"And love is not what revolution's for!" Has anybody ever noticed that Ramin tends to get cast in roles in which his characters are to busy plotting revolutions to fall in love. "Who cares about your lonely soul?" Lol
Lol I went in not knowing anything about the musical only piecing things together as I go I thought Ramin plays Anastasia love interest cause they both sound the same and was shocked during still/Nava flows cause I thought he killed her
I remember when I saw this live. Odette was dancing during Anya's part, then the Prince came and joined her as Dmitri's part began. The Grand Duchess sang over the Dance of the Four Signets. Having noticed the pattern by now, when Rothbart showed up and started dancing, I was like "(Hey Gleb, I see you up there, are you going to sing next?)" and what do you know, he did! SYMBOLISM!!!
The real genius was finding actual ballerinas to perform the actual Swan Lake dance during this scene. Now THATS genius. Especially having them dance to Swan Lake with out bumping into the stage seats
This whole musical is basically taking the story/lore/zeitgeist/mythology/whatever-you-want-to-call-it of Anastasia and turning it into an updated 1920s adaptation of Swan Lake. Crazy idea, I know. But here me out. - The entire opening act depicting the Bolshevik takeover is basically presented as interpretive ballet with almost zero dialogue. The girls' fancy outfits and long sleeves etc. are evocative of swan imagery. - Anya is the swan princess, robbed of her identity and stuck in an unnatural form. - The ghosts of the other Romanovs who pop in and out of different scenes in a Greek chorus-y way (especially the older sisters) represent the other maidens stuck in swan form for as long as the main princess is cursed. - By reclaiming her real identity and finding a way to live a new life, Anya frees the other ghosts/"swans" at the end so they can celebrate and move on The fact it includes a scene where the characters actually WATCH Swan Lake just seals the deal for me. The only thing I'd consider adding is an Anastasia impersonator character to serve as the "Odile" and make Anya question if she really is the missing princess.
@@Akanint I mean if they had room I have no doubt the only thing they couldn’t really do with was the ending. The ending is tricky because as we all know that Anastasia is actually dead and they couldn’t go with the original ending so you get the ending that we got which is a little bit awkward.
OKAY BUT WHEN EVERYONE IS SINGING AND IT IS COMPLETE CHAOS, DMITIRI'S PART IS SO CUTE. "Home, Love, Family, she will have all of it. i will help her find a way Anastasia" I AM ACTUALLY CRYING THAT BOY IS IN LOVE
which swan lake song starts at the beginning???? I'm in love with the "dun da da da" tune at the beginning and I"M SO FRUSTRATED I DON"T KNOW THE NAME OF THE SONG
Gleb isn’t in love with her…? Actually, he wants to kill Anya because he’s pressured to do so. But he’s stalling, and at the same time he doesn’t want to kill her.
@@scarlett.yuhhhh Gleb's interest in Anya is up for interpretation by the actor playing him/director, as well as the audience. In my opinion their interaction during Rumor in St. Petersburg defines Gleb's opinion of her. Some actors choose to play that scene out as an officer simply trying to be a good comrade to a poor street sweeper and others really go hard with romantic vibes (or as much romantic vibes a communist officer of a dictatorship can offer).
@@scarlett.yuhhhh "my heart and mind at war [...] and love is not what revolution's for!" He stalls to kill her because he's fallen in love with her. That's why he doesn't want her to be the real Anastasia at the end either
I like to think his interest in her originates from the trauma of his father's actions during the coup and how it affected his childhood. The fact that she lived allows for the possibility that his father was even the slightest bit redeemable, and that small twisted hope manifested as what he thinks is love but is really just relief from deeply internalized shame. I think Gleb's attitude & military career is his way of trying to understand why/how his father did the things he did, and my heart desperately wants the scene where he spares Anya in Paris to be a direct reflection of what might have happened that night in the palace with his father and the Romanov children. It would just be so poetic if she'd been intentionally spared that night as well.
