Great tutorial. Thank you for mentioning sit-down long-arm/mid-arm machines. Not many videos do that.

Thank you! My mom has a Handi Quilter Sweet 16 that I enjoy quilting on…same quilting techniques I use on my domestic machine but with so much more space!

I hand sewed and hand quilted a very large quilt with many photos and other appliqué to make story blocks. I quilted up to the appliqué then I turned the quilt over and quilted on the back side going through two layers. Yes, it was a lot of work and took me nearly double the time. But, as an inexperienced first time quilter, I didn’t know what else to do.

Your thread painting is beautiful! Do you have tutorials showing how you did those? Nice options on the quilting. Thanks!

Thank you! I don’t have any more quilting videos planned in the near future (maybe this winter though!). I’ve been busy in my garden and kitchen posting cooking videos on this channel: ru-vid.com/show-UCwokMt217MxI8-RXWP7xaOw

Great job Kelly. A good basic video for beginning machine quilting designs. Your tempo, pacing and volume are perfect. I loved the baby sounds in the background!

Thank you so much! I try to film when baby is napping...but as you can tell from this video, she was with me in the sewing room for most of the filming...adding her commentary about the quilts :)

Loved your video! It has really helped me to gain insight on quilting ideas! I was wondering what you would suggest for quilting a bench pillow that has a lot of applique in it. I have a Solaris that does hoop quilting, but for something as long as a bench pillow with lots of applique, I am concerned about matching-up the quilting in multiple hoopings around applique. The bench pillow is called "Gnome where you park it."

Hoop quilting can be hard since as you said, you have to line up the quilting each time you reposition. What type of quilting do you like to do? Straight lines with your walking foot? Free motion quilting? Ruler work? Or a variety? The gnome pattern for the bench pillow could lend itself to using a variety of quilting techniques. You could quilt straight lines in the hats and on the camper, free motion quilting in the beards to create texture, “thread painting” with a couple different colors of green for the trees and wavy lines in the water…just some ideas :) I’d recommend picking quilting designs you feel confident you can execute, practice on a sample quilt first, and plan out a path for quilting to get you from one space to the next for areas like the water and trees. Good luck and have fun!

@@kellyannefreeman7257 Thank you so much Kelly! I'm not confident with Free motion quilting and would love to take a class in thread painting, but really like your ideas! I will quilt without the hoop and go with lines and designs in my Solaris. God bless.

@@tammykfrank You’re so welcome! There are many designs you can do with a walking foot! Have you seen Irene on her Sugaridoo RU-vid channel? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kdk5i9ECII0.html She also has a blog with walking foot designs that might give you some inspiration. sugaridoo.com/101-ideas-for-straight-line-quilting/ And please do try free motion quilting! It opens up so many possibilities! We all start out with designs not looking like we want. But keep going! You only get better with practice. And honestly, once you finished free motion quilting on a project, you don’t notice all the little mistakes you might have made.
