It's actually one of the hallmarks of serial killers. Maiming, harming, abusing, and killing animals is how a lot of them start. Best decision I ever made was to leave these toxic people behind. Hi RSlash, I worked in inpatient psych for a while and have worked with a few people across the age spectrum with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). From my knowledge, NPD and other cluster B personality disorders (like borderline) precipitate from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. You are much more likely to become a narcissist if you have a parent who has the disorder, and/or if you’re raised by said parent. It can also occur if you are around a lot of people outside your family (friends, teachers, coworkers) who are narcissistic because you learn those patterns of behavior. Angela in that story definitely sounds like she has narcissistic tendencies and so do the parents. This would be one hell of a case study for a psychiatrist if they ever met these people in real life.

im kinda sympathetic for the op on the first one because my father was a similar man that would get fooled by women. He had 5 children with different women, but not once he failed any of us as a father. He was a shitty partner (altough not exactly cheating involved ), and he got into affairs with married women (one of them costed his life at the end cause the husband got him killed). But oh well, he was not a perfect man but he surely was a good father and provider. So I kinda guess. Specially cause i don't like making women inocent victims of it all with no self reflection or force of will or intelligence that just fell into "predatory men", cause women also have agency and this person has proven to be a shitty mother, a shitty person, and a manipulator. I have never cheated on my life neither i think it's worth risking what i have, but i see where he's coming from. Also my parents were separated since i was 3 and were always good friends and coparented pretty well so.. i don't get the feeling ya'll have that "a family has to be together to be a family" THAT DOESN'T MEAN I JUSTIFY HIM. My father went through "a mid-life crisis" when I was in high school and was hooking up with several women from a South-East Asian country my mother (his legal wife) is also from. We didn't find out until I started university and it was hell. He blamed everyone for his infidelity - my mother, even me and my younger brother. He never accepted responsibility for his actions, he never apologized for destroying our once happy family. Almost all of the women he hooked up with thought he was "rich" (we really weren't), because he was white and kept buying them gifts. Several of these women also intentionally got themselves pregnant, each of them believing he would leave my mother for them (none of them realizing my father had multiple mistresses). He also outright refused to divorce my mother, because he didn't want to pay for it, trapping my mother from pursuing another relationship. The other woman said she got pregnant and lost the baby, and apparently they were very sad about it. All my dad does is tell my mom to “ignore her”, and that she’s a liar when he was literally messaging her when he got back together with my mom. He even went on a trip with the other woman when he had gotten back with my mom. My mom has had multiple breakdowns and feels completely unsafe at home. One breakdown almost made her flee the country. My brother is active duty in the military, and I’m away at grad school. We can’t visit home as much as we’d like. We absolutely hate him for what he has done. We were fine before he came back, and we were helping her manage dealing with an empty nest. There’s no trust. We have caught him in multiple lies. I can’t even look at him without getting mad. Whenever he speaks with me, it has to be short conversations or else I’ll feel like I’ll take my anger out at him. I know it’s unhealthy, but my mom is keeping him around to finish projects at home. Until then, we’ll have to put up with him. I have absolutely no respect for him. I want to believe him when he says he’s telling the truth, but I just can’t. He’s in his mid-50s, but acts like he’s still mentally developing. He says he’s “still being punished” for what he did, and it just pisses me off even more because he thinks everything will be ok if we just forget about it. It’s not that simple.

Maybe he deserves to still be punished for what he did. Cheating in a marriage destroys so much trust that it's hard to get it back for a long time. My brother-in-law cheated on my sister-in-law a few years ago, and to this day she still has trust issues. Like recently he had to go out of town for training and she packed up the kids and went with him for the couple of days it lasted. I personally don't think he'd ever cheat on her again but apparently she's still trying to build up that trust. I've never been cheated on so I can't imagine how horrible it would be to lose trust in a partner like that.

First story, quite frankly OP deserved everything and then some. What did they expect from cheating on his wife like that? I'm waiting to for another update and hearing he lost his son because they didn't want op in his life. Second story, good. OP's sister has no right to a child just as no child deserves to have a monster like that in their life. I mean, no one deserves to have OP's sister in their life really. Good on OP for going no contact with her family like that. Hopefully OP's sister's husband bails or winds up too toxic for her.

I ran away from home at fifteen because I was tired of daily beatings, lived on the streets for three years and then managed to make a career and life for myself. Guess whose siblings all moved away, far as they could and soon as they could, and guess who ended up looking after the parents in old age. Make your own family, OP, and live your own life. Be gracious to your parents and try to forgive them, but if you can't remember that YOU get to choose their nursing home.

I am one of the few who actually feel sorry for everyone involved in the first story (except the mistress). The ex-wife, daughters, and son for obvious reason. But even OP. He fucked up bad, and he knows it. He destroyed everything he had, and robbed his daughters of a father. I feel bad for him, because he now realises just how much of a blithering idiot he was, and now has to live with the guilt that comes from systematically dismantling his entire life, and hurting everyone else in the process. He's LUCKY his ex-wife is gracious enough, to allow him a small window into the life he left behind. He doesn't deserve it, but she still does it for him.

Hey R/! I have NPD so I figured I’d comment. Generally personality distorters are a combo of genetics and what they are raised in. For example I was raised by someone who never taught me how to apologize and be wrong. Because of this I developed a personality distorter that makes me extremely sensitive to being wrong and makes it extremely hard to apologize. However AFAB (assigned female at birth) NPD is different than AMAB. I am aware of when I am in the wrong and feel absolutely horrible about it. I’m just literally unable to say the words “I’m sorry”. This is only a small portion of NPD, the rest is pretty much always wanting to die and feeling like emotional garbage. OP’s sister does NOT have NPD. She likely as antisocial personality distorter. And needs help. Like yesterday.

2nd story: OP's sister isn't just a narcissist, she is a straight up sociopath. Impaling cats is something sociopaths do. She doesn't have empathy for anyone else, having a baby is just a way to keep the attention on her, because eventually the parents will have other things to do. I'm an only and, as much as my parents love me, they would spend less time with us if it wasn't for their granddaughter. (Like they moved to be closer to us specifically because of her.) OP is doing the right thing by cutting all contact. She shouldn't out her cousin though, the cousin is a mensch.

Who else is thinking that the reason for why OP got so angry that his ex wife moved on and got remarried to another man is because he thought he had another shot with her, and was upset when he realised that he no longer had a chance with her? Also, why do I get the feeling that he's trying to turn the script against his ex wife, especially in regards to their daughters? At the end, he literally says that he hopes his daughters 'grow up' and once they have more life experience, they can understand what happened. Narcissists are shit because they always blame others for their own mistakes. Although if you burst the narcissist's bubble, they can become dangerous. Besides, Angela seems to be not only jealous as hell, but also very unbalanced. And that treatment of the cat also brings the question of whether she is also either a sociopath or a psychopath.
