Facing Magnus Carlsen is usually very tough, especially when you go into an endgame. It was an equal endgame between the World Champion and Russian GM Sanan Sjugirov and then something spectacular happened.

I love how Magnus had his King take a stroll literally all around the board, getting checked non-stop. That takes balls.

Hard for a queen alone to deliver a mate, so Carlsen took the pawn and new he could run back, he is good at endgames

I think he purposely did that to gain some time on his clock...he knows hes gonna get checked and he will gain increments by making quick moves..really clever stuff

All of his pawns were protected so it was kinda easy to see there is no seriously dangerous checks and king can easily get to safety. Doesn't really take balls, just takes little chess understanding.

Sanan knew his time was almost up, so he did a quick move- only to instantly regret it. Anyone that doesn’t play blitz wouldn’t understand the element of a time crunch.

I play blitz and i'm not very high rated, but that would still be a huge blunder in my elo and they had second increments. Not saying it was an unbelievably bad move or anything because it is blitz, but that still is a huge error for a GM

@ursuss100

Yeah it's very easy to blunder in blitz, at all levels... time flies FAST when you're thinking, and even when using Fischer timings you only usually get like +2sec increment per move so you still have to chain move. Zeitnot is a massive source of pressure in chess games, and makes players prone to blunder... :(

That just happened to my opponent today (I play chess in club and am doing our regional amateur league matches with them)... I was in a slightly unfavorable position playing black (it showed as +1.8 for white on the computer during post-game analysis, equal material on the board but white had positional advantage), and out of the blue he blundered his queen... He said afterwards that he was starting to feel tired, was too confident with his attack position, overfocussed on it and basically just overlooked the simple thing. Clearly just an oops moment...it can happen to everyone.

oh one more thing! replay shows that GM Sjugirov, in my view, had a quick mental lapse or fell victim to a blind spot in chess: he probably confused the queen for the king and, thus, placed his queen on d2 trying to check Magnus's king. i think that is what happened in fact because looking closely at the pieces, they do appear to be quite similar. so the fault lies in the design of the pieces and not GM Sjugirov! sometimes in speed or bullet chess players confuse pieces whose design seems very similar and being that they are under time pressure, they tend to make these kinds of errors. but even if that isn't the case here and people disagree and say "no, what happened is that GM Sjugirov simply blew it by forgetting Magnus's queen in trying to go after the king," we still ought to give GM Sjugirov credit for the effort and great game that he had against the higher rated Magnus. what i really like is how well behaved and professional these guys are, you would think that they are not aggressive at all in real life, i mean chess is after all a challenging game involving fierce battles of conquest and destruction. that's all folks! thanks
@FredPlanatia
@FredPlanatia Год назад
is it so similar? The King has a cross at the top and the queen has a circular crown. I guess his eyesight is not impaired. I knew someone who had macular degeneration and they put little flags on the pieces to distinguish them. I think it was just at that speed and time pressure, you make mistakes

@albertjumping4648 2 года назад
this is normal chess accident or mistake. it happens a lot in speed and bullet chess. everyone by now recognizes that they too have made the same error of leaving your queen hanging. the game was a draw, and Sjugirov probably missed a few opportunities here and there. he played well in fact. but when you are down on time and material, and on top of that your king is naked or exposed to constant checks by white's queen, you have less control of the game, your pieces crumble as your mind fails to stay calm and in full control of the situation on the board. Magnus played excellent and bravely like the true champion that he is. He created opportunities out of small seemingly unimportant situations, gradually shifting the position toward complicated scene where he would gain small advantages that were then converted into bigger ones. like his 2 knights attack being posted finely on the left flank and attacking multiple areas of black's camp. eventually black's position crumbled and GM Sjugirov found himself needing to protect the b pawn with his rook. black's queen had remained more or less defensive while white's queen was menacing. people don't forget that chess is NOT A GAME OF PEACE BUT OF WAR. You either fight or lose everything. Concessions are rarely made in chess and most trades happen either by force or with some other ill intention in mind. you might think that chess is a game of kings and queens and soldiers fighting to survive or to conquer their enemies and take over their lands, civilization and resources, but these days it is more than that. you now have the digital clocks and computers and programs running the show, new tournament rules and regulations also impact the way the game is played and player performance. GM Sjugirov in the end played honorably, losing only due to a natural error that just about every single chess player has done and is very familiar with: putting his dear queen before an opponent's queen. should a new rule be created that forbids winning that way? interesting, magnus quickly grabbed the black queen. can a player like magnus refuse to take the queen even though the rules allow it? he could have said, "hey brother Sjugirov you left your queen under attack, so can you please take back your move and place it out of danger?" that would have been nice of magnus, yes. but the time was short and normally players do not forgive an opponent's simple unintentional yet fatal error. in the end they simply shook hands, while Sjugirov walked away probably feeling confident that that Magnus did not defeated him except for his error. that's all folks! thanks
