i know this is an old comment, but i recently did a research paper on bp oil (formerly known as british petroleum) and part of their budget was literally devoted to legal fees from lawsuits regarding oil spills, cleanup fees, and workplace injuries. they literally budgeted in what they would have to pay to cover up the issue and settle any legal action rather than take the time to actually do proper maintenance or training, because it saved short term costs. basically, it was cheaper in the short term, because the legal cost would only show up if they got caught and someone pressed the issue. the same goes for these companies -- they probably know it's illegal, or at least incredibly scummy, but as long as nobody presses the issue they don't give a shit because it either creates profit or reduces cost in the present. that's why things like class action lawsuits are so important, and why companies are so concerned with things like union busting. a lot of people can't AFFORD to take these things to court, because a lot of us are way too poor to go against their multi-million dollar legal teams. anyway, el problema es capitalismo lmao

My motto is that if you have to lie or twist the words of your advertisement, your company doesn't deserve to be heard
@astraamarante6233
@astraamarante6233 2 года назад
False advertising is illegal, but companies make it so subtle now that even though we know it's okay it's more of an accepted fact, so no one tries to correct them. It's also that the world is run by capitalism and money and the companies are the ones with the money so that makes it even more difficult.

@@astraamarante6233 If capitalism runs the world, then explain the proliferation and predominance of socialism in political discussion, lawmaking, and governance. Also, general stupidity is not the same as subtlety in advertising. Modern marketing is blatantly false, it's the market that doesn't have the capacity to recognize it let alone call it out. As well, the regulatory boards are even more defunded than your local police precinct. I am sure that is what's called a contributing factor.
@astraamarante6233
@astraamarante6233 2 года назад
@@innocentbystander3317 Whether capitalism specifically runs the world or not, everyone is dependent on money and favor. No matter what type of government any country is under, they still rely on money to get them places. Also, I did not say that every company only uses small twisted subtle lies to market, you're putting words in my mouth. It was a generalization, as I'm not writing an essay for a school. The lack of resistance and the sheer amount that large companies make is what lets them keep advertising falsely. Even if there were a few hundred against a large company, corporations usually make millions and fuel portions the economy (at least in America), so the government wouldn't bother correcting them unless there was a majority percentage against it.

As a web developer most of this crap comes from the marketing department. One time I basically told my boss I wasn't going to implement one of these anti-patterns. Told me to do it or I was fired I said okay and left the building. Well I guess it wasn't that big of a sticking point because the next day my boss called and said I didn't need to do it and I wasn't fired so could I come in. Five minutes before that call I got a text from my coworker and the only other developer who saw the request and quit too. They were now a web company without a developer and even when they did find a replacement they couldn't figure out how things were setup because neither me or my coworker would take their calls. The company ended up folding a couple years later and never could keep a developer hired for very long.

I remember taking network engineering in college. The professor who was teaching us about physical network design standards and practices would tell us 'Here is how you properly set up a network so it is sufficiently fault tolerant and key systems can maintain uptime through redundancies even when something goes down for maintenance or error. Here is what your manager who knows nothing about network design or the actual consequences of a barebones system will claim is good enough for their needs. Here is how many red-bulls and prescription meds you are going to consume when the mail server inevitably crashes and your manager is screaming about how you clearly are incompetent at your job because this never should have happened.' He was literally teaching us 'Your manager will be an idiot, it's better to catch flak for making a working system than a timebomb'. The importance of a degree of assertiveness even with your superiors. I never actually pursued a career in the field...

On the whole taxes thing: In Spain, which BARELY counts as a "First World Country", the tributary agency sends you a draft about two months in advance stating what it thinks you owe. You can then contest that draft if anything has been mislabeled as the wrong type of charge or expense. If you don't contest that draft, you get charged what it states automatically through your bank. There's literally no legitimate reason to not have a system like this one in place. In most cases, such as in the USA's, what's going on is that the companies doing tax statements have teamed up in a lobby in order to push for politicians to keep the system as it is so they can keep leeching off of citizens who aren't literate enough on the topic. That shit is straight up disgusting. Edit: Fork the grammar police coming straight from the underground, etc.

I’ve always used the dislike counter to gauge if the videos had scams or viruses in the description when researching about getting something. Seeing a video with basically all dislikes is like a red flag that says “hay something is wrong here”. Especially if comments are turned off. I’ve always been paranoid about downloading anything so I always looked up videos of people who have downloaded the thing. It gives me reassurance that it is ok to download if there’s not any red flags like the dislikes or comments.

