I really enjoyed this show. It showed the nuance of black women working in white spaces well. I love how they depicted a Jamaican British family and the portrayal of South London

I haven't finished the book yet, but I read the first half And I feel like in the book the racism was deeper with Tom's family bc in one scene in the book she played a board game with his family and his uncle said the n word. So it almost showed more of why she didn't like his family rather than just in the show how they have her have that outburst about the nan hopefully being dead And also more of how tom didn't defend her in those instances against his family rather than her making an outburst and being in the wrong It seemed like in the series they made her more into the villain Where as although in the book you were annoyed by her actions you saw more reasoning behind it Although the series was a fun watch idk if they fleshed it out enough to make you feel why she was acting the way she was. Like in the book Also in the book you really felt more of how adi was fetishising her compared to in the series Like I feel like they did hit on a lot of things in the book but also in a way made it TV appropriate Which makes sense But it takes away the weight of what was going on and makes it so you feel like everything isn't that big of an issue

That's actually good information and context for her character. It definitely chenged my perception of Queenie. I think the 8 episodes were a challenge and things weren't able to make it in. Maybe if it was 10 or 12 episodes like a lot of other shows, they'd be able to paint a more complete picture.

Wow, it's so interesting hearing different perspectives. As someone who had never read the book, I think they did a great job drawing a rich picture for audiences to understand Queenie's frustration, anger, and whirlwind of emotions. Right off the bat, I understood why Queenie hated Tom's family; the uncomfortable body language towards her, the racist comments from the grandmother, and the mutters and stares from other family members were beyond enough for all of them to get the kiss of Will Smith's hand. Her outburst was valid, but when a woman who fits the description of Queenie (deeply melanated, curvaceous, braids, etc.) shows signs of anger, she's immediately labeled as an angry Black woman or a giant troll from a scary folklore story. Even in moments when we're being disrespected, society has programmed us to believe that a Black woman's anger is a massive overreaction and that in itself is so infuriating. We're not granted much sympathy, grace, or compassion and viewers get to see that when we see how Queenie is treated by all the people in her life. Also, after seeing how Tom not only failed to defend Queenie in that scene but also showed strong signs of racial judgment, similar to his family, I could only imagine the difficulty of having to take that all in all while still processing you just had a miscarriage with this man's baby. As a woman who struggles to express her emotions, she was tongue-tied and overwhelmed, and I thought the actress did such a great job at showing all of this. It was so good!

I love the visuals. However, I feel like the show was missing something and sometimes tried a little hard to prove something. It weren't too much time on the meaningless sex and not enough time on meaningful parts. I get we're suited to watch her grow, but the Tom showing up at the end like final boss she had to defeat was too on the nose.

I can definitely see that. And that's why I feel they should've dropped the episodes week to week. And maybe made it 10 or 12 episodes. If the last time we saw Tom was in episodes 3 and then he pops back up after a month worth of episodes, I think it would've still be on the nose. But it wouldn't have been so off putting.

I actually liked the series. Although it was rushed at times and many topics were covered at once, the focus on the generational trauma was the strongest part of the show. But from a production standpoint, it seems they probably didn't have the budget or writers of an show like insecure. However, the mental and emotional issues in this show were very needed to be discussed.

Hopefully, if it comes back for a second season, they get more time and more of a budget.

This show is awful. Mostly bc it has such a rough start. I’m on episode 4 and its all about her hooking up with guys. There is no substance in the first 3 episodes. Huge let down.

Why did you feel like the start was rough?
