Also a curly-haired lady, I like the CGM as a general guideline/resource when looking for new products, but the fact that some of its followers act like if you deviate at all you're going to disintegrate your hair after a single blow dry is silly. Moderation is the key with this, I think once you have a reset period to give your hair time to heal and go back to its natural ways (which you clearly have since its been over a year), styling it using unapproved methods or products once a week or so isn't really going to make a long term impact.
Yes! I’m naturally curly and I’ve gone back and forth on how i style throughout the week for years and my hair is fine! I don’t use heat but once or twice a week and I use quality, nourishing products the rest of the time. It’s just hair y’all
Girlllll, please feel free to re-invent yourself as many times as you would like! Try new hair, clothes, make-up. All of it! Embrace every new inspiration and season of life! ❤
I feel like the CGM is great for people with curly hair who are just starting to look at how to care for it. But I find that it's just too much work. To me, everyone's curls look best when they play around and find the right products for them. Manes by Mell has been my best resource on caring for your curls without going through so many rules. In finding the right products, I have found that my curls always go back to their natural best state no matter how many days I have kept it straight.
You are spot on! The rule should be, there are no rules. Every hair is different-those rules will not make sense for someone like me that has extremely thick, coarse, dry hair vs someone with thinner type curls. There is also preference- I prefer elongated curls whereas some like the fuller volume type curls. BTW Manes by. Mell is my hero 🙌🏻
Hair is the ultimate accessory! You can appreciate your natural texture and color while also wanting to make a change. Do what makes you feel confident!!! 💇🏼♀️
I “quit” the curly girl method and let me tell you both choosing to do it and then stop was a great choice. I’m glad I did it, especially as a swimmer with a lot of coloring damage on top of the heat damage, but given how fine my hair is and loose my wave pattern is, after doing it from 2018 to the beginning of 2021, I found I was getting really frustrated with how oily my roots always were no matter what I did and went back to using sulfate shampoos every other wash. I still don’t heat style my hair because I find that I can get my hair pretty straight with enough product and constant brushing as it dries if that’s the look I want (although I do diffuse it with heat) I use sulfates and silicones now and my hair likes it and is actually able to wave better with it. If you’re not getting everything you want from wearing your hair natural, doing what works best as long as your taking care to protect it is fine!
I’m with you on the CGM method: personally, the “rules” don’t work for my lifestyle or hair! I like to dye and bleach and express myself through my hair and have created my own (loose) CGM method that works for me. 😄
I tried...but I always go back. Sometimes I air dry it and let it be relatively straight. I'm not sure I have ever found the right combo of products? Maybe? Sometimes my hair looks good that way, sometimes it looks bad, even after the same amount of work. It has proved to frustrate me regularly.
@@elyseparker5333 honestly, products aside, it’s all about technique and hydration. I use shampoo, I don’t use gel. but I squish a generous amount of leave-in conditioner and it makes me content! ☺️
Love the straight ponytail! It looks so fun and polished yet casual. I didn’t use heat on my hair for about a year and my curls recovered beautifully, but I’ve enjoyed straightening/curling my hair occasionally since then
I definitely do my own loose version of the curly girl method. I use sulfate free shampoo always and I tend to avoid silicones but if they end used in my hair not the end of the world. I blow out my hair every few months or when I travel/special occasions it just makes my life easier. I also get my hair bleached with highlights because that’s what I like. CGM is way too strict but is a good guideline. My scalp could never handle just cowashing and such
Can I just say I admire how you and Steven parent. There is no one parent caring the full load and I feel like that is something that doesn’t happen normally
i quit the curly girl method myself! i love embracing natural hair but it's just so so much easier to heat style my hair after washing it and have it look great for 4+ days. with my natural hair i get one really nice hair day and then the rest of the days are spent trying to revive... just too much work imo. plus the freedom to use products that have non curly girl approved ingredients feels nice haha
Totally feel this! I tried it for awhile and my hair looked good for maybe a day and I felt the products made it look like shit. Love my 4 days I get with a blowout! And my hair feels awesome!
Ok I feel like moms don’t think to lay their babies on a blanket and just enjoy the outdoors. Maybe because they’re scared of germs. But I think it’s great that Grace is being exposed to the outdoors and both can enjoy the nice weather.
Also with you with CGM. Usually is seasonal for me. I tend to leave it curly for spring and summer because of the weather too hot to use heat but then in fall and winter I tend to straighten more. Everyone just do whats best for them and makes them feel more confident. We look good either way 💕
I am so grateful we are in the same stage of life and safe size! You make me feel normal. Prior to pregnancy I was a size 12-14 now I am a 18-20 and I’m having such a hard time with it. My baby was born in February and I am 25 too! So grateful for you!!
Same boat here 💜 12-14 pre-pregnancy and now an 18-20! Currently trying to find clothes that I feel comfortable in :) I’m 25 too but had my kiddo last year!