It makes me think of the story of the hurricane detector reviews. There's a company selling hurricane early warning detectors and it has a load of 5* reviews - "Easy to install" "good price" "arrived promptly" "aesthetically pleasing" etc. Then there is 1 review giving only 1* - "Did not detect hurricane". We don't only need to see the good, sometimes the negative is important....like seeing 2k dislikes on a first aid video and not just the 100 upvotes from people who don't know better!

I mean, yes, you're right when it comes to instructional videos or downloads, knowing the other people's opinions is great, but the dislike button was abused a lot by people who just wanted to spread hate. There where even programs used to automatically dislike all videos of smaller creators who belong to minorities. So, in this case, having a constant reminder of all the hatred, all the people who just hate people for who they are, that's not a good environment for creators and their fans. When a video is actually bad, or if you're probably not interested in it, RU-vid will just not recommend it to you, so there will not be that many honest dislikes. With comments, you can just delete racist, homophobic or transphobic comments, but with dislikes, you can't see which dislikes are given because someone doesn't like the video, or just because they want to spread hatred... Oh, and even with bad videos, a dislike or a like can't fully show what's wrong with a video. Most RU-vid videos are like 20 to 90 minutes long, so giving just a dislike doesn't say what exactly is wrong with the video. You could write a comment and explain where you agree and where you disagree, and if the other people are decent people, you can maybe even have a civil discussion about a topic in the comments. Do you think, I should just dislike this video, because I don't agree with what the Click said? I wouldn't! The part about him wanting to dislike videos is just a small part of the video, so a dislike or a like wouldn't show that I actually agreed with most of what he said. I said, that comments can have more nuance than just a dislike, but that's not always true. There are always a lot of hateful comments and RU-vid doesn't provide any features to filter out hatred from real comments. For example, I was watching a video, where a girl was talking about what swimsuits she likes, and one of the first comments was someone insulting her and saying that they think wearing bathing suits is worse than a terrorist attack, where dozens of people are killed. And reading comments like this... When all you want to do is watch RU-vid in peace... I don't know if you can relate to that, if you've ever been in a similar situation, but being in a situation like that is not very nice... So, what I wanted to say with this is, you can't say dislikes are a good thing or dislike are a bad thing. The same goes for comments, and for filters for comments. This has to be a nuanced discussion, where everyone should be included.
@LucarnAnderson
@LucarnAnderson 2 года назад
@@ThatLolaSnail people had the option to turn off dislikes/likes. plus it doesnt help protect creators. they can still see the dislikes. which one of youtubes 'strong' arguments was that seeing dislikes would hurt the creators feelings. yet taking away the dislikes just encourages people to leave more hateful comments if they do hate the video. and that is much more different than a dislike. I know, like you said they can delete comments but they still have to read them. it's more damaging reading a hateful comment compared to just seeing a number. and the one you gave was a good example of that.

the printer cartridge idea you had doesn't work sadly, they have "writable once" memory in the chip that essentially burns a bit every time you print a page. after the number of pages ran out the cartridge is "empty" (even though almost always it's stil half full of ink) and the printer refuses to take that chip anymore. there are however fake chips you can buy (that reset themselves to "full" when you take them out of a printer and put them back in) and put in your either empty original or 3rd party cartridges for a lot of brands.

I told him I'd consider it, but I'm at work rn and he should come back another time and his sassy response was: "fastest I got someone through the paperwork was 45 seconds. Do we wanna beat that record?". I said no, I don't have time and wanted to close the door on him already, but he somehow made me halt and then asked me: "do you not care about emergency service?". I slammed the hell out of that door! I was genuinely open to donating, but with that reproachful question, it was immediately off the table. They want something from me, they don't get to guilt-trip me for not saying yes and amen! I'm actually glad the guy did this though, because later on I learned that their emergency services (and all other social services that is carried out by church organizations in Germany) are financed to over 95% by the state/taxpayer money! But these greedy bastards still ask for donations, saying it was for their emergency services, when in reality it probably goes into religious missions in foreign continents where they play out the medieval ages with the poverty-stricken population there!

Second, Canon just released a tutorial on how to skip the "This cardridge is not genuine" message when getting a genuine one because the chip shortage forced Canon to sell them without the DRM chips. A little bonus to that is that they now exposed that the whole DRM thing is basically nonsense.

The thing is that if you coat paper with something to make it water repellent, you can't recycle the paper without an extraction of the coating first, be it wax or plastic. And since that coating is insoluble in water, you need somewhat aggressive chemicals to decompose it or organic solvents to dissolve it. Both options are not environmentally friendly. I think that "paper" bottle has a point: easy separation of the plastic and the paper, so you can dispose of each separately, which allows direct recycling without any extra steps and chemicals. It was misleading though to name it a "paper" bottle .. unless the plastic is made from paper, like cellulose acetate.
@augustaseptemberova5664
@augustaseptemberova5664 2 года назад
@@flamboyant_wolf Thin plastic is structurally weak (either too flexible or too brittle), vulnerable to puncture, and permeable, and vulnerable to high/low temperatures. By adding the thick paper you compensate for all of these weaknesses and add a lot of protection. If you use thick plastic, and leave out the paper entirely, you use a lot more plastic. Paper and its recycling are much more environmentally friendly. Plastic, even if it's a bioplastic, is much more difficult to recycle. If it ends up somewhere in nature, it won't decompose for decades (bioplastic) or centuries (regular plastic), unlike paper. So it's best to use as little plastic as possible.

