Lost count of how many 'tape measure' wheel alignments we did in 10 years of amateur rallying 🙂 Using factory steering components for terrain that would scare most 4wd owners certainly tested the upper limits of the engineering margins 😁 I was often surprised to find out how close we'd got to zero toe with the tape, after checking it out at work following the events 👍

The real question is... what are the plans for that CRX ;-)
@hpa101
@hpa101 2 года назад
Great question! Ben has been out of the car for 2 or so years after bumping his head, and the SR86 is a little intimidating for him to just jump in now, so he's going to do the 1 hour in the CRX, and then him and Andre might do a 3 hour together in it as well. It's a little rougher than anticipated but time is pretty short here so just trying to do the minimum to be happy with it for this season. Ben has done 120 or so laps in it and so far so good, mostly 😎 I'm sure it will pop up in more content once it's been tidied up a little. It's K swapped, NA 250hp running an EMtron - Taz.

Off topic a little bit but that stiction of suspension joints particularly spherical bearing and heim joints that are metal to metal contact tend to make a small amount of noise do use any lubricant to stop them squeaking and ticking

Links to example string alignment systems, as well as wheel weight would've been nice.

How easy would it be for the hub stands to roll off the pads and come crashing down?

Hard due to the lip. Like anything, if that was your dream and you worked to make that happen I'm sure you could....but why you would I do not know 😂 On a serious note though, if you have all the same equipment we do and are not comfortable using it how we do, don't 🧠 - Taz.

This is a very real risk. If you are performing your alignment on turn one at Talladega.
@hpa101

haha yes we definitely wouldn't be doing this on a lean with or without the scales involvement! Just in case I came off a little strong above, safety is important and you shouldn't ever assume something is good just because someone else said it was. Check to make sure your car is secure before working on it no matter your setup. An extra 1-3 mins making sure you're happy is better than being squished, and a healthy fear of that happening is good to make sure you don't do anything dumb 🤘 - Taz.

That’s funny seen a old method my grandfather and my father used. Strings and measuring tapes or tram gauges. If done right by a profession person it is just as accurate as the $50,000 laser machine
@hpa101
@hpa101 2 года назад
One of the great things about this system is that even if you aren't a professional and are still learning, it is easy to tell if something is wrong. If you have a string in the wrong place, you can check and see, then fix! If you're $50k alignment machine is off, you cannot tell without using other equipment to check, and you cannot fix the issue yourself. This is why simple systems like this are still popular even at high levels of motorsport and why when you're a grandfather I'm confident you will still see people with string alignment systems in the paddock on race weekend 😎 - Taz.

@@hpa101 Yes I was taught the old fashion way using a string and measuring and tram gauge. And through the decades always used hunter or beer light a line when it first came out and then the laser line when it first came out. And now I get to use the most expensive exotic machines in other shop owners businesses when I need my own alignment done I have every piece of equipment at the tips of my fingers and the one thing I noticed all this automated computer control tell the technician what to do next dumb down to technicians they don’t know what they’re doing and when anything is wrong they don’t even know it’s wrong and they don’t know how to fix it. Welcome to the new dumb down education of American mindless robots 🤖

It's the same everywhere, it's part of technological advancement for better or worse. I mean I couldn't build the computer I'm using but I (allegedly 😂) know how to use it relevant to my job right? Same with many other day to day items. Just part of where we are at as a society with technology. Although while I don't think it's required to need to build your own computer to use one by my line in the sand, I do think you are correct and to use an alignment machine you should understand the fundamentals of the changes you're making rather than just mindlessly doing what the readout states not even having the knowledge to know if it's wrong. It's hard to train people to care though no matter where your finger points in blame on that one though! My whinge for the week haha, cheers for the chat and I hope you enjoy the weekend 😎 - Taz.
