So, I tried something similar to this at my house.... And I went and got a hair dryer from Good Will... Well, it died before I got the fire too hot, so I hijacked my brother's miniature Shop Vac, and switched the hose around to blow. Needless to say, it goes through fuel super fast, but holy cow, it gets HOT. I was only trying to melt a bunch of soda cans, and it melted the cast iron bowl I was using as a crucible, as well as the tip of the steel pipe I had to focus the vac stream without getting the hose too close to the fire and risk damaging it... All in all, I had a bunch of fun. Also, a lot of dog food cans are made of steel, and can be used as one time use crucibles, though after you're done with the first go, they quickly rust and fall apart. Oh dang, yeah I bet that burned hot! You really don't need much air at all, especially when you're forging and not casting. Sounds like a good time :D And thanks!
@lou Sounds good to me! I never managed to get my hands on fire bricks. I just use the concrete mix that King Of Random did for their portable furnace, it tends to work pretty well, but it falls apart if it gets too wet and such.
You are what you tube should be good content small channels that you can actually ask questions on and contact the creator not one of those corporate channels that do it only for the money thank you for being one of those you tubers.

@@BennettTheSmith Yes I had a similar setup when I first started out using concrete bricks and a old hoover set to blow. They only lasted a couple of heats before they perished. I liked the steak anvil idea tho, kudos.

I'm assuming that was a non-galvanized nail? The whole family here looking forward to the possibility of a live stream...well...my wife probably doesn't care, but the kids and I are looking forward to it.
I'm looking into how to do a stream. I probably just need the cable to connect my good camera to the computer. And yep, not galvanized. Just your run-of-the-mill "big ol rusty nail". My mother found a box em for me, each about the size of a pencil. Good stock for small projects.

The water was to keep the heat of the spike from burning the hole wider - which would leave the spike loose instead of held firmly in place. I also quenched off the bottom of the spike before pounding it in. Dumping water over the spike after hammering was also just to cool it to prevent the wood from burning. It's possible that it also slightly hardened the spike, but only a little and that wasn't the main intent.
Unfortunately unable to enjoy this. The video playback was really glitchy. Other videos are playing fine. Shame, I got really excited when I saw that you'd uploaded.
