Im so happy all these novels written by Black women are getting adapted. First, Black Cake, The Other Black Girl and now Queenie. I think, my favorite one was TOBG, the ending excepted, bec. I like thrillers better than literary fiction! Edit: Wow, it really looked like Queenie isnt for me. Also, I'm tired of the "Black (wo)men abused me" excuse. I think, Queenie dates wm bec. she has internalised anti-Blackness and this would have been interesting to explore and deconstruct.

On the surface it seemed like it would be perfect for me as someone who wants to see more black British women on my screen! But it mostly just missed the mark I’m afraid 😢 Maybe if you’re bored you could check it out, you might enjoy it more than I did? 😅

Personally I don't see how it's an "excuse." It's always both. Like yeah, white people abused by white people probably rarely do this thing where they then only date non-whites. But just because someone locates their racial preference in terms of abuse doesn't mean it's an excuse. Two things can be true at once and I think we can discuss both without assuming it's an excuse.

I bought the book ages ago and couldn’t get past chapter one. I felt the same way about The Other Black Girl. Almost unreadable but I did push through most of that one.

Queenie the character did not embody the stereotype of a strong black woman
@JeannesMovieChats
@JeannesMovieChats 15 дней назад
Exactly! So the whole commentary on the stereotype made absolutely no sense! 😩 Now if it had been about her friend Kyaz THEN the script would have been scripting…

When she was giving that monologue I kinda rolled my eyes because it felt unearned. Just thrown in to appease the Black woman audience.

Tbh I feel the same way about this show great exploration of trauma & how it manifests but I did not like other aspects of this show especially how Queenie was chasing whiteness & being mistreated by white men in this show.
@IshtarNike
@IshtarNike 12 дней назад
But that's a real phenomenon. I've got a friend who does that. Seems to be a trauma response to her family issues. She's cool with black friends but clearly "needs" a white SO. Maybe it wasn't handled well but that doesn't mean the show was endorsing it. I mean it's literally a trauma response so I don't see why they shouldn't explore it. Trauma leads to some really fucked up behaviours and yes some of them intersect with race and internalised racism. It seemed pretty deliberate to me and they were clearly setting up the black guy to be the ultimate Mr Right so I don't see much of a problem.

Your eyeshadow looks gorgeous! Thanks for the review. I did not enjoy the book so I'm not rushing to watch the show. I still need to check out the Black Cake show. The book was so well-written.

Thank you for your review. When I saw Queenie being advertised as 'The Black Bridget Jones', and the BBC interview, I had concerns. Glad you mentioned Chewing Gum - I loved it! Ms Coel wrapped it up in 2 seasons, very smart move 😇

Hi Jeanne, great great review, I enjoyed it very much. I saw Queenie this weekend just gone and liked very much. But now I do see and take on bored everything you say and criticise. You are right about everything. I would like to add that it is good how pro the show is about talking therapy and that it shows the benefit therapy can have on someone. For you get a sense that Queenie does love herself and members in her family more by the end. However, Queenie's trauma is massive and the reality is it would take years for her to process it. It's good as well that the show looks at the stigma some British Caribbean families have around talking therapy, especially older generations. And it's great that Queenie's Grandad was the one to see it as a good thing and encourages the rest of the family to support Queenie is her therapy. (Am sorry Jeanne if anything I say around race and stigma is ignorant, I know that as a white man I will have blind spots when it comes to race and sexism too), I felt it was good of the series to say that counselling is for everyone. I also really liked the character Frank, he was the only man, outside of Grandad, who cared and loved Queenie. I completely agree with everything you have said though Jeanne and I would say Queenie was a good show, rather than great, for all the reasons you point out. Again great video Jeanne, always a lot of fun, laughter and valuable insight. Looking forward to the next one. Hope you are well Jeanne to and all your loved one. Take care always ☺☺

Hi Mark, thank you for sharing your thoughts as always! 😊 I’m glad you enjoyed the series, there was some good stuff in there! I just had some high expectations going in and after getting brilliant and more nuanced shows like insecure and chewing gum, this felt a little pedaestrian to me… But still, very important topics were highlighted here which is great!

@@JeannesMovieChats Hi Jeanne hi, thank you very much for getting back to me, always lovely to hear from you. Yes you are right, it was pedestrian a lot of times, but still good. I need to watch both Insurance and Chewing Gum, am sure they are both brilliant. I loved I May Destroy You and it was incredible. Truly amazing show, in every way. Again great video Jeanne, keep them coming, your videos are always amazing. Slightly off topic Jeanne, but Star Wars The Acolyte is amazing. Loving it at the moment. Hope your having a great day Jeanne, speak again soon 😊😊

@@JeannesMovieChats I wasn't a fan of the book and forced myself to finish it lol. Queenie was not very relatable for me. Most of my black women in our USA based bookclub, didn't like Queenie either. Sadly some of us find it hard to criticize or give unfavorable opinions of fellow black folks art, film etc. Seems out of guilt and "not supporting" but I'm not carrying that burden!

Not sure why the name of the show is "cliche" when it's literally the characters name. Many people IRL are named Queeneth and go by Queenie.
