Yep. Op should go to either the EEOC or whatever the EEOC partner for his state is. All he would need is proof that he made the initial complaint and then hopefully he has a copy of whatever discharge papers they gave him. All those women could also file suit for religious and ethnic discrimination.

That mystery shopper story is so ridiculous. That employee did everything I would have wanted from a customer service standpoint. He explained it in simple to understand terms, but he could still fail his "evaluation" because he didn't do what the employer wanted. I'm glad that OP didn't rat him out.
I got a negative review from a mystery shopper because I was busy with an elderly customer and her coupons. I verbalized that I'd be with them as soon as possible. Surprise surprise when I go to the self checkout machine and find the groceries unattended and no one to he seen. Management asked me about it and I told them what happened. It wasn't held against me because the mystery shopper was an impatient asshole.

When I was a mystery shopper most of the questionnaires we had to complete were quite reasonable. I then got a new one for a clothing store I hadn't done before and the woman that assisted me in the store was lovely and could not have been more helpful. When I was completing the questionnaire, among the many questions there were three asking in different ways what she could have done better. I felt that was leading to finding something to be negative about her service.
The weirdest thing I ever experienced in a shop was, I came in looking for a VCR (it was the 90s). Looked around, nobody to help. So I went to study the details on the display boards, compared, narrowed down until I had what I wanted. The process took almost an hour (three isles of VCRs). THEN, after I decided which to take, all of a sudden a wild employee appeared. The douche wanted to put his tag on the box so he could claim commission. I told him to get lost or I kick his balls, throw the box into his mug and leave without the device.
Last story: If I've learned ANYTHING about the Activision/Blizzard fiasco, it's that companies with a certain "culture" will cover each other. Seems like that one problem employee isn't the ONLY one that thinks and says the things he does and people like HR are in on that circle.
What's the line? There's an in-group that the law protects but doesn't bind and an out-group that the law binds but doesn't protect. Seems to describe the company pretty well from what the story tells us.
Yeah, people gave the Catholic church crap (rightly so) for covering their own when they were accused of criminal acts, but I always knew that they were far from the only org doing this. They were probably one of the worst, but from what I saw coming out of Activision-Blizzard, they weren't as far ahead of the pack as we might like to think.
I had a boss who fired me because I did not want to wash the windows since it was very clearly gonna rain. he acted like it as the worst thing in the world and i was like 'oke bye' and went to visit an old workplace nearby that was actually good to me.

I was working at a restaurant named... let's just say it's synonymous with a "Container of Caucasians." I was serving a beef stew to a customer and gave the (horrible) joke of "Your name must be Stew!" The customer looked me dead in the eye and said "You're fired." I laughed and looked over my shoulder to see my manager behind me. "Hey Deb! This customer says I'm fired! Can I go home?" Deb: (Casually) "Oh sure, just clean up your tables, sweep the floor, and then clock out so you can be fired. But I'm going to rehire you for your 6 am shift tomorrow morning." Me: "Damn, thought I'd have a weekend off."

A mystery shopper is someone sent either by corporate or an outside service to pretend to be a clueless shopper, and then grade the store on the customer experience, whether the information provided was correct, whether the staff was friendly and approachable, etc.
A couple folks have spoken on what mystery shopping is, so I'll just say it's okay side money. Most jobs will pay between $8-25 depending on how in-depth the work is, and they take anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour. If you consider it, beware of scammers, as they abound the industry.
As a cashier: we're not trained to thank you. We're told to say "have a nice day/night". I've NEVER had another cashier tell me "thank you" other then when I tell them to have a nice day as well
How about you thank us for shopping at your store I can order anything online you know? , the only reason i still drive myself to the local supermarket is for the human element and that should be appreciated.

I think it's a cultural difference as well. Here in Finland, when I worked as a cashier I always said "Thank you" to the customer when they paid. And they usually repeated it back to me lol.