I’ve had very similar feelings about curly girl recently. I was all in for almost as long as you (I found you channel when you first tried curly girl!) but now I’m working in person full time as a teacher and wearing my hair curly takes SO much more time in the morning than treating it “normally.” I just haven’t been able to make it work recently and experienced a lot of guilt because of it. It’s comforting to know that so many others have had this same struggle.
I had the same realization about my hair and my desire to stop wearing my hair wavy after reviving natural waves during quarantine. For me, my breaking point was the "upkeep" and the unpredictability that come with styling my hair wavy/curly. Even if it damages my hair more when I straighten it, I love how easy it is to manage afterwards, that I can run my fingers through it and that I can go longer in between shampoos, since there is no buildup of products. Plus, I feel more myself with straight hair, since it's the way I styled it since high school. The best part is that with all I learned about how to take care of the health my hair, my hair is healthier than ever, even if I straignten it. Best of both wolrds!
Stephen has truly blossomed as a dad. Not that I had any concerns about either of you. But as someone struggling with fertility, you two are a joy to watch. ❤️
Since I'm very lazy about my hair, I do a lazy version of the curly girl method. I avoid silicones and sulfates (which works for my hair, but may not work for everybody), use a moisturizing leave-in condition, throw my wet hair in a microfiber towel for a minute, and then air dry. I also avoid brushing between washes (I wash my hair every other day). This works for me, my hair, and my schedule. The CGM is a great set of tools and guidelines, but it can also be time consuming and expensive. There's no shame in making it work for you, your life, and your hair.
This is exactly my routine as well. I use a hair mask every month, when I feel like I might need it. And I’ll curl and straighten my hair when I feel like it which is usually ones every 3-4 months honestly.
Obviously social media and RU-vid mask a lot of things, but I seriously love Stephen and Sierra’s relationship so much. Like it seems so healthy and the way you guys communicate is amazing. I hope to eventually have a relationship like this
I quit the CGM after becoming a mom. It became too much to keep up with and I was more stressed about it. I would feel more put together when I took the few minutes to straighten my hair. Haven't 100% abandoned some of the CGM things and just use what works for me.
As a curly girl I’ve literally never used the “Curly Girl Method” and I have no complaints lol I looked into the CGM and it was just too much, and unnecessary in my opinion. As long as you’re taking care of your hair, know what works, what doesn’t, you’ll be good!
YES! THIS!! I honestly do a veeeeery simplified version of it, but mostly just treat my hair kindly and give it more nutrition and hidration and its perfect lol Doing the full CGM consumes your life of you want to follow it 100%
Gurl! Wear your hair how you like. No rules. I recently cut my hair short and got a keratin treatment because straight hair is way more low maintenance. No shame in letting the curls rest. They can come back. Also, Grace is a cutie pie ❤️❤️❤️
I can’t even begin to tell you how you and your sweet positive family are getting me through life right now, sending you guys much love and positive vibes
I've had super curly hair ever since I was a kid, but I never really identified with myself while having curly hair. It just never felt like the most true representation of "me". I always felt more myself when I straightened my hair, but obviously that really damaged it after years of straightening my hair like every day. But when I was 18 I finally got my first Japanese Straightening Treatment done to my hair and it was the best decision that I ever made! I go in to the salon for 2-3 hours once every 8-12 months and then my hair is straight for pretty much a year! No maintenance, no upkeep besides going to the salon about once a year. My hair feels SO healthy now, especially right after I get it done. If having straight hair with no maintenance is something that interests you then I'd highly recommend it! My hair is glossy and smooth and not frizzy from the moment I wake up! I absolutely love it and I love supporting small Japanese family-run salons that specialize in it!
that’s exactly what i do! when i want to keep my hair natural, i follow the curly girl method and when i want it straightened, i straighten it. for me it’s honestly the best of both worlds
I kept thinking about how pretty and confident you looked and then it cut to the part about you saying you feel really confident and pretty with your hair like that
Aww I would watch a Grace vlog for hours; she's SO CUTE. Thank you for giving me my baby fix now that mine are older (they're 2 & 5, and we're definitely done, but it's nice to see those cute baby smiles!!)
Drooling starts at 3 months like crazy! Teeth don't usually show until around 6 months. Not saying it's impossible. Also ear wax. That surprised me. All of a sudden all their body fluids just start flowing. My little one had tears from one eye only for the longest time. Has she cried tears yet? Oh my! I commented before Steven came on. So yeah, teething. LOL!! Try a fruit pacifier filled with Frozen breast milk. My little one LOOOVED it. It's gonna be messy, so have a bib on her. But she'll get nutrients and the help from the milk. I used the silicone ones. My sisters swear by the net ones, my little guy hated the net.
