There are 2 reasons to have specific skills in the Proficiency line: first, so you can remember what you've already decided it's good at, and second, so you can know what it's not good at. Yeah, it can be done on the fly, but having it written down is one less thing to think about (and you do have to think about it, unlike "7d10+14 hp" or somesuch) and it doesn't prevent you from changing whatever that says on the fly anyway.
@TheDungeonCoach
@TheDungeonCoach 3 года назад
The time it takes me to think of if that would make sense for it to be good at or not is less time than it would take to look at that spot on the paper. That’s my reason, but if it’s useful for you, by all means do that! 👍🏼

I definitely need it. I sometimes prep loads in advance for when my players go somewhere unexpected.
@ondrejbronec837
@ondrejbronec837 3 года назад
For me, the thing is that skills are meant for PCs and do not work that great for monsters. To explain the same point in detail: PCs are proactive - "Will I be good at this thing if I try it?" is a principle they use to make a decision and they need to explicitly know what they are good at, hence the need for skill proficiencies. Monsters are reactive - "Is this something I am good at?" is what you will ask most of the time. You don´t really need to have a list of all of their proficiencies since you will not be looking through them like a PC would. What you need however is a perfect representation of the skill set of a particular monster in order to react to everything your players might come up with. That takes a lot of time and is sometimes extremely hard or even impossible. Take a normal guard captain. Will he be proficient in investigation? Well, let's say he is competent and does this his whole life - I think he should likely be proficient and maybe even get double his PB to investigation. Then your PCs come to him and cleverly use a high-level illusion spell and .... Well, this wasn´t really what you had in mind, he is good at looking for clues and etc, but lives in a town where magic is rare. How is it possible he sees through the illusion? Good DM will probably adjust his stats or just roll with it and defend to his players how is this guard captain able to roll 27 on his investigation roll. What if you add an illusionist archmage to the equation? How is it possible he is not even proficient? Just noting the PB avoids this whole problem and allows you to capture stuff like a monster being good in one part of a skill, but not as good in another. When the situation would come up you would just think about the captain and probably decide he does not understand magic that well, but you would give PB to the archmage. Vica versa if a body is found etc. The system is just sooo much cleaner.

@SteveVanderArk 3 года назад
@@ondrejbronec837 I agree. Skills are for PCs, not monsters. I don't need notes to remember what a monster is good at. It seems pretty obvious. And let's face it, it's not that often that you make a roll for something like that and can't tell immediately whether or not they succeed.

The only really good reason I know of regarding the purpose of creatures having certain skill proficiencies is with Druid’s Wild Shape. Being able to Wild Shape into a form with Perception, Athletics, or Stealth proficiency can be very helpful since you get their skill proficiencies but can use your proficiency bonus if higher (which it regularly will be at level 5 and up).

Similar to what I already do for shorthand. I often write out the full thing after if I have time. I often writhe things out on cards for quick reference If I feel its worth the effort of making a card. Things you use a lot like my Powerful skeleton or Guard are work writing out cards as they will be used many times. BUT ensuring you clearly list Proficiency bonus is important! And Yes just the ability score Modifiers most of the time!

I actually forgo using a proficiency bonus altogether on all my monsters. I've always used just the core modifiers (in the often case of my players trying something whacky like trying to grapple a werewolf). But for flavoring add a few skills for it to be good &/or bad at and use those unique modifiers whenever it would come up instead to further simplify any math, gives some creative freedom without needing to worry about scaling issues derived from a flat universal bonus; like a possessed knight armor I'd say has -10 stealth with a +5 acrobatics and +10 athletics, to make it hard to escape from but obvious where it is when the party is sneaking around a haunted castle, using the normal ability modifiers if they try other skill checks like bluffiing or distracting. One of the few oversimplifications I like about 5th edition is the default way they grouped up combat maneuvers by type, been using it ever since because man is that a time save when I don't need to check if something was a bonus action or not. Though I keep abbreviated labels on everything to keep from loosing context to random numbers.

@johnathanrhoades7751
@johnathanrhoades7751 3 года назад
My first campaign was adapted from 2e, so I started out the gate with basically this method. I generally simplify even more at this point and studied the design enough to be able to start on the fly for less important encounters. For keystone Encounters, I'll write this out, but a lot of it is "this wolf is pretty easy to hit with chunky hit points and is fast and my players are level 3" so that's 13ac 40hp and 40ms. +6 to hit feels good, pack tactics and they're sneaky or strong or perceptive or whatever. It just makes running a combat so much smoother for me having internalized the rules of the system vs having to check stat sheets. Now, big important or particularly interesting combats I write more down. I also think in 4e combat roles and use Matt Coleville's concept of villain actions to make more engaging fights as well.

@17joren
@17joren 3 года назад
Great advice as always, broham! I would however recommend still going through the time of writing the ability scores just for the sake of abilities that directly relate to them. Or at least when you know there is a pc like inquisitive (or mastermind?) rogue who can read the opponent for that info, or there’s an ability that drains or boosts a score. Intellect devourers drain intelligence, some undead drain strength. The meenlock was nerfed in this edition so I would give them their 3.5 ability to basically cast phantasmal force (rend mind) but deal wisdom damage instead of hitpoints. I know that if you’re having NPCs fight each other, you don’t need to roll it out and do all the side crunching, just describe their fight to the players, but who knows if you decide to homebrew abilities for the PCs?