DMITRI: Home! Love! Family! She will have all of it! I will help her! HAS ME WEAK, I’M IN LOVE! He’s so in love with her it kills me. GLEB: My heart and mind at war... The times must change The world must change And love is not What revolution's for... Can we talk about how Gleb actually loves her and can’t hurt her. He betrays everything he is and has for her. It’s so passionate. He needs to kill her, but he’s desperately in love with her and in the ballet I was dying when they both were singing for her. I still ship Anya and Dmitri allllllll the way, but let’s take a minute for Gleb.
Personally, while I definitely ship Dimitri/Anya first since 1997, I can see the appeal of Gleb/Anya because, you have to admit, it'd be even more romantically impossible and star-crossed!
I will take this one moment for Gleb but then it's back to f*** off Gleb. he's literally the worst. And I think it's more to some degree that he's in love with like the idea of Anya but at the same time I get where you're coming from so I'll take this one moment but then no
When I saw it live I thought "aw, someone's falling hard" and then Still/The Neva Flows Reprise started and I wanted to yell "BACK UP B*TCH" when I saw his gun. It was pretty intense, but GlebxAnya is still pretty good tbh
I’m in tears. Ballet is one of my most favourite things, and Swan Lake being mixed with the music of Anastasia at such an important part in the musical makes my heart swell. I couldn’t be more happy that I’m seeing this in December on their tour. Pure genius.💖
i love the countermelody with gleb and dimitri towards the end of the song, it really takes the original melody of once upon a december to a whole new level
Of course in the animated film the ballet they see is "Cinderella" (a bit of stretch too because Prokofiev's Cinderella premiered in 1945) but in the film of course that fit very well because it reflected Anya's Cinderella-like transformation. But Swan Lake is perfect for this because it reflects the story of a vulnerable woman (Anya=Odette), her prince (Dimitri=Siegfried) and another man in hot pursuit of her (Gleb=Von Rothbart.)
So is Cinderella. It was composed by Prokofiev who was inspired by Tchaikovsky's ballets like Swan Lake. Just like how the musical Anastasia is inspired by the movie.
The movie was more historically inaccurate than I thought. So I guess using Swan Lake here makes more sense because of how the story stays on the riches to rags target.
god i swear this is the only musical i've ever wanted to see live, not even hamilton when i got obsessed with it. i wish i lived in america, honestly. i won't get this cast if it ever comes to england 😭😭
That moment when they all come together and sing "Find a way, Anastasiaaaaaa!!" I heard this for the first time and fell to my knees. My gods. Stunning.
this song is soo well done like the part where thyere all singing at once is super cool bc its theyre all leading up to "Find a way , Anastasia." but their intentions are all so so different!! i love it
Of course, Ramin is the master of romantic singing. I love him so much from Phantom that even me, a hard Dimitri/Anastasia shipper from the animated movie since I was 5, wants to see Gleb and Anya together, if only for a moment, he's just *that good.*
ANYA Can this be the evening Can this be the place Am I only dreaming Looking at her face Everything I wanted Suddenly so clear My past and my future so near DMITRY Next to me this frightened girl Holding tight as the dancers whirl Keep your nerve and see this through It’s what you’ve come to do DOWAGER EMPRESS See that girl Could it be (spoken) Don’t be ridiculous (sung) I refuse to dream I refuse to hope I must stop believing I will never find her GLEB She’s near at hand Yet here I stand My heard and mind at war The times must change The world must change And love is not what revolution’s for DMITRY & GLEB Someone holds her safe and warm Someone rescues her from the storm Simple things but one thing’s clear: It’s fate that brought us here ANYA & DMITRY GLEB DOWAGER EMPRESS Painted wings, Home, love, Simple things. silver snow, fam'ly. Simple things! whirling like a ballet. She will have And whatever I have to do Things my heart all of it! I'll do. yearns to know. I will help her Simple how simple men ANYA, DMITRY, DOWAGER EMPRESS, GLEB Find a way... Anastasia!
I think my favorite thing about them using Swan Lake instead of Cinderella is all of the jokes the old aristos make at the Neva Club about “real Russian ballet”
As much as I love Anya and Dmitry together, Gleb wad so, so so so in love with her. I can’t help but ship Anya and Gleb. He was such a sweetheart with her and didn’t go through with his mission AND he covered for her!!! That’s love!!!! Wow!!!!