I noticed ear wax in my baby’s ears the other day and thought how long has that been there!? And tears show up more for our little man when he’s hungry it’s adorable and heartbreaking at the same time!
@@tamigarbarino6036 The ear wax will calm down, but even at 20 months my little guy still gets pretty waxy. The tears never get easier to see. But eventually he'll have real cries with tears and fake cries without tears. Lol!
I just feel the same way towards the CGM I straightened my hair this Saturday and im enjoying it since then i miss the confidence straight hair gives me but then i say to my self i dont want to lose all the effort and energy I spent on CGM Such a hard decision to make
Another person suggesting Manes by Mell! She helped me feel that managing my curls was flexiable, as easy as I want to be, and be HOW i want it! She is truly the best!
Man Grace's eyes are so beautiful. Hair is just hair, do you my dear. So, all babies are different, but my nephew loved ice in a sillicone pouch and he would just gum on that
The way Stephen isn't only a "father", he's a PARENT, warms my heart so much. Let me explain. We know how much having a baby and then taking care of a baby is seen as the mom's responsibility in society, and even tho our generation (I'm 25 just like you, Sierra) has been trying to change it, more often than not we see mom's our age do 95% and pretend 5% from the dad is okay, while we all can see the woman is on a verge of a breakdown from working so much (cooking, taking care of the baby, cleaning, and many times also working outside of the house). Here, you and Stephen, just seem to balance out each other's needs and the babies needs in a way I can only hope one day I have that dynamic as well. He knew you had been working and taking care of Grace, so the next day he took care of your beautiful baby girl so you could sleep in. You saw what he did and then let him have time for himself and play video games. He was taking care of Grace's bath so you cooked dinner. He takes care of the diapers, aka overseeing the stock, while you breastfeed. That's called being a partner, being a parent, being a team. You two are a TEAM. Not to mention the way you two looked at each other at the end of the video, I can see, anyone can see, how in love you guys are, how you two are truly soulmates. I'm just beyond happy for you three (and the dogs) for this family dynamic. You are an example of what a true, raw, real human beings go through and I'm so glad you found this piece of sunshine, giving PCOS people like me hope.
I also went though trying to love my hair curly and did the big chop after i found myself down the curly girl instagram rabbit hole but I hated the upkeep and ended up taking so much more time out of my day to reset my hair and make it work and i just ended up unhappy. Since i live in japan and straight perms are so easy to get here and I just feel so much happier with my hair straight i just decided there was no reason for me to keep forcing myself to go curly. Also the products are so expensive in general and difficult to import. Do what makes you feel happy and thank you for sharing
Be free with your beautiful hair, do whatever feels great. Sometimes I can get to stuck in labels or “restrictions” and I think my first cue is when it’s not fun anymore. Thank you for the video ♥️
As a one year postpartum gift to myself, I just went to a salon for the first time in about 6 years and chopped and donated my hair, and it feels so good to have a nice change 🤗🤗
I never did the curly girl method. I simply stopped straightening/blow drying (other than diffusing) and I started finding products that work for me. Figured out if air drying, diffusing, or plopping was best for me. Or a combination. Just had fun with it. My hair is finally growing, it’s extremely healthy, and my curls are happy and healthy. Curly girl method is so not necessary and so stressful. It makes curly hair a job when it shouldn’t be.
I relate soo much to your struggle with your natural hair. When I was a couple years in the curly girl method, I was disappointed by the results of my hair. Until, fairly recently I noticed that I was using too much product in my hair. My hair is fine, so literally a dime size is enough for my curls. Try seeing if maybe the products you are using are too heavy or if you are using too much. A clarifying shampoo can help get rid of any buildup. I would also suggest using a brush to distribute the product. I noticed it helped define my curls, hope this helps! And as you mentioned, you shouldn't feel forced to keep your hair curly 24/7, change is aways nice. So if you feel like straightening your hair from time to time, you have every right, there's no shame in that
I feel you on the CG method. I think part of it is the unreliability of how my hair will dry when if I already have shaky confidence makes it worse. I could see how having the control over how my hair would turn out making me feel better but I am really awful at blowing out my hair it looks bad every time I do it. And if I use a flat iron sometimes it still doesn’t get straight especially in summer. So I feel like I have a bad relationship with my hair in general. 😅
I quit the CGM after spending so much money on recommended products and so much time, none worked for my hair type it's ridiculous. I went back to my easy method that works great for me.
I remember a long time ago, you said that Grace looks just like Stephen, and I thought you were crazy. But now.... I realize you're right. 🤣 Its crazy though, they definitely change as they grow! I'll bet she will be looking more like you as she gets older. 💖
As someone with curly hair, I really like straightening my hair and leaving it a week. I feel like it lets the natural oils moisturize my hair and get down to the ends. And my curly hair benefits from it. Straightening your hair isn’t the devil there’s pros and cons.
