This video shows how to disengage and reengage a Genie automatic garage door opener. I couldn't find any directions or helpful RU-vid videos that were specific to my PMX500IC/B opener. This trick works!
Instructions online and in the manual were sparse at the very most. We kept thinking all we needed to do was to yank the rope toward the door (or the other way, if you read the unhelpful Genie instructions). As soon as you moved the carriage, it was clear what our issue was and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for showing us how to get things re-aligned. Signed, 2 70-year-old engineers LOL.
I am a 41 year old first time home owner and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart because my male fragility was in top form over here. You saved me both money and shame. I appreciate you! 😂🙌🏼
We looked up manuals, men telling us on RU-vid and none of it made sense nor worked. But you my friend told me very simply and plainly how to do it 👏👏👏 Sincere thanks 😊
Me and my dad were just sitting in my garage dealing with this issue. I begged him to let me open RU-vid and 10 minutes later you had helped us fix our problem. Thank you thank you thank you x100000000000!
Thank you for this video! There's usually some guy explaining this kind of stuff and I think it's the coolest thing to see a young woman telling us how to fix something. And I just went and fixed my garage door, thanks!!
You are the true hero of garage door opener repair. After watching multiple other videos my door still wasn’t working but you had the answer. Thank you so much!
I am an 85 year old widow and want to thank you so much. After disengaging my opener due to a storm outage, I just could not fix my door. Your video was exactly what I needed. Thank you so much!!!
Genie should be ashamed of themselves for not putting clearer instructions on how to re-engage the door. I tried all sorts of things and luckily found your video. While my door is a bit different, I saw what I had to do and it worked. Can't thank you enough!
Thanks a million for this video! Following the instructions that I had weren't all that helpful, but you showed what the exact problem was and how to fix it. You saved me some serious money here!
Your video was the third one I watched and guess what at 3:02 I paused the video, stood up and managed to "fix" my garage motor to re-engage. You are a genius!!!! As a woman I feel so good, thanks to you😍🤩😘
You're awesome! Thank you so much for the video! I love when people help people with common things like this. After watching several videos that told me I should be yanking back and up on the cord, your video was the actual fix. Who would have thought it was a simple as gently pulling down to make sure that piece locked in place. THANK YOU!!
I am mechanically challenged! My power went out this morning, and I was able to disengage the door and get my car out and shut the door again but couldn't get it to re-engage when I got home. Even had my son on facetime with no luck. YOUR video helped me fix it. Thanks so much
Thank you so much!! This is a terrific video, explaining easily what I couldn't get from dozens of other videos. I watched this video once and went out and fixed my garage door opener. You're the best!!!
You saved the day and a service call. My parents power went off and their door became disengaged after a manual pull. My Dad is 78 and terminally ill and was trying to fix it this morning. I came over to help and said let me check RU-vid for a tutorial- sure enough and it worked . Thank you so much.
Was on the verge of paying a professional to fix it, until I saw your video, and I fixed it within minutes. Thank you so much. Prior to yours I had watched multiple videos, and none of them worked.
BLESS YOU!!! i ran into same thing you did!! Im keeping this for emergency if I need to get out. Or, will test it if someone comes here who can help if needed. Im older woman with medical conditions. THANK YOU so much!!
Adding to the many glowing comments - I searched the internet high and low, read the Genie manual and THIS was the thing that helped me "fix" my garage door!! Thank you, thank you! You easily saved us $200 for a handyperson to show up and do 3 minutes of work.
Thank you so much for posting this video! You saved me so much time. Luckily, I found it after only watching two other videos with no success. Thank you, thank you thank you!
Great explanation! Mine was jammed and would never had known to shove a piece of wood into it to unjam it if you didn’t show me exactly how it is supposed to work. Thank you.
Your video saved me time, money and my sanity. I could not figure out what I was doing wrong. I watched several videos, none of them helped, watched yours and my garage door was operational 30 seconds later. Thank you so much!
Julie thank you so much ... I couldn't reengage my garage door ... I was about to kick my dog out of frustration .. and then I found your video ... You are a life saver ... and I'm going to give you five stars ... 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Omg… jacked around for 2 days with videos, Genie manual, took Uber to work and back because I couldn’t get the door open manually. This video saved the day! Thank you so much!!!
You have NO idea how long I tried to re-engage mine! Every video kept telling me to pull outward but mine was stuck like yours. I thought mine was broken. in 5 minutes you helped me fix it! Thank you!
Thank you so much!!! Like you said, the white part has to latch so I looked for the white thing and let it run. AND MAGIC!!!! It worked. No other video explains it like you did. You may want to redo it and title it "Reengaging garage door doesn't work. Look for the white thing" or something like that. You were the 5th and final video.🎉🎉🎉
Thanks for the video! I wasn't patient enough to let it run and re-engage and kept turning it off. This is what makes RU-vid great! People seeing a problem and offering to help the rest of us avoid embarrassment and hours scouring through manuals.