I usually have no problem homebrewing creatures and abilities, but I cannot bring myself to add save or suck abilities that don't at least give the player a chance every round to get out of it. Specifically, I'm talking about an ability like the Banshee's Wail which instantly drops players to 0 HP if they fail a Constitution saving throw. If it wasn't an officially published ability, I swear my players would complain that it's bullshit. The Banish spell is another example, but at least that one has some counterplay where you could try to break the creature's concentration... until you give the monster something like +10 to Constitution saving throws and the War Caster feat for advantage... How do you balance stuff like that and present it to your players in a way where they won't think you're being unfair to them?
@DanielVogelsong
@DanielVogelsong 3 года назад
Here's a question - how do you store these for reference later? Are they in a binder, in individual files, in a spreadsheet, on a database? I personally use Encounters by Heromuster, but like most other tools I've seen, there's no easy way to export them to cut out the cruft and add blank space, as you've shown in this video.

@SteveVanderArk

I do this on 3X5 cards. My shorthand looks almost exactly like yours! For spellcasters, I list the spells that they actually will use. Let's face it, some spellcaster types have far more spells than they will ever use in combat. Since most combat encounters don't last more than 4-5 rounds, you just need a half dozen spells listed. For any saving throws, I just write "STR 13" or whatever. I know that means a Strength saving throw with a DC of 13. And one more thing which REALLY helped me out when I realized it: NPCs and monsters are NOT player characters and they don't have to follow player character rules when you create them. Don't waste time working out the math on things, just give them the AC or HP or "to hit" or whatever that you think they should have.
@Arekkusu666

I've seen tons of videos on homebrewed monsters, and monsters are awesome. But what about a rival adventuring party for the players? Or other NPCs that have class levels, or function similar to a specific class? Is there an easy method for doing that? Because building an NPC using actual player classes will make the rival adventurers or other baddie not as strong as they should be, especially if there's supposed to be conflict between them and the party.

I have always struggled with how much damage and health my monsters should have. To use standard monsters they either get to live and one shot my players or die really fast and my players live. But I have since started using a new system. Because I deal better with formulas rather than guessing I take average damage from all my players and then decide about how long I would like the creature to live and set that as its health. Then I take average HP for my players and decide how many hits it should take for them to die and that would be my average damage. I can use this to run however many monsters with whatever attacks I want. It has really freed up my brain space for planning creatures.

Based in the wording on your home brew templates it seems that the multi attack applies to a plethora of things. In RAW, the monsters state what two attacks can be made. Does your “two attacks” mean it can make two fist attacks, or two grapple attacks? I know it can be modified easily to state WHAT two attacks the great ape can make, I was just wondering your thought process since it isn’t being explicitly said which two attacks said monster can make. Edit: typed this while watching. You explained it a few minutes later. Guess I shouldn’t jump the gun lol.

I like to create my own monsters since I am not a big fan of the D&D world, so I pieced together the same thing in Google docs. It is kind of annoying that WoTC must have developed a template for that, it would be easy to supply a blank for us to scan and use. I like the MM template layout as it helps my eyes go right to what I am looking for but I agree there is definitely more information than is needed. I think the stripped down would be hard for me to navigate for any more complicated monsters like a Cloud Giant or Dragon. Do you use this version for those?

How do you handle spells or creatures with a lot of different abilities?

a boss level creature or recurring antagonist: they may get their own fully completed character sheet. example: 12 level wizard due to options for spells, magic items, locations, minions, allies, enemies... this antagonist will get a full character creation to include the motivation and goals. the more you know about the antagonists plot, the easier it is to improv events from the adventurers efforts to thwart your epic story... because that's what players do to any epic story! then you look like a genius when the story is fully revealed and the players have that sense of accomplishment.

Dungeon Coach, you need to looked at D&D 3.5E because you keep creating homebrew rules and/or referring to Pathfinder rules that were originally in D&D 3.5E, such as damage resistance X amount. The point of 5E was to make things simpler from past editions and it seems like some of your homebrew rules are reverting back to what was in previous editions. For example, instead of a creature having 10 resistance to fire and 20 vulnerable to necrotic damage, 5E just has a flat half damage resistance or double damage for vulnerability. As someone who has played every edition since Basic/AD&D, 5E was a very nice change -- Advantage/Disadvantage was much easier than adding up all the bonus modifiers in a given situation, like attacking someone who's prone (3.5 had three AC types -- normal, flat-flooted (no Dex bonus), and touch (for touch attacks that ignore armour).

I do keep getting told this! Maybe I should’ve been around for 3.5! Once I can get some time I’ll have to dive through that real book!

@@TheDungeonCoach Definitely since 3.5E was the foundation of Pathfinder 1.0 (which some call it D&D 3.75E). I don't miss 3.5E's complex skill and feat trees -- I was reminded of this when I played the CRPG Pathfinder: Kingmaker.

Congrats bud, you've done the barest minimum of prep work. I already know what my monsters are before hand and only keep track of hp, everything else I have committed to memory, cause I actually prep for the comeing session. So none of this matters, I just have a letter for the monsters name and a number for which monster it is and a bracket of added up damage, ✅

Sorry dude but you’ve barely removed or changed anything, other than minor omissions from the stat block.
