We do a short and dirty review of the Toyota Corolla. With the compact segment inflamed with cars like the Honda Civic, Mazda 3, Ford Focus and Hyundai Elantra, will this modern Corolla have enough originality or will it rest on its reputation to get by?

There is a LARGE segment of us who want a reliable car that looks decent with good gas mileage. The Corolla is that. If you want a sports car, then look somewhere else. 'Nuff said.

In Uruguay that's not one of the slow cars on the road 😅 It's one of the best price/quality options. Mi uncle had an accident at 87 mph on a dirt road (yes, he's insane 😂) and he walked away with no harm at all. So that's and important part of that Corolla to. Love that car, I hope I could buy one someday...

I just wish they could make a wagon again with AWD. That would be a great car. Imagine Toyota's reliability with wagon practicality. Subarus are great, but having another competitor like that might make them have to improve their products even more. I would definitely get a new Toyota wagon if it was an option in America. Unfortunately, it's only available in foreign markets

I love how this review is so realistic. they didn't badger the corolla because it wasn't a "driver's car" like every other car reviewer does nowadays. They reviewed it for what it really is. An appliance that does the main job of a car A.K.A, reliable/comfortable transportation, really well. I own this car and I agree, some days I'm in my car and I really wish I had something faster, sportier, and cooler. Then while driving I see cars pulled over the road for speeding, or having some sort of mechanical trouble. I can't help but feel peace of mind that this thing is so comfortable, cheap, and low radar, that suddenly all regrets for not buying a sportier, cooler car kind of melt away. There's a reason that this is the best selling car worldwide. People really need to stop hating on toyota for being boring, cause at the end of the day, it get's the job done, although not as fun, is way easier, which is what really matters most when designing any product.
@savagegeese
@savagegeese 8 лет назад
And you get it without being butt hurt about it. The car is an appliance and that's ok. Because in a world of products that are headaches or disposable the Corolla just works. No it's not that excited, but my understanding Toyota is working on making it just a bit more entertaining without screwing it up.
@cwqrpportable
@cwqrpportable 8 лет назад
"They reviewed it for what it really is???" How? How many times will you see a mainstream Corolla driver subjecting their car to this kind of driving on a curvy road? This review is akin to someone putting an iPhone camera up against a nice Nikon SLR. It's just weird and no appropriate.... It's lazy journalism.....
@jamesmorris858
@jamesmorris858 7 лет назад
+Binder Dundat did you even pay attention to what he said? He clearly states several times that most ppl will not drive the corolla this way & that it's not meant to be an enthusiasts car. He's trying to push the car to see its limitations, which is what he does in all his reviews.. He called it like it is which is a comfortable, fuel efficient, average car that you don't have to worry about that gets the basic job done.
@cwqrpportable
@cwqrpportable 7 лет назад
Yes, as hard as it was, did pay attention and watched every second of the review. I'll emphasize, so even you might understand, the reviewer wasted time with a silly, egotistical review that had more to do with perpetuating his style of reviewing rather than a good review of this economy, compact family car. If most people won't drive like this, then why bother mentioning it?

Well most Americans finance Corolla for 60 months so I don't get your point. The average car loan is 5 years so i guess most Americans can't afford a Corolla either. Almost nobody takes out 48 month loans anymore. 84 month loans are for people who really can't afford the car

If you can't afford to buy a Corolla in 4 years of working, then you honestly shouldn't even be buying a new car in the first place. There are plenty of good cars out there for $5,000 and below.

The Corolla is not reliable, it’s cheap to fix. They go bad, the early 00’s blew gaskets, but they were cheap to fix. The new one have shit transmissions. Any mechanic can fix this and fix it cheap. They sold a lot, so parts are available like crazy so they’re cheap. But the Toyota Corolla is not more reliable than other cars, it’s normal.

I bought the Corolla LE for $12k with 90k miles I’m at 208k mile with 0 mechanical problems. I changed the CVT fluid at 160k miles and it’s past due for another but no issues. I was worried about the CVT taking a shit on my but the CVT’s held up. Extremely grateful for this car, it’s taken me through my apprenticeship, work, 24 hour road trips from Arizona to Missouri and plenty of 400 mile road trips. If you drive a lot and need something reliable and good on gas look no further. Thank you Toyota.