For the mystery shopper story, as someone who used to work in a similar environment to that best buy employee, they only care about sales, you can be even more technologically illiterate than the customer for all they care, as long as you make sales. The funny thing is that coming on as aggressively as they're trying to tell employees to do is just gonna piss most customers off, especially if you try to sell them "installation" for a plug and play device. Also if you go straight to recommending the most expensive items without actually taking what they're saying into account, people get really skeptical really fast.
Sadly the people coming up with these sales scripts haven't sold anything in 30 years and are probably so tech illiterate themselves they don't realize how ridiculous it is to offer installation for plug and play devices. It tells customers everything they need to know about a business and it's why brick and mortar greed machines are dying. Good riddance.
💯💯💯 Exactly! I am far more likely to return to a store if employees are honest and treat me like another person rather than a wallet like upper management often prefers. Part of the reason I love Apple stores is that every time I go, the staff will tell me if something is actually worth buying. I have had employees tell me better/cheaper alternatives from Amazon, Bose, etc (to the point where they will miss out on a $500+ purchase from me). So when they say, “this product from us is the best”, I actually trust them. It’s a way better strategy.
If they could legally get away with it, upper management would tell sales to just mug the customer and take their wallets, their cell phones, the fillings in their teeth, and if time and circumstances allowed, maybe a liver or a kidney, or both. Expecting the customer to come back again. Then go on to wonder why sales are declining, and in typical "No. The children must be wrong." fashion, blame the employees and increase demands of them that are increasingly impossible, and when they're unable to spin straw into gold or lay a dozen golden eggs, have mass layoffs and firings. Then when the company craters even farther, they golden parachute to safety while everything behind them goes up in flames, and they move onto the next company, and the cycle begins anew. Meanwhile new management takes over and it's "Now Jebrey, we noticed you only illegally harvested one of the customer's kidneys. Phil was able to get both kidneys, a liver and a lung. We're going to have to let you go."

It's not about actually providing for the company, but merely putting on the act as if you would walk through fires and blizzards for the sake of its prosperity and take all the undeserved credit. It's mostly not until the entire business bleeds money or loses enough reputation that these horrible middle-managers has any correctional actions taken against them, and it's sad that many such cases still requires legal actions when it's blatantly obvious who's at fault. I wish I was as naive as you. I've literally seen a manager once call an employee and say "Well what time is the funeral end? I expect you in 30 minutes later or you're fired." I was a customer and just dropped what I was going to buy. Emailed corporate when i got home (didn't have names), however I saw a few weeks later the manager was still there. I decreased my shopping at that store.
That last one makes me sick. I'm trans, and was fired one for "making too much of a fuss" over my deadname being written everywhere for everyone to see when I was trying to keep it private. They only fired me at the end of the probation period, and wouldn't reimburse the stuff I had to pay for with my own pocket to be able to work there (which they promised they would do) because it hadn't be more than 3 months since I started working. 😤🤬

While I don't personally understand the importance of deadnaming, since I'm not trans, I do understand that it clearly was important to you, and its a very sensitive subject that is intensely personal. Basic human decency and common courtesy cost your employer nothing, and still they refused it. That they knowingly used it against your wishes is just malicious and petty and stupid, and unnecessary. And it sounds like they were absolute dicks, since they lied to you about covering the costs you incurred just to be able to do the job, then invented or "discovered" an excuse to get out of any responsibility whatsoever. The second story irks me so much. I actually make sure to thank every person who has ever waited on me, whether in a restaurant, petrol pump, etc. I feel like every person must work in the service industry for 1 year to learn humility.
i have said for years that 6 months working for a large fast food place (Mc Ds, BK, KFC, you get the idea) should be enforced for kids in high school(think of it as a paid class). 1 it would teach them responsibility, 2 they earn an income and start to learn about tax and all that crap, 3 it would teach them to clean up after themselves, and lastly in this list, it would teach them how to treat retail workers, or any workers really.
@@gutz-Coldrevenge I think *a* customer service job is good enough. I have ASD and I couldn't do 6 months fast food- I did 3 weeks and it actually nearly broke me. That amount of stimulation doesn't work for some people, and a, ahem, certain fast food icecream chain wouldn't even hire me after I told them I have autism. On the other hand, I've been a Computer Operator and Front Desk Attendant for almost two years, and deal with the same sort of things from unkind people, and learned the same skills in an environment that's healthy for me.

A few years ago I took a 'bullying in the workshop' PD session at my old job. The woman who facilitated the session was an employment lawyer. On the first 'real' slide (after the intro, etc.) she noted she ethically had to tell us this information before giving the rest of the presentation, so that we could know what was likely to happen if we reported bullying to HR. The slide showed a pie chart of what happens to people who report bullying in the work place. I forget the exact numbers but it was something like 85% of the time the reporter loses their job (either being fired or constructive firing that results in quitting). A teeny, tiny percent of the time the bully loses their job. A slightly greater, but still teeny, tiny percent of the time the bully is punished in any other way. I ended up leaving that job. It was an abusive workplace. The only reasons that management had these types of sessions were to appease the union and to pretend that they were doing something about the rampant bullying there. Ultimately, the upper admin team were the biggest bullies of the lot and allowed the bullying to flourish because it helped to keep us worker bees believing that we were were garbage, 'lucky to have these jobs', and really had no where else to go (typical abusive relationship). I heard that after I quit a bunch of the best workers followed. Someone leaving that toxic place broke the spell and reminded everyone that we really could leave and find something better (and yes, I made sure to let key people know that I had, indeed, found something WAY better).