Girlll I get it. I try to use curly girl method approved products but I still straighten. My hair is almost as curly as yours but I have super fine hair. I feel like it takes twice as long to manage the curl and make it look good than it does to just straighten it and I love the way it looks straight. Just do whatever makes you happiest and that works with your routine!
I found straightening my hair after my daughter was born best for me. She’s 10 months now. It’s easier to get ready in the morning and just helps me feel put together. Nothing wrong with doing what makes you feel better after having a baby. It’s an all around adjustment
Hair is just hair. Do what makes you happy! I personally had hair down to my mid back that I constantly dyed. I dyed it because it made me happy. I got sad my hair got super dried out. I shaved it all down and did a buzzcut because it made me happy. If I ever decide to change my hair again, it’ll be because it makes me happy, not because a community of people think they know what’s best for me.
Ah Brooklinen is the best! I bought a sheet/duvet bundle when my fiance and I moved into our new place a month ago. I am so thrilled we finally leveled up our bedding game haha

Finding the Curly Girl Method was liberating to me because I used to be a "slave" to straightening iron to the point that I wouldn't go in the pool or to the beach, or if i was out and it rained, suddenly my day was ruined. But quitting it was also liberating because, to an extent, I was becoming a slave to it too! If I didn't feel like styling or taking care of my hair, I'd feel guilty or feel like I was doing something wrong. Today I use the method as kind of a guideline, but I don't want my whole life and schedule to revolve around my hair... I do what works for me, and that's fine.
I had stopped watching your vlogs since Grace’s birth bc so many influencers I was following were doing baby content and I got a bit overwhelmed… now I’m back on track 🥺🤍
I definitely don’t follow CGM to a T! I use products they don’t approve, but it works for my natural curls & that’s what it’s all about-as long as you’re happy with your hair! I love wearing my hair curly and fell empowered, but wearing is straight is also fun to just change it up 🥰
Curly girl here too, I totally switch between natural and straight with no issues. I tried going totally CGM whilst on holiday, it just felt like my hair ruled the roost and was constantly wet, drying etc. New Rules, I now go straight whenever I feel like it no guilt! X
I exclusively straightened my hair all through high school my curls were terrible I started the curly girl method about three years ago I didn’t do any heat until my hair was healthy now I do it occasionally and it doesn’t mess up my hair as long as overall you’re still keeping a healthy routine and using heat protectant it should be fine
You and I have almost the same curl pattern and I have never used the proper curly girl method. I’ve used it more as an outline of how I should care for my hair. Works just fine for me!
I FEEL YOU on the curly vs straight hair. I love my natural hair and am so proud of it, but I do feel a lot better about myself with straight hair. The curls make me feel more unique/interesting, but the straight hair makes me feel prettier. It's always tough for me, mentally 🤷🏻♀️
Just for the record, my sheets are from Magic Linen not Brook Linen, but we LOVE them! Linen is super durable (just wash it on cold, delicate) and it's so much more breathable than other fabrics. They may be a little scratchy at first but after a couple washes they soften right up and continue to get softer and softer. Be prepared though, maybe it was just out set but there were fuzzies all over our room for the first month or so we had them 😂 I'd never seen green dust before that.
I’ve tried the CGM as a 2C curly chica and the only important thing I took from it was the importance or removing buildup every once in a while. I’ll use a great cheap shampoo to remove minerals, silicones and product buildup. But otherwise I find that my high porosity hair is more protected with silicones of all varieties and loads of protein in various sizes. The only other thing I enjoy is my own natural curls, I put heat on it maybe once every 6 months. I generally love the fluff and volume of my hair but if straightening it made me happy then I would do that! ☺️ it’s good to go through seasons
I think changing your hairstyle/ways you do/wear your hair is always a great way to feel good about yourself. Of course you should mix it up, you look great either way!
You are too adorable. Your hair looks very healthy curly and straight. BTW I hope you remember what you did to get that energy cause when Grace starts moving you may need it.
You look great with straight and curly hair. My hair is naturaly wavy, thick and long right now but have cut it all off to short. Sometime I loved it but other times I hated but missed my long hair so I decided to keep my hair long and only get it trim every 6 months. I usually blow dry and flat iron my hair but my wavy usually will comes out before it bother me but now I just leave it alone and sometimes just let my hair air dry
I often tell my friends that I never knew my hair had this much pattern but oh my goodness wavy/curly hair is high maintenance! (I am not!) I decided to dive in last fall as I noticed more "pattern" forming when I was lazy and let my hair air dry. I do really love it on me and I am most definitely not a CGM purist and have no qualms about using non-CG friendly product (aka sulphates and silicones) as needed. I tend to straighten it if I have less time to style (and for it to look decent, I need to wet style vs damp style). CGM is a good place to start, but once you figure out what works, do it it! (this includes both products and styling techniques).