I felt a lot of people hating Toyota's Corolla and Camry, but every month we saw these two models on the top sale list. Those 'Sporty' cars like Mazda 6 sold really bad. I think Toyota really understands the marketing that majority people just want a super reliable, fuel efficient, comfortable ride commute car. Handling, acceleration, or dynamics are just cherries on the cake.
@madridtillidie
@madridtillidie 8 лет назад
LOL no, people keeping going back to the showroom of Toyota because of the whole reliable thing, and it has really good resale value. But no, Toyota didn't figure out what people want, it's just that Toyota can pump out anything named corolla/camry and people will flock to buy it. Head to head, the Mazda is better at handling, sportiness, looks, driver orientation but your average buyer in the US doesn't care about that. They care about the badge in the front. simple
@ItsMeCJ
@ItsMeCJ 8 лет назад
+madridtillidie Well, that is what Yifeng said. The majority of people just want a "super reliable" car. I wouldn't even say "resale value", because most people buy Toyota's with the intention to keep them "until the wheels fall off". I'll say this, I had a Mazda and moved over to Toyota. Their cars are pretty expensive to maintain and tend to LOVE maintenance when they get older. I'm talking multiple things at once from oil leaks, axles, engine mounts, replacing hoses, you name it! All very expensive to repair especially for an "economy car". Replacing the engine and transmission mounts on my old Mazda was literally 3x more expensive to the comparable Toyota/Nissan/Honda brands. Crazy!
@steelheart4148

I have to say I felt the same way you do about the Corolla. But my feelings have changed tremendously since I bought a 2017 SE. I got rid of my Cherokee Trailhawk and that awful 9spd. I lease this Corolla and it will be handed down to my daughter in a few years when she is ready to drive. I got the CVT since the manual is even worse(I'm a manual guy always). The CVT, once you learn its ways, is much much better than the ZF 9spd. On the highway the Cherokee took what seems liked for ever to kick down for passing. The Corolla is way faster in highway passing. It's loud for sure. Not one single rattle. Car feels solid and handles decent considering solid rear axle. Now I've owned many enthusiasts cars and consider myself a true enthusiast. It's not a GTI or Miata. It's, like you said, an appliance. But a good appliance. It will run forever will normal maintenance. It looks decent and even has things 30K cars don't have like auto climate and nice wheels. I was always picking on the Corolla but now I'm beyond sold because it does its best at being just a car.

You can't even enjoy high end car audio this car sucks no matter how much you pretty it up believe me I know. I have put 12k of the best car audio in and I often just drive in silence because how disappointed I am in the car. well not in complete silence because how much road noise that seems to come through, I suppose thats why I can't enjoy my car audio because the same reason I hear the road noise is the same reason my audio can't be enjoyed never again will I own a Queerolla or Toyota. However I did have the car audio shop quote me a price to deaden the car from top to bottom with 3 layers that would around $2600.

I drive like a grandma. Yet I'm 18. Personally, I dont mind my car as an appliance. I cant speed around anywhere. If I could speed around I would love to get a fast car. But that's stupid to get a fast car and drive 40 mph. I want my car to be reliable and also look nice. Not a overly done car. But not an overly boring bland car. For me, I personally like the whole look of theis Corolla. I would change the tail lights. But I do really like this. But I needed up getting a 2013 Camry. Its bigger. But also when I got it, it was modified a bit. Black rims, tinted windows, with a grey body. And leather cloth mixture seats. And it's the sports edition. And it all black inside. It's a really comfortable car. I really love it. I would have been fine with a corolla S trim. But I didn't end up with that. I lasted in the back of one of these for a 2 hour trip. I was impressed on the back seat room. But the girl driving was a bit short. But still a ton of room. Mu back started hurting a bit. But a jacket rolled up fixed that. It was comfortable everywhere else.

My wife has a 2016 Corolla LE CVT. The fuel economy calculator has never been reset and says 42.1mpg after 35K miles. It's been bulletproof reliable. Only been back to the dealer once, 45 minutes total, for the recall to inspect the CVT and update its software. After the update, the CVT drives better. It used to coast too much down hills. Now it engine brakes down hills so no more need to ride the brake. We're debating buying a 2021 Corolla LE CVT for her and I'll drive the 2016.

Also you could get this car with the traditional torque converter automatic but it only comes on the base model (L) trim.. which is weird because I thought it was the better option haha

12:29 fun fact: They're called "goose neck hinges". Little throw-in regarding the decklid opening systems: This solution (goose neck hinges + torsion springs) is mostly used on low price vehicles (or on cars from the 60s/70s) because it's only steel profile with some fasteners and bumpers and spring wire - and in most cases it lasts longer then the version with dampers would do. The more expensive solution are the multi-link hinges with dampers - there is no intrusion by the hinges, but you have to design a wider water channel in order to place the hinge on the BIW (means a smaller width of the trunk as a result). But it is more expensive because of the multi-piece design of the hinges and the dampers. These dampers have a problem: They do not operate stable in different temperatures: in the summer the decklid gives you an uppercut after you click on the touchpad and during winter you have to pull it all the way up. Additionally you have to meet the forces for opening, closing and latching effort according engineering spec - it's a pain in the ass. Foot activated and obstacle sensing power liftgates or decklids are the most expensive systems yet. I personally do not like them because they are only practical, when you have no free hand to open them. In most other cases you will have to wait until this abra cadabra happens.

well,my dad has this car and i have to say that you just nailed it.great review. and yes you are wright,it is what it is,a very good point a to point b car. its not for people who like lotus elise or mx5's. but there is hope,i mean at least for my dad,because although he hate driving my mx5 ( i'm guessing that the coilovers don't add to the experience),he likes the look of it.