On your response to the 6th story, that was probably a scam. I work with 6 mystery shopper companies, and they don't recruit. Scammers, however, will pose as them, often sending fake checks for people to cash and "reimburse" in the process. They tried to get my MIL with that.
In regards to the first story, I feel for OP. I get triggered when I hear my wife is training new employees, because in two jobs I was let go from I trained the new hires who became my replacements.

As someone who regularly has to cover a register (the punks they hire never show up) I will say that I do more than mentally tell people to f off. Especially if customers bring up an item with no tag on it or if the customer doesn't agree with the price despite me scanning each item one at a time. Honestly RSlash your "one free pepper spray a year" idea sounds good, but honestly I think it needs to be tweaked. To maybe one a day. Lol
If I find an item I want to buy without a tag, provided I notice the tag missing, I look for a tagged one first to take that to get scanned. Naturally, the untagged one goes in the bag to avoid more problems
I always try to find things with tags, but every now and then I'm in a hurry and it doesn't have one or the barcode won't scan. I always apologise to the cashier for the delay and if they apologise to me, I tell them not to worry - I know they're busy and under a bunch of pressure, and it's not their fault about the tag. They're just trying to do their job.
As a cashier in a discount dollar store in a small town, I can confirm, it's like 25% actual nice people, 35% Karens, and 40% people who are just tired and cranky. With everyone who comes in I will greet them with a smile and ask how their day is. I'm lucky if half the people who come in reciprocate or even talk to me lol

My job at Publix cut my hours to one day of work A MONTH because they took in like 50 college kids in a single month, and they wouldnt even give me a consistent schedule for that single day just so I could make enough money to survive working 2 jobs. Come to find out that some yuppy rich kid that wasnt a college-returner who constantly broke the rules by clocking in when he was off, abandoned his job on his actual work days, sexually harassed the cashiers, and literally did nothing but steal free soda from the fountains and walk around was getting more hours than me despite the fact that I was busting my ass. The day I no-showed at that company was one of the best days of my life. Great corporation to work for as an associate, by the way, but the Greer, SC branch is run by incompetent morons aside from my boy DeVito.
To answer your question from the first story. Upper management falsely equate having a college degree to being more intelligent than the peons that actually run the show. I had the same problem where I used to work. Upper management falsely assumed kids out of college knew better than the people that had been doing the exact same job since said manager were in middle school at least lol. Usually they were completely incompetent, and thing ran much smoother when I worked on the weekend and none of them were around to harass us.

Yes the last one is retaliation, and this is illegal in a lot of places and would make a lawsuit. BUT there is no evidence, and it's unclear if other workers will come forward as witnesses in fear of retaliation, so it's hard to hold up in court when you essentially only have a he said-she said situation.
I don't know much about law, but couldn't they use the previous complaints made against the one coworker as evidence? Like, they have records that the husband made these complaints, and then shortly after he's fired for supposedly making a comment that mimics the ones that were reported. I feel like a judge would find that highly suspicious. Even if that's not admissible in court, couldn't he sue for wrongful termination? Afterall, the company has no tangible evidence that he made such a comment
@@PyroRoadScout Use complaint documentation as evidence: Yes, it is possible and it would hold up as admissible evidence, but it is not easy to force the cooperation to adhere these documents as evidence in court, because data protection and other laws come into play. Then, if we assume you were able to force them to produce these documents to the court, it still would be incredibly easy for them to tamper with the documents (these usually don't even need signature, it's a printed piece of paper) or say the lost them, or claimed they aren't kept in record that long. While that sure as hell wouldn't be less suspicious the missing of the documents doesn't hold up as evidence. So while you could use these documents as evidence its hard to get your hands on it. If he can sue for wrongful termination depends on his contract, but i think this was in America (not sure though, but the majority of stories are) and American workers rights are pretty horrible and if you're not specifically protected by your work contract companies can fire their employees for literally no reason, so to be covered by protection of wrongful termination he'd have to prove retaliation or discrimination and we are again at the same problem. But also I'm not a lawyer so I can of course not give definitive statements on American law. However this really doesn't sound like an easy to win case.
@@Scarlett.Granger Not really, nothing trumps a subpoena, and he also go straight to the labor board/department, who are rabid about this shit. The companies own written policy ,which they're not allowed to keep secret, would basically screw them if they tried to claim they lost it or they don't keep them for long, as for tampering, that easily proven by having THE ACTUAL PERSON WHO MADE THE COMPLAINT testify. No clause in any contract in America stating that you're not allowed to sue your employer has ever held up in court as it is an illegal clause and thus not enforceable. As for the right to work part, it's a common misconception that you can be fired for ANY reason, these companies are still bound by labor laws and wrongful termination and retaliation still applies, as does discrimination. MANY companies have tried what you've insinuated and all have lost, many add to the juggernaut that is case law.
I can kinda relate to that son on life support story, because while I was taking my Abitur (German A-Levels), both my grandparents died. And they didn't die peacefully in their sleep. One caught germs in the hospital and basically withered for three months and the other got cancer. When I went to my vice principal to ask him what I should do, he looked me dead in the eyes and told me I 'had to focus on what's important.' Still hope he chokes on his self-righteousness someday.
I was once told the same when my Mom was taken to ER for a mini stroke/heart attack. I was called by the hospital and when I called my boss to say I needed to leave, I got, "we really can't do that; she's in the best place. They'll take care of her." I was a in-home visiting nurse! "A good, Christian company that puts family first". It was my last straw with that company.
The manager in the 5th story kind of reminds me of my current manager. She has fired one of the cashiers for getting sick twice, once with 'the ronna' and another with food poisoning. In the fast food industry we're not supposed to come to work if we show any signs of food poisoning because it could potentially be passed onto the customers. It ecplisitly states it in the handbook multiple times over. And still expected the cashier to work after firing her twice. So the cashier quit and I hope files a complain with the district manager... again.

