I remember my mom saying “ok, I’ve got it” to our GSD when I was a kid in the 70s. He would walk away and come sit by her side. She passed away 10 years ago, so thank you for going through the steps to get there. My puppy needs it!
This is nutz Joel! I have been doing this with my shepherd, catching her before she escalates and having her come immediately to me~and sometimes I treat her or sometimes we go into a mini mini training mode, sit, stay, down, good girl! When someone is at the door I can get her to run immediately to me (joyfully!) or sometimes she will bark at something in the front yard and I look at her and say "There's nobody out there!" and she is satisfied with that. @jclorden yes. Doorbells are really tough. I occasionally look after a large lab that lives in the country. When he first came he barked wildly at everything including people getting into or out of cars a block away. His owner does want him to alert her when someone comes on the yard. I had to find a way to let him alert me or the owner and then stop. Before seeing any videos, I decided to acknowledge, thank him and then have him quiet down. It worked quite well. Doorbells are beyond me as he cannot understand that I do not need to be alerted to doorbells on TV. I wonder if I should just accept alerts about all doorbells including on TV. It would be very helpful to see what Beckman suggests.
I like that this method doesn't surpress the barking altogether. I feel like my dog wants to alert me to something (most of the time) when he barks so this allows him to accomplish his 'mission' and then stand down. Have you ever noticed that your dog will bark and keep looking over at you? I have.
Oh yes it works. My dobe barks at the window and goes crazy everything that walks by. I’ve been acknowledging “I see it” then happy voice walk into the kitchen for a treat. She now barks but stops after “I see it” and comes to get me! It’s fantastic. Thank you🐾
April 6th: Thank you!! My puppy is (I think) going through a fear stage; she's like a different pup. She barks aggressively at stuff she never even noticed before. Have been doing this method for 2 days and she's much better. She also seems less fearful overall. Have yet to phase out "I see it" and treats but I think that will come. April 8th: better and better. Rarely have to give treats anymore and it's improved her "come". She often looks at me and comes without my asking. She is a SUPER alert, focused, and energetic puppy. It took a lot of work to get here, with more work still needed. Well worth it though.
We have been doing this (per another trainer) with our very vocal Beagle mix, and it really does work. It takes time and consistency, but very much worth the effort!
I’m a dog trainer and this is almost the exact same thing I tell my clients to do with an alert or protection barker. If you’d dog is barking as a protection why in the world would anyone correct or punish for that? Instead, like Joel said, go to the window, assess the situation, I always throw in a good girl or good boy and I got it and I say ok go lay down or go to your place. Yes it totally works! In fact I just did it right now with my own dog.
Works like a charm! My dog is a rescue and has ataxia. I thought that before he learns, he will have diarrhoea from the treats. Butno, after 4 th attempt, he switched and came running...wow. thankyou so much for this!!
I’ve been using this method for my 10 month Giant Schnauzer puppy since he was about 8 months and it worked! Instead of “I see it,” I say “thank you,” and I’d redirect him and then reward him. Now he may do a small bark and then look at me to make sure that I am aware and it only took about 2 weeks to phase out of the treats!
@@wren1024 he definitely is right! Since you’re familiar with the schnauzer family, you can only imagine how the Giants are! I’m glad that I worked my puppy through the barking and we were able to be on the same page. I’m also glad to read that you were able to use this method for your standard and mini! I absolutely love the obedience and intelligence of schnauzers.
Glad I found this. our 5 month GSD has found his voice, and wants to be sure everyone knows he's there. I'll start working with this and see if we can cut that off. He will bark when we let him out just to let people know he's outside, and then anyone that walks by is made aware too. It's aggravating, and he's VERY stubborn, so hopefully it will work. We plan on doing some training with you when he's a bit older, so the videos you share with us are extremely helpful. Thank you!
I am a dog Trainer and i like to watch dog trainer’s videos. It helps me with my tools and other ideas to train dogs. I have tried it and it works. I have to say one have to be consistent, and soft on the voice to acknowledge the situation the dog is baking at. It will slow down their barking but it will never stop completely. Besides one does not want that. Owners want the dog to let you know when it is a stranger out there. Thank you.
It’s my next door neighbors dog that CONSTANTLY barks, even in the middle of the night, super frustrating. I always get up to look and acknowledge what my dog is alerting me too. It’s nice to know you do this too! I use affection but I love this idea! Wish I could do this at the neighbors 😂 I’m fortunate that my dog hardly ever barks, if he does, you can be certain, it’s for a good reason.