I am considering buying this car second hand. This review gave me the basics of the performance an livability. I drive a slow car now, but its fine. I think reliability is very exciting! I rather spend my time, and money into things I want to do rather than a glitchy unreliable or a gas guzzler.

I, too, recently purchased a 16 Corolla S Premium. I went with the sport version not because I'm an aggressive driver but because it has four wheel disc brakes. The other trim levels have rears drums which I'm not thrilled with. By the way, I've gotten slightly over 48 mpg driving conservatively. It's not the dead-feeling, cheap, or vanilla car this vid portrays it to be. The steering feels fine to me, I'm satisfied with the low end torque, noise is subdued, no rattles or squeaks, and the ride isn't too bad for a compact car. I've never had a CVT before but it's not as bad as I had expected or had heard. Life's too short to complain about fake shift points! As a matter of fact, I don't even pay attention to them. Bottom line, I think it's a great little car with far more highlights than downfalls.

I have a 13 with the sport package and a 4 speed auto. I drive it mostly in 2nd gear so the VVT-i kicks in yo. LOL. But really, they can be quick without beating the total shit of it. Between 3500-4500 RPMs there's plenty of power. I wouldn't wish a CVT on anybody though.

This is my car.....I love the car honestly. I have the le trim....because any other trim above that loses the value of driving the car. It has everything that I want and features I didn't know I wanted. It has automatic climate control, cruise control, rear backup camera....it even reminds me to change the oil. Its the car you don't have to think about.....which is the entire point of the toyota corolla. I spilled a chocolate shake on cloth seats.....barely scrubbed and it came out. The seats fold down....I have brought home patio seats and bookcases in the sedan. I like the hard plastics....because it is easy to clean. This is the super family car....kids destroy everything they touch....better to give them plastic. Does it struggle up mountains.....yes, because the engine, although reliable, is not powerful, like at all. Only question.....why test the manual? The toyota corolla owner wants the least amount of trouble. Shifting involves work....there is no sport mode in this car. What is the point of the S trim? Go buy the civic if that is want you want.
@Hobinator17
@Hobinator17 3 года назад
Don't sleep on the manual. Some people really don't like CVTs. They want everything you mentioned plus the ability to be more physically engaged with the drivetrain and road. Not everyone can have a daily commuter plus a fun car, they need it all in one package.

I own one. In slate. I wish I had skipped heated seats and gotten the manual instead (Canada got BOTH together). It's a simple car, my second Corolla; I've had an 8th Gen Civic Si, a Mark V Golf, and a 9th Gen Corolla too just prior, all manuals. It's reliable and durable. Averages 35mpg with lots of full-throttle acceleration from a stop. It's comfortable, seats could be a bit better and the structure seems a little too flexy- the door seals rub AND the dash rattles like crazy at certain temperatures, not at all at others. Except in looks, the older Corolla was much better overall (in terms of feel, but that could be the manual helping). This new Corolla looks astonishingly good. It almost looks like a hot little Euro number, but with far better real-life durability and quality.

13:54 nobody else thought that was his coffee cup on top of the roof? nice honest review. I am on the fence about this and a Civic 2015. Although the Civic is CVT as well I find it does a better job of mimicking an actual transmission with gears. The Civic is still pretty boring...but the Toyota felt like driving a sedated vacuum cleaner on top of a cloud and was extremely unresponsive and had really slow reaction time...made me kinda nervous, it takes some getting used to I guess.

currently renting 2017 corolla now and its not that bad. The acceleration is slow but again I am trying to stay in eco mode..lol. Teaching me to go slow. Handling is not the worse I driven. Definitely understeer but with better tires, it will handle much better. Biggest problem with cvt for me, at higher speeds, engine braking takes a while. If I get it, it will definitely be a manual.

Four wheel independent suspension is essential for a smooth ride. The Honda Civic has it. Most other compact class cars do not. I think the Mazda 3 has it. The large Hyundai Sonata SE sedan has it, and you can buy a Sonata for the price of a Civic LX if you bargain correctly. Be friendly and politely offer 15% below MSRP. If they say no, just thank them for their time and walk away. Chances are you will be called back.
