win10\11 system. No details for objects in 2023. The great remaster for game? Its Black Mesa for Half-life 1.
Comeon the Game has aged terrible with Time... this remaster is useless ....imo though being great in its time, the game now is just an old hag with new makeup.....