Im in the same boat. I love my neighbours dogs. They are lovely well loved and gentle. However they are both herding dogs with nothing to herd aaaaand are pretty chatty. Ive checked with the neighbours to see if I can give treats and this has helped a lot.

For over a year, every day I noticed there was dog poop in the corner of my front yard and I couldn’t figure out where it was coming from until, one morning when I was up early around 5:30 AM, I saw a little dog crapping in my yard. I waited inside and watched to see where it went as I knew this dog was the culprit because it was in the same location and it looked the same. My next door neighbor (had been living there a year, so the timeline fits too) was out on her front porch but on all three sides of her porch, she hides behind these bamboo shades so she had been letting her dog out every morning to come over to my yard and take a crap and then she would let it back into her house. I politely walked over to introduce myself and let her know that her dog had been using my yard to defecate. I could not have been more friendly as the last thing I want is a dispute with people living in close proximity to me. So I introduced myself and not only did she completely ignore me I mean it’s like she turned into Helen Keller and couldn’t see or hear me. Just acted like I wasn’t even there and then rammed my shoulder with her shoulder and bumped me to walk past. Their dog barks constantly all through the night and they could care less. Every single time we walk up or down our driveway, their dog barks. It barks at anything and everything and it never stops. I realize I could try to file a report with animal control that when I inquired about it it seemed hopeless. It’s a lot of paperwork, then they have 30 days to “try“ and remedy the situation and from there they “might“ be cited with a ticket. Basically, these are the kind of people I prefer to steer clear of and just not engage with at all. Anyway, it sounds like your situation is improving which is great!. 😊 Sorry for the long winded response.
@@KingsMom831 I take off my hat to you - staying so calm . One of my mom’s neighbours in the uk let her dog defecate on the other neighbours front lawn - this lady was a new neighbour . The third day it happened - by now my mom’s neighbour was watching for it and took a photo from her front window of the dog pooping and the owner looking away then walking away with out picking it up . Well my mom’s neighbour went out side picked up the poop in a bag waked over to this new lady knocked on her door and handed her the bag of poop . There were some firm words I am sure - she ended by saying if this happened again she will be returning the poop through the mail slot in the front door . Return to sender . Anyway that was the last of the problem .Myself had a similar problem when I went to mow the grass in the ditch outside my property and found about 20 piles of dog crap right beside the neighbor’s drive way. So they were letting their dog out to poop right there . So I went over and politely told them i needed to mow the grass but we have a bit of a problem - someone had allowed their dog to use this area as a toilet - its likely the same owner/dog bec the feces is identical . At no point did I insinuate it was them . Instead I told them i am worried about their car parked on the driveway because once I start to mow , the blade with pick up all that crap and send it hurtling in all directions and it may hit their car . I also mentioned my disbelief that some one would be so inconsiderate and unhygenic to not pick up after their dog and they mumbled in agreement .They were very appreciative of my concern - moved the car while I did the mowing . And 2 weeks later when I went back to mow - not one dog turd . Problem solved amicably . Hopefully they are not just taking the dog over the other side to poop on the other neighbours boundary .
I had a neighbor flat out lie and said the dogs belong to the neighbors next to me...and I'm like "Nope, I know their dogs". Keep insisting and months later they admitted to my mom the dogs belong to them. And I'm like..."Yep, I knew it". Maybe they should get rid of the big "WELCOME" sign next to their front house door. SMH.
I used to do this with my cattle/mastiff! As soon as I said "yep! I know. Thank you" she would make eye contact with me, then go lay down. Very protective of my family.
I had been doing the first half of this and it helped a little, but not fully... so today I will try the whole thing...I think it will definitely work! nice to know i was on the right track and now have the missing piece. Thanks!

My daughter and her husband did essentially this years ago. Worked great. Their BRT has aBIG voice so it was important. Also they taught her to bark on command with treats. Finally, they taught her to woof, once, for ‘yes’ in response to their question ‘do you want yo go for a walk?’
I do it a little different and I have 100% success. I get between what the dog is barking at and the dog and tell them that it is mine, I walk into the dog backing them away thus creating distance between what they are barking at until they go into a sit and then I praise. After awhile all I have to do is say it is mine and they take my word for it and stop barking. I know that dogs aren't suppose to be able to generalize but the "its mine" seems to work in a lot of scenarios other then a passer by or critter running through the yard. For what it is worth.
