You're missing the bigger picture here... Operation Mindcrime was a true "album", or what people today call a "concept album". If you listen to the entire album from beginning to end, it tells a story, like an audible movie... If y'all have the time, I HIGHLY recommend listening to the whole album from beginning to end in one sitting...

Seriously, you guys NEED TO (AS IN MUST, AS IN HAVE TO) listen to the album, reading the lyrics of each song along the way, in its entirety, from Anarchy X/Revolution Calling through to Eyes of a Stranger to fully appreciate what you just heard... Arley Simpson Absolutely, I would argue it's the greatest concept album in metal. Just the sheer passion and emotion-charged energy from beginning to end is absolutely incredible. It's one of those albums that needs to be listened uninterrupted until the end while also paying very close attention to the lyrics.

Ab-Dhul Alif Qadr Muhammad wouldn't really compare it to 1984, seeing as the story is entirely different. Basically a junkie gets hired as a hit man for a homicidal anarchist group. Falls in love with one of his targets, and runs away with her. At the end his former employer finds them, kills her, and sets him up to take the fall.

The only bad thing is that that they (George & Ryan) are not getting the full effect of this album without hearing the WHOLE thing. Queensryche’s Operation: Mindcrime is a concept album, based pretty tightly on the story of a heroin addict named Nikki who gets involved with a secret revolutionary organization run by a man known only as Dr. X. As the album opens, Nikki is in a psychiatric hospital with amnesia, but reports on television of political assassinations suddenly bring memories flooding back through the rest of the album. Controlled by his addiction, Nikki is put to use by Dr. X, but when he meets a prostitute-turned-nun named Sister Mary, he begins to question his actions. Seeing the threat, Dr. X orders him to kill Mary and the corrupt priest at her church. Nikki can’t go through with it, and tells Dr. X that he wants out, but Nikki is still controlled by his addiction. He returns to Mary only to find her dead and begins the rapid descent into insanity that lands us back at the beginning of the album.

Geoff Tate is amazing and vocal range isn't everything, but there are a few that have/had a 5 octave range like Warrel Dane(RIP) that are/were pretty amazing too. Warrel was also better when he was younger IDK if he quite had a 5 octave range later in his career, but in his later Sanctuary albums he could definitely hit high notes pretty well still, and maybe not as high but i think they sounded better and more powerful. Lesser known than Rob Halford and maybe King Diamond(who I guess is 4 octaves and 2 notes), IDK how many that know Warrel from Nevermore have heard much Sanctuary, I didn't really know about them until I randomly heard a song on Stingray on TV 3 years ago. Didn't realize it was Warrel until I heard the track Sanctuary on RU-vid, and it sounded more like his Nevermore voice. But they released 2 albums early on, you could tell his range was suffering their second album, a lot was drugs/alcohol related then he left for Nevermore until 2015 or so releasing 2 more albums, one a remake of their debut Refuge Denied if I have that right off the top of my head.
@brians1793
@brians1793 6 лет назад
I probably underestimate how rare a 4 octave range is though, a lot of it is just natural range where training can certainly help, but most will never get there. I've been wanting to get into training myself, back in HS I realized I can hit high notes naturally really well when I was trying to match Phil's high pitched notes in Cemetery Gates, I nailed them all pretty well. But I can't do it as well from years of smoking and drinking but quit smoking 3 years ago and don't really drink anymore, we'll see. I know I can hit the low-E on guitar, I think I could do 4 octaves but not necessarily well. But I suck at singing lol.

Operation: Mindcrime is an absolute CLASSIC, masterpiece of an album, top to bottom. You guys need to actually listen to it in its entirety as it is the very definition of a concept album. You simply cannot get the full effect of the story they are telling by listening to only a few tracks. That would be similar to reading Stephen King's IT by only choosing a few chapters - its just not right. :) And you absolutely won't get the entire story context at all. That said, "Eyes..." is one of the more "poppy", hook-laden tunes QR has ever done. "I Don't Believe In Love" is another and one of my personal favorites. And of course, "Suite Sister Mary" and "Mission" are must listen tracks from this album as well. Do yourselves a favor guys...listen to the ENTIRE Operation: Mindcrime from start to finish, especially with good headphones. You'll thank me for sure. :) cheers and rock on!

Actually, seeing live the all mindcrime in one shot was maybe one of the most intense live I experienced (very different from Motorhead live :))) But in the album version, Revolution Calling with its anarchy X intro is the acme of the album (just my point of view) ... A lot less mainstream than eyes of a stranger which is kind of FM rock oriented (and this sounds even more true listeningit now in 2018). The mission is second best ...

Guys, you gotta listen to this whole album! Playing "Eyes Of A Stranger" first is like skipping to the final scene of a movie. You need the context of the songs before this one. But, then again, it is an amazing song on it's own!

When this album came out, as soon as I heard the intro, I knew this was going to be epic. But after listening to the entire album the very first time, I think I ended up listening to it back-to-back-to-back at least 10 times in a row. The story line of Nikki, Sister Mary, and Dr. X is gripping. Anyway, I couldn't agree with you more about how this is like skipping to the final scene of a movie. I've seen Queensrÿche at least 8 times (one of those was during their "Livecrime" tour), and this was by far one of my top 5 concerts.

You can't really just listen to one song from this album. The album tells a story and each song is a chapter. You're missing it if you only listen to one song.

This album came out in 1988. I was turned onto it in 1990. At the time, I was a so-so metal guy. I remember hearing this album, and only liking a few songs here and there. Later, I noticed the songs actually weren't making much sense lyrically as individual songs, so I started reading the lyrics. That's when I realized it was a rock opera, not unlike the Who's 'Tommy,' or Pink Floyd's 'The Wall,' and decided to really follow along with the story. What happened next transformed my world. The affinity I share with this album has transcended 30 years, and is STILL my all-time favorite. I truly was inspired by the storyline, NOT the main plot about the homicidal main character Nikki, obviously, but rather to the peripheral commentary on the socio-political world around me. It forced me follow media with a more discerning eye, and challenged my religious beliefs. What's ironic about you guys joking about the 80's vibe of the music is that much of the album lyrically still holds up in today's climate. I can't tell you guys how much I appreciate watching YOU appreciate 'Eyes...', but the posts below are correct. You really have to listen to the whole album and follow the lyrics to take in the story to truly appreciate the concept. But thanks for this reaction vid! I love it!

Guys, it’s definitely 80’s LOL but that’s no issue. The issue is that you need to listen to the entire album and then feel the need to realize you have been blown away after listening to this Epic album. If you still feel like lumping it in 80’s music, saying the idea of it’s inability to be taking seriously as phenomenal art? Well, you have the freedom to feel that way for sure. So listen to the album and take in the lyrical content and let us know if it’s worthy of great music per your opinion 😊

Operation Mindcrime is basically a cinematic experience in audio. If you listen to the entire album in one sitting you feel that experience. Basically a story about a troubled youth addicted to drugs gets brainwashed into a government sanctioned hitman. This album tells from his origins to his death. So powerful. When an album meant something. Not a 99 cent download.

Operation: Mindcrime is an excellent concept album. It's like a dystopian science fiction story, set to music. It delves into the media controlling how people think, and power brokers calling the shots behind the veil of religion, business, and government. It's almost uncanny how on point it still is, considering what's going on today.
