Welcome to my first video of 2024! Even though it’s a new year, this video format should feel fairly familiar. Also familiar is the camera setup for the day. All photos were created with the Fujifilm X-H2S and Fujinon XF 16-80mm f/4 lens. Due to the overcast and rainy conditions, most photos used ISO settings of 1600-3200.
All photos from today’s video can be found here - www.flickr.com/photos/mwslade...
Heres the outline: First, I’ll start with this brief introduction, including the goals for the day. Second, will be a slideshow of photos from the day. And, third will be some thoughts about what I’ve learned from this photo excursion and what some next steps will be for me.
Introduction:
One of my photography goals this year is to find more sources of inspiration, both through RU-vid photography channels and from photography collections in books. I want to be intentional with each photography session to practice my own interpretation of an inspirational photographer’s work. The inspiration for this photo session is Mark Fearnley, who is a British fine art street photographer. I’ve followed his work on Instagram ( / mark.fearnley ) for quite awhile, and recently watched a video featuring him on Roman Fox’s channel ( • The Photography of Mar... )
For this outing, the inspiration I took from Mark’s photography was to seek out images of people, preferably individuals, in passages/corridors/etc… with dramatic lighting. The cloudy, rainy day was not promising for dramatic light, but my knowledge of Bellevue came in handy for some potential locations that could lend themselves to my desired photos.

I love this format. It's easy to forget to THINK about what you want to get out of an experience and get overwhelmed with being physically in an environment to where you lose sight of the photography a bit. Your video inspired me to take a few points down in a list on my phone that I can reference before I go out so I can keep some things in my head.

Oh! Many thanks for that perspective. I’ve heard it said that to create more interesting g photos you need to become a more interesting person. Maybe the opportunity to meet so many new people is making me a little more interesting ;) Cheers!

I really enjoyed these Michael. I agree that having a focus/framework to start from gives you a foundation that allows you to experiment from. Your point about slowing down is really on point. I find when I slow down I see so much more. Nice job on your first video of the year!! Thanks for taking us along. Have a great week.

I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Once some professional matters sort themselves out favorably, I need to get up to your fair city for some street photography, possibly via Cascades train.

Very enjoyable video Michael, great captures, especially the black and white “stuff”. Did you “see” black and white through the viewfinder, or did you “see” in color and did the conversion in post from raw? As always, be well, stay safe and have a great 2024.

Thanks, Enrique! For these photos, I didn’t do the black and white until I got to Lightroom. Since it was such a gray day, the black and white seemed like a great fit to me. Cheers!

The three chairs @ 6:33 is a jewel. Working in B&W should aid in slowing you down if you let it work its magic. What if you used your XH-S to run video up to the point where you are ready to take a still, and then switch over to pix and take the shot. It might free up one whole hand. Just a thought. Continue branching out, I like it. Bill

Hi Bill. Thanks for your kind words and suggestions. I’ve done some video at times with X-H2S and love the quality, but it doesn’t have stabilization for walking shots that I would prefer…

@@MSladekPhoto bummer dude no IBIS. Hmmmm. You can make it happen.

@@dwrisdon2487 It does have ibis, but really need a gimbal for smooth walking shots with it.

How is your copy of the 16-80 at the long end Michael? Above 65, the one I have access to seems to be rather soft. Thanks!

Hi Daryl! I’m really happy with my copy of the 16-80 seems good to me at 65mm+. About 18-20 of the 44 photos I edited to be used in the video were photographed at 65mm+, with most of those at 80mm.

I liked a lot of your shots, and I noticed the nice use of contrast-like with the napkins. I was thinking how many of your photos are of people walking from the back, by themselves. I feel like your photos are quiet, introspective, and happy. Contrast that to some street photography that shows people in kind of a weird way, and seems loud and brazen. I'm not suggesting to be that way, I'm just noticing. I might suggest filling the frame a bit more, like you did at 5:35, just to get out of what seems to be your comfort zone. At 5:26, the women's pants caught my eye, I would like to just take a picture of their legs, including where the color changes. I don't think that would be an easy thing to do, granted! Your shot at 5:43, I might try cropping it vertical, taking out the man on the left but leaving in the man looking at her on the right. I really like that you got all those people, and pretty close up and we can see their faces. Did they notice you - did you get to interact with them? I need to remember to carry a card or a piece of paper so I can get people's email and send them their photo. Sometimes I remember, but not always.

Hi! Many thanks for sharing your thoughts on the photos. Here's my follow up: I love filling the frame! It's something that's relatively "easy" for me, and has been my go to composition for al long time. Soooo, that IS my comfort zone ;) To be honest, I didn't see the color of the pants, untie you mentioned this. Wow! I love that we all see different elements in the scene. Regarding the lady with the fan - I wanted to include all the activity around her in that photo to show how she was doing her thing despite the people around her. Wish I was that brave! Regarding the people in this group seeing me - some did, but most were so engaged in their preparations that I was pretty invisible. I do always have business cards to share, if people ask! Cheers!!!