That was probably HR's fault, I know that in some places it is standard practice for whoever is making the job advetisement/posting to add on that they are looking for people with X amount of experience in the job they are hiring for, even when the people who are requesting the new hires explicitly state that they want untrained labor (which isn't uncommon in writing based fields, especially government grant writing since you have to follow specific templates which would need you to untrain any writing habits from anyone who does have professional writing experience). This makes things even worse for the recruitment process as not only will people who have the specificed required experience not bother applying for the low wages, but it also causes people who know about this practice to ignore the job requirements that were posted as they know some of them are completely inconsequential. Furthermore a lot of good candidates that don't have experience don't bother applying since they lack the experience that is "required". The crazy thing about all of this is that the main reason that this is so common place is that a lot of companies don't want to pay for job training so the folks in HR think they are saving a buck by hiring "experienced" people, even when that just creates more problems down the line. TL,DR: Job hunting sucks because the people that make the job advertisements are often not the direct supervisors of the new hires and thus know nothing of what is required/desired in a new employee.

The tax code in the US is a bargaining tool. A company or industry lobbyist donates to a campaign and mysteriously next year their exemptions are through the roof. Or Congress says "look average household, we got you an extra $100 in your refund this year, don't you want to vote for us again?" Never mind the fact that closing corporate loopholes or just increasing the corporate tax rate would provide so much tax revenue that the average person could pay much less and the government would still be better off. It's also a way to directly influence individuals' behaviors. If you don't get health insurance, there is a fee added to your taxes. If you donate something, you get a tax deduction. Etc. If the tax code were simpler it would be more difficult to manipulate to get the outcome politicians want.

And my parents said you had to be smart to be a part of a company's advertisement sector. No, you just have to as annoying as the person in front of you who is walking slower than you, that friend who smudges your newly clean phone screen, and that eyelash that just won't get out of you eye.

15:30 This reminds me of a news article reporting on an election in South America where the candidate they didn't like won. So they made their bar smaller than the bar of the candidate they beat, but left the numbers there.

Let's be honest, they're not Communist, they're an Oligarchy. The government owns everything, and in turn is owned by a very small group. Actual Communism would be that you personally own your home, but all means of generating wealth are shared by everyone. In reality it's a system that simply can't work, because humanity as a species has no built-in filter to prevent abuse.

I remember that copyright issue with Mumbo Jumbo! What wound up happening was that the intro/outro song he used had a music sample that was not free to use. He had been unaware of it when he got the song from its creator. The company who owned that sample found out about it and copyright claimed all of his videos. Mumbo wound up having to edit the music out of all of his videos and change his usual intro/outro. He’s since then adapted into a new style and seems to be doing well now. I’ve forgotten about it entirely up until now

17:10 something like this actually just happened to me. 2-3 months ago I unsubscribed from National Geographic emails(still don't know how I was signed up in the first place) and it said it would take x amount of days for the changes to take effect. Annoying, but whatever. I had to unsubscribe again this morning because they literally never stopped sending me emails despite me choosing "unsubscribe from all notifications and emails" 🙃

There's already a plugin on browsers to undo the removal of the dislike bar. Because when Google hid it, they didn't get rid of it--it still exists on page data. Sooo plugins just recreate the part that Google yeeted.

13:36 your laughter implies you don't usually click for settings on cookies and vendor. If you did, you'd know this is quite standard. I quit TUMBLR because it had all this and no "Reject all" or even reject each one with one click. You're supposed to open each one and deny consent for 1000+ items.

So at my work (grocery store) they do this really shady thing with the sales. If it's 5 for $5 for example, you'll have to buy all 5 to get that price, or else it will be like $2.19 instead. However, they don't directly say that on the tag. There's an asterisks and reaaallyyyyy small text that clarifies. If I had a dollar for every time that a customer got confused by this, I would be making more money than I do at that job.
@Roxor128

[groans] I hate that! I've had to pass up on so many specials over they years because they require you to buy too many of that thing in order to get it. 5 for $5? Not a problem if it's something like mineral water that'll keep for years. Big problem if it's something that goes in the fridge and will go off in less than a week and you have basically no chance of eating it all before then.