A.J.H Artist & Writer Over twenty times is a normal person; you're still safe. Better than my listening to this and "In a Crowd of Thoudands" on loop all night. . .
Dimitri, yes I know it's spelled Dmitry in the musical but, eh. When he says, "home, love, family! She will have it! I will help her!" Just made me love him and ship him and Anya way harder than I already did! 😁😄❤
I remember seeing this on broadway. The last 40 seconds with the harmonizing was amazing. The whole crowd started clapping in the middle because Christy’s voice was so amazing and outshone all the rest. It was beautiful
when i saw the musical, this was my favorite scene. it put chills down my spine to watch the ballerinas dance while they were harmonizing. absolutely genius 😍😍😍
I’m a complete idiot because when I saw this on tour I fell in love with it but I totally did not get that it was gleb and dmitri harmonizing at the end (I was so high up I thought it was vlad singing at the ballet, not gleb, and I was so confused as to why he was singing about his love for anya and why gleb at the end didn’t shoot her) BUT NOW THAT I KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON IT ALREADY MAKES THIS AMAZING SONG 10/10 TIMES BETTER!!!! The countermelody is so beautiful and adds to the haunting effect of the swan lake score mixed with Anastasia’s score
I think it's supposed to have the same vibe to it. Darth Vader's theme is played whenever he enters a place, and the music played before Gleb starts singing is the music from Swan Lake that introduces Rothbart, the 'villian' in the ballet.
When Gleb and Anastasia had their little meet cute I was thinking "Wait... No... They're not gonna ship the main character with the villain are they? 👀" And then when I got to this song and Gleb sings "My heart and mind at war... Love is not what revolution's for" I was thinking "OH MY GOD YOU MADLADS YOU ACTUALLY DID IT." Gleb and Anya's interactions simultaneously made the subtext easy to pick up on, but then still managed to surprise!
If this song was in the film, that would have been so great with the animation of Anya, Dmitry, The Empress, and even Rasputin (in disguise) watching the ballet but the voices in their head. Kinda like with Something There in BEAUTY AND THE BEAST.
Will someone please tell me who is singing the high part when Ramin and Derek are singing together at "It's fate that brought us here" !! I should def be able to tell but I can't ????? I FEEL FAKE!? But who is singing the high part.
missshelbayy Yeah it's Derek. I have listened to Ramin sing a lot so I can pick his voice out easily (years of obsession) and if you listen carefully you can hear Ramin easily, in the show when he is harmonising with someone else (Mostly with Derek) he sings the low part and the other person gets the high part.
If anyone's curious, this is what they're saying from 3:05 to the end: ANYA & DMITRY GLEB DOWAGER EMPRESS Painted wings, Home, love, Simple things. silver snow, family. Simple things! whirling like a ballet. She will have And whatever I have to do Things my heart all of it! I'll do. yearns to know. I will help her Simple how simple men ANYA, DMITRY, DOWAGER EMPRESS, GLEB Find a way... Anastasia!
This was my favorite performance in the play! It was beautifully acted and the dancers in the middle were absolutely mesmerizing. You can hear all the emotions come through here, but I wish I could see that ballet scene again. ;w;
People compare Gleb to Frollo.but I disagree, he seems to have something resembling a heart and genuine remorse and is a bit in love with Anya, Frollos only 'remorse' is religious guilt and judgement and he's only in lust with Esmeralda.
The story behind this musical and movie is so heartbreaking both do well but it never had a happy ending and although many say Anastasia is dead many people believed she continued to live (she’s dead now or else she’d be 115)
Two sides of the coin both men are in love for the same woman Anya/Anastasia, Gleb can be a dark reflection of Dmitri both of them are attractive and charismatic young men but both will just deny and suppress the feelings towards her for a time being and torn between their love for Anya and what they feel for Dmitri letting her go back to her family and for Gleb killing her for duty
Does anyone else keep thinking the the first part of the song, the plucking part, is an ad. Every time I'm like ugh there's an ad then I'm like oh right