I worked in a shoe shop while I was in college and nearly got fired for recommending that a customer buy a cheaper, but, in my opinion, better pair of slippers than the expensive ones we were supposed to push. Sorry that I can't sign off on charging little old ladies fifty quid for a pair of slippers.

I used to mutter angrily about an old coworker of mine. He was pretty sexist and treated all of the girls like they weren't capable or work hard enough, and especially yell at me that I was going to slow even though we were all busy and we were swamped. This man came at me on my break to yell at me for something I didn't even do. I was so glad when he was forced to quit. Especially when I'm on my period, I can get really angry and be a total b-word, and most of the time I catch myself and apologize. But with this coworker I never regretted going into full B*tch mode.

I feel like the lady that complained about not being thanked for her business is the same type of person that believes that just because the business closed two minutes after they walked in they're entitled to help no matter what.
Second story is very relatable to me as a cashier. I gave a customer her receipt and was about to wish her a good day when she suddenly said "you're welcome" I confused said "excuse me?" She then saids "you're welcome. You should be thanking me for coming in. My money is paying your paycheck." I just started at her in disbelief. There wasn't a customer in line next and the store was loud enough to where only I could hear her
On that last story, that guy really needs to look into getting a lawyer and suing that place for retaliation and wrongful termination. They're literally sitting on top of a gold mine right now, and if they win, they will be reimbursed all court costs and lawyer fees, plus any settlements they are awarded, all on the company's dime. Many lawyers would drool over the prospect of getting this case.
If a cashier said "thanks for shopping", I'd consider not coming back. But then, that's why Walmart failed in Germany, the greeters were creepy as hell. I want to buy beer and ground beef, not have a social visit with a stranger.
my impression of the management in story 1 is that "veteran employees cost more, fresh hires are cheap and we can make more money of not having to pay" but... you have to pay for quality work.
I would love to get a follow up on the last post, because I'm almost completely certain the husband could sue. Not only could he get them on retaliation, he could get them on wrongful termination. Plus, he could help kickstart an investigation into the company for discrimination in the workplace
"Why dont they just hire from within??" If they hire from within they would have to increase the pay of the person in question. Why do that when they can hire a new person for less wage? Then that person goes "this sucks" and leaves because the pay isnt equal to their work. So they spend more money hiring more people for less pay again. And the cycle repeats. A lot of companies are just....stupid and inhumane.

When I was working at Comfort Inn in West Valley the owner (who was from India) I ended having a miscarriage, well I ended up going to the hospital I let the owner know that I won’t be making it bc I was passing my daughter his exact words: “I don’t care come to work now!” Before I left the hospital I had a job lined up to start the next day I did go to the job…to turn in my uniform and name tag, haven’t went back When friends/family come I make sure they skip that hotel
The 1st story reminds me about what happened with my aunt a few months ago, my aunt on my mom's father's side had worked at a gas station for nearly 25 years, 6 days a week, and all holidays included, just her and the owner/manager who spends most time in the office or at home, the owner is pushing mid 80's and decided to hand over his manager position, well I'll give you a hint, it wasn't my aunt, it was a 20 year old with no prior work experience, so my aunt quit, the end result, the manager hasn't retired and now that kids working my aunts old position. Now for the 1st time in her life she's without a job and struggling, but she says, "I'll be damned if I get played". Gotta respect it, though, given her loyalty to the job and the owner, and the fact that she knew everything about the store but was expected to work for an individual who didn't while "catching him up on how things work", with no compensation, of course.

