Early synthetic stocks from 40-odd years ago were heavy and clunky - ugly, too - inconsistently manufactured and just not really a match for a good-quality wood stock. Synthetic stock technology has changed a LOT since then, and with vastly improved polymers and aluminum cores to provide stability, a synthetic stock is now a great choice for many applications. Wood, of course, has The Look. You can't replace the warmth and beauty of nicely figured walnut, and in mild weather conditions, wood works fine. But if you're operating in a really wet, rainy environment, a synthetic stock is the way to go. It's impervious to swelling and warping caused by moisture, which can mess up your rifle's accuracy. Modern synth stocks from Magpul, Hogue, HS Precision, and others are just plain TOUGH - stronger than wood. Specialty varmint rifle stocks are far more likely to be synthetic. But wood IS pretty.....
