Frequency kills me. I wanted to visit my cousin in Riverside. I live in LA county. There is no train going towards Riverside in the morning nor coming back to LA in the afternoon. It's against commuter traffic.
My SO and i went to Vegas the weekend the I15 was shut down due to a gigantic lithium fire. It took us over 12 hours to get there, and we saw tons of cars pulled over with cooked engines due to sitting in stopped traffic in 105° weather for hours. Glad y'all were able to get home safely, TEAM BUS
Also drove a $700 Volvo with a bad head gasket and a leaking heater core to and from Phoenix in July once. I had 3 milk jugs of water and I'd stop at fast food places along the way to fill them up with ice water, and pull over ever 15min when I burned though the gallon
Brightline is expected to cost $400? Good lord, how is it going to make any money ... at least from all those people with cars who don't have radiators that explode on them. When CAHSR finally gets going (sometime after the foundation of Starfleet maybe?) it's going to cost a mortgage payment to ride.
@@djpetesake Considering Brightline (east) has tickets from Miami to Orlando in the $50 range, which would absolutely be competitive with other forms of transit, seeing that $200 each way is a bit hard to swallow. I know BLW is going to be going at considerably more speed than BLE but still.
Aside from the radiator repair cost, the actual driving cost should be calculated using the current IRS mileage rate at $0.67/mile. That averages in the gas and repair cost, so closer to $300 if driving roundtrip to/from Riverside, CA.
I got that feeling of the strip being an abandoned place with you walking around in the morning with like no one around. The only time I've been in Vegas (over a decade ago), I had the buffet at the Rio and it was good
Pro tip: you can buy Residential fares on your phone, and they will be honored on the Strip bus too. Technically non-Nevada residents are supposed to pay the tourist fares, but literally nobody ever checks.

last summer my Jeep broke in colorado while pulling my camping trailer. had to rent a U-Haul for $1000 to tow the trailer back to San Diego. Then after a month of repairs I flew back to colorado to drive the Jeep home. They said exhaust system blew up causing $9k in damages. Sold the trailer and Jeep. Done with that and sticking to public transit!
I think you need to change your name to DJ Cheapskate, but I love the premise of this trip with everyone going to the same spot, with different methods. For me, I occasionally travel from Salinas to Ventura County to see my family, and truth be told driving is the most efficient for me because I can bring lots of TSA un-friendly items with me. That said, flying is nice for fast trips, although I am stuck bumming rides off friends/fam. Taking the train/bus is the WORST combo ever, mostly due to just how dang long it takes...
Also, $1300 for a new radiator, holy crap o.O! I fix my own car and I was able to replace the radiator in my 96 Civic for sub $100 with a good radiator + fresh coolant to top it off too!
Ima need more of your thoughts on the arrow line, especially the DMUs. I like the level boarding and seats, more cleaner than the older Metrolink fleet. Of course the bike racks are the dumbest thing about em
I have been enjoying your bicycle trip videos for a few weeks now. I did some bicycle camping 24 years ago when I was first retired at 57 years of age. I camped about five time along my route from the mouth of the Santa Ana River not far from my home, to the mouth of the Connecticut river, not far from where I was born. That's right, the whole country diagonally coast to coast, solo. Needless to say all my other camping was in motel rooms, or staying with friends and relatives along the way. The entire trip was about 2.5 months starting in May and did include some rather hot days. Arizona was the hottest, but the least comfortable was over 90F in the sweltering humidity of Upstate New York. I should mention that unlike your "beater cargo bike" that I do commend you for building and maintaining, I had my own modified version of a streamlined recumbent based on the Lightning Cycle Dynamics F-40. I am friends with the guy who builds them, but did buy only his frame kit. As you have done, I built my own wheels, and carrying 45 pounds of camping gear on a 45 lb. bicycle I chose to make the back wheel from a tandem rim and spokes. The routine on that trip when I finished an average of 57 miles for the day, was to ask for a room on ground floor, but at the top of the 7600 ft altitude New Mexico pass to Ruidoso, they had a split level, so I had to hoist that 90 lb. load down 5 steps. Next day was down hill to Roswell, and I spent two days since there was an aerospace museum honoring Robert Goddard inside their History museum. I left the UFO museum to the tourists who want to believe that aliens would even bother with this minor planet, or even exist contemporarily within living range of us. Why not spend much less money on restoring the Pacific Electric and its existing stations for the 2028 Olympics now? 😡 It took over 20 years to build a new metro system and stations. People could have been using the Pacific Electric for YEARS in the meantime.
La Verne will begin construction on a Pedestrian bridge over Arrow Hwy from the A line station to the Fairplex in the next year or so. Lessening your chances of getting hit by a car during the events at the fair :D
Do you not take the full lane when biking on a road with no bike lanes? Even though inconvenient for the drivers and I may get some honks, I just hate how close people pass
That destination sign to Irvine is really old and the IE OC line is much older than the 91 Perris line; that is, there were no trains to Los Angeles from La Sierra when it was installed.