I'll add to the chorus of thanks for this video, it was spot-on! I searched manuals and the Genie website and found nothing, but this simple video provided the answer, even though I have a different model. Thank you very much!
This was VERY helpful for us. Ours had a complication in that the installer had set the upper stop limit too high and the carriage latch would not move far enough away from the motor to quite reach the door catch even with the door all the way up. The chain would only move 3 inches either way and then stop. But then I saw the down arrow button on the motor and got the chain to move far enough to engage the latch, but still needed to reset the up and down limits. So I downloaded the manual for our Genie 7035 and completed steps 1 through 4 to reprogram the down and up limits (steps 1 & 2) and save them and then check the force setting and reverse test (steps 3 & 4) and now the door operates properly. The backup battery was fine, so I didn't need to reprogram any of the remotes because the opener had remembered those, including the wireless Home-link one in my 2008 Honda Odyssey. But I LOVED how clearly YOUR video showed me that turnbuckle that needed to connect with the door catch!
Thank you! This helped so much. I went for 2 days without parking in my garage because I couldn't figure it out before I watched your video. Thanks for sharing.
well, it wasn't 3 days, but it must have been a half-dozen or more failed attempts before watching your video and then it worked like a charm! Thanks so much for the help!
Just saw your video, had the same problem. Power went out so I had to disconnect the door from the opener and couldn't figure it out. Mine actually swivels instead of going up and down, but same principle. Thank you so much for sharing, super helpful!!!
Thank you so much for this video! Just came home from work after 12 hrs and my kids had pulled the emergency cord and I couldn’t figure out how to reengage it. Tried this and it worked immediately. Thank you!!!
Thank you! I disengaged it this am from a power outage and it usually reengages pretty easy. But it didn’t tonight. So RU-vid to the rescue. Thanks so much. Didn’t know the real mechanics. So thank you so much
The key here, which you showed, but didn’t talk about, to get it to work again, is the extra pull down to get the doohickey back up higher. When you disconnect, it lowers the doohickey about 1/4”, so pushing it sideways does not engage it. Thank you sweet gal!
Thank you Julie. After watching 6 You Tube videos yours was the only one that explained it simply with no technical names or jargon. My door is fixed and back like new. Thank you again.
🎉. Thank you so much!! I watched a few videos (none of them worked)before I came across this one. Thank you for saving me $$$ when I do not have any to spare. I was dreading calling a repairman.
THANK YOU for this video. Even though my opener is a different model, your video helped me figure out what to do. The men who installed my garage door and the opener didn't even include the little tag on the release pull, and there are no instructions taped to the inside of the door itself. It's sad that we have to go online to get instructions about very expensive items that should have been fully explained when installed!
thank you so much Julie! I looked around youtube and nothing addressed my issue but your video did. I did the same thing of pushing up the part and it connected like a charm! Thanks again.
Young lady you are a gem! Thank you so much for your research and posting this video. You saved me so much time and headache. Much happiness and success to you. 😊
Thank you!!! I’m quite handy, but my pull cord doesn’t have any instructions, so I stared at this for like an hour trying to figure out how to re-engage it, before seeing your video saying you have to pull it down again to reopen whatever kinda latch is inside that thing 😂😂
Oh my, thank you so much, I couldn’t get it to reingage after watching several videos. Your video worked. My white part was too far away. No other video told me that.
Thank you for this. I couldn’t, for the life of me, understand what was going wrong. Though my problem was slightly different than yours, you helped narrow my focus to the core of the problem and I was then able to solve the problem.
Girl!! Your video just saved me! Thank you so much for posting this, I was able to follow what you said, and fixed my off track belt! You saved the day!
This worked for me, thank you!! Once I knew what to look for, I marched right out and tried it on my door and after two tries, it re-engaged. So helpful, thank you for posting your experience!
I guess this is a common theme. But I have watched a few other videos to reconnect my garage door to the opener. I was only able to do so after watching your video THANK YOU FOR POSTING!!!! I didn’t have to spend all night on a step ladder. THANK YOU AGAIN!!!
Sure thing! This was my first RU-vid video, and I decided to make it because I was so frustrated that no other videos out there were helpful to me. I'm glad to see it's so helpful to others!
I know you made this video 2years ago! But you have helped this 36 year old renter here in Melbourne Australia! If you set up a paypal link somehow on this video, i will happily transfer you! This saved me anxiety and potentially money! Thank you 🎉🎉
Wow! Thanks!!! I just watched several videos and not one of them mentioned you have to align it with the white box which I located up near the main power box. Saved me alot of hassle. God bless!
So helpful!!! I got up on the ladder, after trying the opener and it not latching to the carriage several times, and I had to turn mine back to a horizontal(sideways) position from when I first released it. THANKS!!!!!