Yes, I use this with my dog. I say "OHHH, yeaaa, I see that!" "Yup" "okay" a gentle pat/rub on her side or on her chest below her neck. I ALWAYS say "Thank You" and she goes quiet.. well it's now she just lets out a "woof woof" and I check the window or door, "Yup, thank you".. It stops immediately. So easy. But I take her seriously, I WANT her to guard, She's a Bouvier- it's HER Job. You can't be a lazy bone and sit and yell their name and "shuddup!", They think you are a lazy bone big mouth barker who wont Check it out.. Even if you know it's only the neighbor's car door and he's home from work. Get up and look in that direction and aknowledge your dog.
I have a 1 yr old heeler that barks at me in the living room. I've tried everything from ignoring, water bottle, beep collar. Beep collar works but I don't like having to depend upon a device and I feel it creates a disconnect. After watching this video I tried "I see you" as a response to his barking and it worked. Will try again later in the day to see if it just wasn't a fluke-we did just hike 6 miles. I had two dogs years ago in a busy neighborhood. We did similar method-I didn't do the critical part of "I see it", so we had dogs that loved to bark in the yard to get treats. Or so it seemed. It was an endless cycle of go crazy in yard, come into the house for a treat... They had us well trained.
My family and I did this and it has all but eliminated the problem. Though, we didn't use treats. Honestly, just calmly saying thank you confused them enough to stop and look at us since before that it turned into a yelling match between us and the dogs. So we say thank you and we give them a "good dog" once they're quiet and have stepped away from the door. It seems to make them happy, like they've done a good job. Now there are times when a delivery man or the mailman can come up to our door and leave and they don't even notice. Or a car door slams and they just look up, maybe bark once, but don't get stupidly excited.
It works! I've been doing this with my GSD since he was a puppy. It's important to clearly "take over" the responsibility of the situation. Do it with your presence.
I've been doing something very similar for my dog. He still barks at the door in a protective way, but once I tell him - hey, quiet. He stops comes to me and I reward. And he doesn't go back to the door unless there are some really loud neighbors in our apartment building right at our door. But at first I redirected him to his bed and only when he is calm I gave him a treat and praised him. Now I don't always treat him and he still doesn't return. So I guess it works. He is a protective dog, it's part of his breed, but with this at least I can stop the barking after a few barks. I'm fine with him protecting the house, but I wish he wouldn't bark from the inside of the car at ppl or dogs he sees. I think he thinks the car is his teritory too. Haven't figured how to stop that, since it's hard to correct a dog in the car.
I’m going to try this, there’s a dog door that leds out to the balcony that overlooks the main road, so there’s a tonne of people just walking by, cycling, walking dogs etc. I used to just call their names ( 2 Maltese doggies) and then bring them inside (picking them up). Usually they would ignore the recall or just continue barking like crazy at the people. I will use this method and hopefully I can fix this. Wish me luck 🤞
Oh man, thank you, this is something I really gonna use. I mentioned in another comment that my dog flips out when the doorbell is ringing or when something's happening outside the house. He's not flipping out on people, we trained him to be OK with visitors, somtimes our friends who are also our neighbours just walk in when they come over for a drink or dinner, he will go over and greet them because he knows them and so do they but nothing crazy. However, when someone rings the doorbell or the delivery guy drops a parcel at our door he freaks out. It's a different thing if someones ringing the bell and you go and open it, in that case you can just get him on leash and make hin stay or whatever but there's a lot of situations where something just happens outside and I have to do something.
This technique works. I’ve done the same by trial and error. Only difference, my voice goes very low, almost a whisper. Thus, the dog is responding by redirecting, listening, then treat until the treat phase is traded out, often using simple touch affection as reward. The next step dog learns this means, come here, away from window ....

He is not raised well and I work with him in your kind of spirit as I have the same way of thinking when it comes to dogs. Don't know if my methods are right or wrong but it works. I sit out side and when they go to bark at a dog or person i say no firmly, if they continue i walk up tell them no firmly and push them away from the fence and let them know the fence is my territory, it took about 5,6 times now i don't have to say anything most of the time and when i do say something its just no and they stop. But thank you for your videos, they do help. I don't do treats period
Hoping this helps my dog with barking at everyone on our walk. I am realizing I need to keep it positive, match his energy level and keep him moving instead of trying to quiet him which just makes him bark more.
