Man people in the comments don’t like him marking it. It’s his own mower, he can do as he pleases. I typically sharpen a few blades all at once for neighbours etc so mine are all labelled up cuz we’ve all got different blades… and I’m looking to avoid messing it up. Even if there’s only one way to put it on I like knowing it’s right when putting it on rather than fumbling around.

My problem is with the comment about an angle grinder being the best as someone who has used a bench grinder since I was a kid to do the same thing I find that remarkably stupid. That’s not even a costly, big deal. Marking the blade you can do with out a sharpie. The bigger issue is showing the world on a RU-vid video how to sharpen a lawn mower blade against the rotation of the angle grinder. It’s not the end of the world, people make comments, I personally don’t even remove the blade while sharpening, I can sharpen it good enough with it still attached to the lawnmower.

Including more information about the nail and how to balance the blade maybe helpful information as well.. so for those who are unfamiliar, here is my quick two cents. Once on the nail the blade should sit at or near level. If not, remove small amounts of material from the blade on the low side (the side that is lowest) until it is at or near leave. If you skip this step you will have a vibration. If the balance if way off it's possible to damage your mower.

It probably comes down to what we're mowing. Someone with a push mower and a manicured lawn may be able to get away with filing their blade (singular) by hand. I mow three acres and my mower deck has three blades. I hit rocks and other stuff and my blades end up having an edge that is nowhere near straight. I have to grind quite a bit to get some semblance of an edge back. No way am i going to spend hours filing each blade by hand. But i can see how some people could do that.

Each tool including shovels have specific specs on how and where they are sharpened for max cutting and longevity. Ff handcrews even carry files to sharpen their tools in the field...... Whether it's a pulowski, McCloud, or a shovel, each tool has specific sharpening specs that include such as for shovels..how far up the sides will be sharpened.....this is to protect the ff feet if when digging the boot slips off the shovel..... And yes shovels are used for scraping grass areas and are sharp enough to cut small branches like an axe....if absolutely necessary..... although there are more effective tools that are typically used. @@dzl6848 Look. YES, you can turn the start handle down, and that makes it less likely it can fire up. Do you know how the start buttons work on mowers?. Have you ever dismantled a mower that has been used a lot, and not serviced? Inside their components, they are heavily clogged up with oil, dust, grass . . . they are perfectly capable of carrying a current even though you think you have closed off the switch. And for the mowers that rely on shifting the choke system right out of run-state, this can EASILY get clogged up so that, while it will suffice to STOP the mower cycling, enough fuel/air mix is present to fire the mower back up if the piston works through a compression cycle. And it isn't worth the risk of relying on the off switch, the damage isn't some little slice on the surface of your hand or foot. A mower will tear your hand to pieces. Put "Motor mower injuries into google. The sparkplugs have a very easily removed and replaced connection, and it is for this very reason. If you are going to work on it, it costs you just a tiny effort and you are SURE it can not fire up.

I used to be a technician at a landscaping repair company I was basically a mechanic for landscaping equipment one of my favorite jobs was sharpening lawn mower blades and my boss always wanted me to do it as quick as possible and just get it done it doesn't matter if it's actually good and sharp or not but I found that if I polished the blades and actually spend a decent amount of time going through the grits the blades would last significantly longer and give him much better cut so if you ever have the time and want to see an increased life on your blades and much better-looking long go through the grits and finish on a buffing wheel with some compound and get the blade really shining and make sure to do both sides the beveled side and the convex I'd just to make sure you get rid of the bar and give the blade proper cutting angle and you won't be disappointed it takes like an extra five minutes at most and it's worth the time

#1 Rule of sharpening tools with abrasives, never, never ever sharpen towards a sharp edge, always away. Otherwise you will eventually launch the tool across the shop.

Always tip the mower so the spark plug is in the air. If you tip it any other way, the oil can find its way up there and foul the plug. Also, no need to sharpen past the first 3 inches of the blade. It spins at about 3000 rpm, so grass never touches past that point. If it doess, address the poor running motor. (small engine mechanic with 30 years experience)

Marking the blade is correct. It might be unnecessary but costs similar to taking a sip of water or coffee and the pay off is not having to think. Whenever you remove conscious thought as a portion of a chain of physical or logistical events then you strengthen that chain. If you think you're too good for a move like this you're worse than useless for building or fixing things.

Real beauty of the flap wheel is that, if you’ve got a blade with a decently hard cutting edge to start with, it’s a bit tougher (but by no means impossible) to overheat the business end of the blade and leave it too soft to maintain an edge.