I have a manager who has quite a belittling and smarter-than-thou attitude, tries to micro-manage everything that everyone's doing whenever he gets an opportunity to even talk to us, and has tattled to our boss on multiple occasions whenever _he's_ not satisfied with us not going above and beyond for the company, resulting in very angry e-mails being sent out. It has caused enough friction that some of us want nothing to do with him anymore, and I've honestly considered that if he ever criticize my work again I'll just turn to him and tell him to take over for me if he thinks he's so much more clever. I've been working for the company for 8 years, where I did a lot of unpaid administrative work outside of working hours during the first few years, and I told my boss as much during a phone call at one point. I've recently shown that I have no qualms to stand up for myself against the kind of verbal abuse that they've shown, even though I try not to push the case too often because I'm generally not a confrontational type of person. Even though my boss has said multiple times that if we don't like how things operates within the company we should consider whether this is the right place for us, I know for a fact that I can deliver results under the right conditions and that it, along with the knowledge and experience I provide, is something that isn't easily replaceable. And since the pay always puts me significantly on the plus each month, even though my qualifications reasonably gives me room to negotiate a much higher salary that my boss has supposedly denied any potential new recruits, I have no intention of quitting any time soon.
For the last story, angry coworker following you around the parking lot after work should be considered threatening especially with the rhetoric that he was saying, however corporate said he didn't actually do anything. So OP should get his carry permit and make the pistol visible in his vehicle if the racist tries to follow him again. After all, by corporates logic, just having a gun legally exposed in your own vehicle isn't actually doing anything.
I had a worker once complain to me about how much work she had to do, how nobody was helping her, and how all these idiot customers kept coming in and asking for food when she still had a ton of other food she hadn't made yet. We had this conversation while she was making the sandwich I had just ordered. I am very awkward so I kept saying "I can just order something else that's premade..." to which she'd reply "nooo no it's fine" ..then go right back to complaining about asshole customers wanting food.
First story: The reason companies hire people fresh out of college in management positions & not from within is because that way the company can easily condition a fresh mind to perform exactly to their expectations without question. People who work their way up are very likely to develop their own system in doing things & companies don't like that simply because it's not the way they want it to be, regardless of whether that manager is doing an amazing job or not. It's more a power move on the company's part.

Upper management won't promote from within because it costs more. They'd rather hire outside, pay them less, and keep the skilled employees in the lower positions. Can't be caught paying for experience, remember. Too costly for business.
Having worked at best buy for 8 years, and have been mystery shopped. The employee handled that interaction perfectly, that was until Jolee took over then the culture for employees to sell felt more and more predatory, granted best buy is in survival mode with the competition with online retail, but everything tracks, with the mystery shoppers story.

Answer to your question from the first story: Companies would rather outside hire because it's cheaper for them to bring in fresh meat that they can underpay than promote from inside and give someone the money they deserve for working a garbage job. That's how it was at AutoZone when I worked there.
Second story: How many times has OP thanked the cashier for serving her? I am willing to bet she is rude throughout the transaction and makes it clear she considers the cashier 'beneath' her.
The college employees thing tends to be more of larger things there. I believe there can be tax credit things and other agreements with colleges that tend to be a tossup from an employee side of thing. The colleges normally make agreements where it gets some of their students pretty guaranteed jobs (which looks good for them) while it's normally getting special concessions for the company...for example, the school might only go through them for a cell phone plan for provided phones or a other services
Story 6 - The Mystery Shopper -- OMG, I just figured it. All those Karens in shops trying to push an employee to the breaking point are mystery shoppers. They are just rude because it is their job.
For the last story, for the love of God he should've go to HR and say "but I never actually did something to any employee, did I? As long as I didn't touch anyone then I should be fine, right?"
Never ever agree if your boss says “I’ll take that as you quit” do exactly as the op did and say “I am not quitting” they can use you agreeing to deny benefits and make it out that you broke any contract not them
Re: First story ... if you promote from within, the employees are going to expect/demand a raise, but if you hire someone into management off the street, so to speak, you can pay them the bare minimum.