My adolescent dog started doing this. We've tried this method as well as the engage-disengage game. With this method, she'd come with me but the moment she takes the treat, she might run back there to bark. Or sometimes she's so worked up barking that she keeps barking even when we move away from the stimulus. Same issue with ppl knocking on the door (so we are desensitising by knocking on everything and treating calmness), but she might bark the moment she hears a knock from wherever she is and just loses it for a bit.
i did this years ago with my golden…my husband traveled alot, i didn’t want to stop intruder alert, soi taught him to bark ob command, then quiet on command, and added its ok, i see it, now quiet, treat reward. one time a landscape guy came through the gate, my dog went ballistic barking, i walked out to see the guy frozen in place…i said it’s ok, quiet, my dog changed to calm like turning off the switch, tail wagging he went up for a pet…. this completely works, but you have to do the work training all the steps…then you’re really having a conversation with your dog.
i'm a professional housesitter, and recently starting babysitting a dog who is a HUGE barker at things outside, and very hard to distract from barking. will definitely try this method next time i babysit him. thanks!
I have heard something similar to this and I really like this idea LOL I will try it. I am the new manager at the Littlefield motel in North West Texas and I don't want my dogs disturbing the people that come to rent rooms
Timing is everything! It is best to set it up and preemptively stop the bark before it begins, you can see it building at the alert ears or shifting body positions, these and many more cues are given before a behavior begins and that is when and where the stop needs to occur. Waiting means you have to fight the existing learned behavior or you can stop it before it starts.
We definitely don't want a constant barking dog. We still want them to bark at the right time. Like when an intruder is lurking. If your dog needs something, like to come inside, I accept just the one or two notification barks. Hey it's me outside..... it's dinner time. But all in all there's nothing worse than a non stop barking dog. A lot of barking dogs, simply bark because the owners haven't taught their pups from the get go, that it's not ok.
when we lived in an apartment for the first time during 2020, the dog never barked for any reason for about 4 months. Then one day the census ppl started putting out flyers and he barked to let us know. I got up and loved him and praised him for the alert. I think it's a positive behavior!
I just came back to the video to see If I did something wrong because the progress stagnates for weeks now and behold I did something wrong. I started with just the acknowledging cue and treats, but without going to the dog first. So I already started a fadeout-step no 1. But still, all our dogs now have a solid cue which will get them out of the bark after 1-6 times barking, where before it was a mess. But its stuck there, which is why I came back. So now I will do it right and im very optimistic. Btw, the main dog which is trained is only 6 month old, so he still has time to adapt anyway. Both adult ones are way better then him as expected. Most of the time they are already standing there expecting treats why the jungest still barks which is awesome.
This makes me feel better that I'm not checking the door for no reason now. I halfway thought I was renforcing the barking maybe by checking and telling them nothing there, I just need to bring in the treat. Now I have to work with the kennel barker, tho it's mostly when he is excited because he knows it's time to come out of the kennel.
Marking the bad behavior basically. I do it slightly different but it definitely does work well. If you establish the marker really good, it'll work for basically anything else the same way. Even fence fighting depending on the situation.
Another great video. Quick question, if I get the dog to come away from the window and give a treat but then he goes back to the window to bark, do i just continue to bring him away and give treats until the barking stops?
I even tried this in the yard and it began to work. How crazy! I have to try it when people come over but I tried it when they barked at something in the window and they totally went for a liver treat me and my mom made. Wow!
Good video! Sort of what I did/do with my Aussie/Lab mix (now at 15 months of age). He still barks to alert but stops when told to do so. He barks when startled, otherwise, he growls to alert. I like the alert, as my hearing isn't what it used to be. Thanks for the video.
We do this with our Great Pyrenees. We acknowledge him barking, calmly say "It's just a neighbour/kid/car/passing GPS satellite..." and treat him away from where he was barking. Doesn't work 100% but he is a Pyr!

I say "Thank you. Quiet." And this works with alert barking i.e. knocking, doorbell. But my malinios is territorial and won't let up if someone comes to visit. I typically end up putting her up when someone needs to come into the house. She is fine outside and on walks and usually sociable with all kinds of people. She just doesn't want anyone in our house.
I have a similar issue with my 10 month Giant Schnauzer. He doesn’t like others (some family he hasn’t met yet/friends) getting into the car and would start excessively barking. Something that I do is hug them to show him that I feel safe around them. For those moments where he doesn’t care and continues to bark... I connect his leash and let him out the car to slowly sniff the person out. Then I’ll let the person go into the passenger seat first and then let him into the car. He becomes more calm and stops barking. I’m not sure if my method can help but it might be worth a try! Good luck!
@@danyelg.6890 I've tried the hugging thing. It doesn't usually work (probably help though) and I've tried walking her in and out of the room to get her to calm down. So far my best effort has been to put her in backyard and let her after I've allowed my guest in. Though again that doesn't always work.
