I've given into temptation and ditched that bike gutter lane for the sidewalk more times than I'd like to admit. At least I ride at a slow speed so I know I'm not endangering a pedestrian.
Folding bike is an option here in the UK for transit. You can book a place for regular bikes on the train, but not busses. Some busses insist that the folded bike is bagged, some drivers don't care. Not knowing whether there will be a space or whether they will let you take your bike home is tricky. If you lock it it could be stolen, if you wait it could be sketchy. Could you ride it along the bus route and catch the bus further along? Would it be cheaper or are all tickets the same?