Have you thought about greeting guests outside? Leash the dog and walk outside to say hello (you did say outside is no problem?) Maybe even let guest give the dog a treat. Then guest in first and she goes last. After that works maybe just greeting right in front of the door and so on ... Till it's resolved

We have a bike path in front of our house and constant joggers, walkers, biking.....Trying this immediately! I'm working on the bed thing....so so so far but we keep at it...I have a 11 month old mini aussie..
Your methods are always helpful. Do you have any idea to stop the dog from eating poop?🤣 My 5 months old puppy likes to eat poop. She knows leave it, so she won’t eat when we’re watching her. But when she’s alone in the backyard or she notices no one is watching her, she will definitely go for it. HELP!!

SO HELPFUL! however, my dog seems to bark more intensely (almost like she can't help herself) when I'm at a restaurant and people or dogs walk by. Is this fence fighting? She's not fighting but alerting and seems scared
That's what I do! My dog barks at something I'm not expecting, I get up and check it out, then tell her she's good. Usually if it's not someone at the door for us, it's just the neighbor kid came a little close to our apartment door.
My dog, I think has fence barking issues inside the house. Hackles up and nip me once because I try grabbing the collar. I believe you call that transfer aggression.
This method seemed to work for me indoors but at times when I have to leave my doberman in the backyard and i'm inside she barks at anything and everything(mostly noises behind our wall coming from the front yard). This is an issue because I work from my home office on the second floor of my house so I find myself having to fly down the stairs every 30 minutes to run outside and get her to stop. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated and thank you for all the wisdom you provide on your platform! Edit: also worth noting that she does stop alerting as soon as i go out and acknowledge. The issue is she alerts at EVERYTHING and this especially becomes an issue at night as I am surrounded by neighbors and i'm sure they're fed up lol.
Hello mate! Awesome content as usual 👍 I do have a question on that method, is there a possibility that some dogs may think that they are being rewarded for the barking and therefore bark at the door knowing that this behaviour predicts your attention and a treat?
I don’t think the point of this method is to necessarily eliminate the barking all together (as many of us want our dogs to alert us) but to stop the barking on command. Over time, I imagine that some more sophisticated dogs will realize, okay Daddy never cares about the squirrel and then stop barking at it all together but high guard dogs (like my Pibble) will probably never stop barking at the squirrel 😄 However, the “okay, I see it” should get her to calm down and refocus on something different … like the leaf blowing down the street lol j/k

Great videos! Is there a video or can you make one for dogs that bark within the car. My Shepard mix rescue barks at dogs outside the car, people and people in their cars at stop signs. I am focused on driving and then the dog lets out a horrific bark scaring me to death ( slight exaggeration!) 😬😳
I do the exact same thing...except the treat part! My boxer Java still barks at every delivery truck that just goes down the street. I'll start adding treats and see how it goes.
This is very helpful for crate barking but our dog barks when she wants things. For example if our older dog has a toy she wants or is laying in her bed she barks. This dog has the most hideous bark I have ever heard. It’s like fingernail on a black board. Do you have any suggestions?
Gonna give this a go for sure. I like that my dog wants to protect the home but when hes protecting the home against the neighbour on the phone it gets irritating 😂
I've been trying something similar, my puppy is super barky and huffy at EVERYONE and everything. Way over the top and this is an interesting strategy. One thing I notice immediately is that my puppy might come away but still be focusing and barking or huffing and sneezing even with the "thing" out of sight. Would we still treat a short distance away or is there a better way to respond if the worked up behavior persists? The only other option I can think of is to keep adding distance until the dog chills, and then proceed to step #2 and treat
Our back deck overlooks a reserve people walk along. We have 3 dogs. I will say "its ok they are allowed there" or similar then clap and give a treat. Now I will clap and they will mostly stop, tho we do have 1 Pomeranian who is a bit more yappy. But he will stop when I tell him "ok that's enough" calmly. Problem is tho I live with my parents and my father is old school, he will shout at them to shut up, They see it as him joining in barking with them so keep going and makes him shout more. We have tried telling him to do it our way but he see's the giving treats as rewarding them for barking so refuses. Lucky the dogs still listen to the rest of us and so we try and catch it before Dad starts.
What can I do if a dog (not mine) is barking at me through a fence and the owner doesn't care? I can't change directions or stop. Do I mark? Do I say go?

@Beckman's Dog Training Thank you for the teaching. We have a GS who barks a lot. The problem is that we have a large property so when he barks and we try to approach him to get his attention he just runs away (he's fast!😁) either playfully (we can tell by his body language) or like "Whatever. I'm not listening to you". I will calmly follow him around until I get him but then is any correction effective?
